And yet again, you prove that you're one of my people. I've been meaning to start a TLC/Discovery thread for a while now but figured there was little interest. Y'all are hanging out in here! In addition, I'm obsessed with the 90 Day Fiancé franchise and Naked and Afraid, and a new season of Smothered will be starting soon.

I recently binged on Tiger King, and I'm afraid I've overbinged and exhausted my favorite podcast, Crime Junkies, which all of you should be listening to! SImilarly, I'm a huge Dateline fan to the point of annoyance when I see that several episodes will be airing back to back because I know I can't resist.

I have binge watched Netflix's On My Block and Outer Banks.

On My Block is the perfect mix of comedy and drama.  All three seasons were excellent and full of surprises.  The Season 3, Episode 8 (Chapter 28) cliffhanger has one of the most brilliant flash forwards I have seen in a series as it jumps two years in the future and leaves you shocked.  The entire ensemble cast is good, but the two standouts are Diego Tinoco (Cesar) and Jessica Marie Garcia (Jasmin).  Below is a fanmade tribute of all three seasons of the show that does not give too many spoilers away, but gives you a good preview of the show.

Outer Banks is the story of 4 friends who are trying to solve the disappearance of one of the four's dad.  The story has a lot of plot twists and turns.  If you like mystery and action/adventure stories, you will like Outer Banks.

I am watching a Portuguese miniseries titled A Herdade (the Homestead). It’s unbelievably good. Unfortunately it’s only available in Portuguese right now but HBO has bought off the rights and they’ll make a US version as soon as they can.

FX/Hulu were with another group but there were already so many in that forum, and FOX was by itself so that’s why we put them together.   Plus, they used to be connected.  We still might do some tinkering later on.

600-lb Life had a disappointing season, I think. Most of the participants weren't really committed and either ungrateful or outright rude. I think the best one was at the start of the season, with the 2 brothers, one was a hairdresser. They were basically nice guys who were trying. Now they're doing the "where are they now" episodes and those, overall, haven't been too great either. I originally liked Erica, though I questioned her looking up the long-lost boyfriend that early in the process...now he's gone and everything is "Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy." People thinking the scales are wrong. Lot of delusion out there.

Cameron is so sweet and mellow (and gorgeous) and seems absolutely head over heels for Lauren.

Jessica is just a disaster in a way that makes for great car-crash viewing.

Just finished Hollywood on Netflix. I was really surprised that I actually enjoyed something that Ryan Murphy has done. I wrote him off after he trashed Nip Tuck and couldn't get into Glee; however, his latest works, Hollywood and Pose have both been great. I guess he does stellar work when he has other people to prevent him from veering off to the wayside.

    • Kelly was a horribly-written character overall. Just think, two Emmy-winning actresses (including Cynthia Watros, Nina, GH, and Annie, GL) couldn't make it work. Pamela is campy, but so are Dani, Vanessa, Leslie, and Joey. And, I don't want to be too judgy because my love for camp changes depending on the show. OLTL, DAYS, and some eras of GH had me rolling with the camp. However, Passions was overkill and I hated it. And, here, I can take it or leave it. It's ok in small doses (note to RC). I see this show as more of a serious drama.
    • I think one of the reasons that pilot didn't get picked up was because Vicki L was associated more with being Thelma Harper and playing older then she was playing her own age.  It was a blessing it didn't get picked up, or we would have been deprived of the syndicated era of Mama's Family.   Also, worth noting a Pre Night Court Marsha Warfield and pre Perfect Strangers Rebecca Arthur in the cast.  All talented women, but stuck with a bad script. And the other pilot had a pre Fran Fine.. Fran Drescher as the best friend.  I think that pilot might have been picked up if Karen Valentine and Fran Drescher switched roles.
    • So, on rewatch....did Rick and Mindy never have sex?
    • Cady had a fairly posh accent or manner as Rosanna - the character was a 180 from Dixie when she went to ATWT, and it was a huge success initially. As someone mostly only familiar with the nagging, miserable or clueless Dixie of the mid-late '90s and early 2000s it was what convinced me Cady could act. I thought she was incredible in her first run. Later, in future stints, her hair and story and performances were all over the place but a lot of that was down to the show for me. She brought some of Rosanna back with her to Dixie in her ill-fated return and a lot of people didn't like it, which I understood but I did think the character needed some change. I think she's had a little bit of the same persona and arch performance in every role she's played since, including Jennifer Horton at DAYS or Kelly at Y&R, who later became a maniac and was easily the worst work I've ever seen Cady do. It has kind of infected her overall mannerisms, I'll allow that, but I do think she brought Dixie back together as herself while still evolving the character when she returned to AMC again in 2012-13. Nonetheless, for me the upshot is that this is a character where Cady's kookier recent performance style suits the role. But I can understand it grating for people.
    • Yeah, Loretta Swit's passing stings. My late dad LOVED the show (he died last November) and watched it religiously. In first run and repeats.  And I was literally born the day after the show's premiere, so I grew up with it! I know many loved later, softer Margaret, but I loved Early Hot Lips. In real life, I'm all for less misogyny, but to me, the early years of M*A*S*H were just funnier. May Loretta Swit rest in peace. Thanks for all the memories connected to my dad!

    • I agree that she isn't Dixie or Rosanna and shouldn't be acting like either. I just found it strange that she had a naive Southern character and a wealthy urbane character in the past and didn't experiment with accents before (unless I missed it, correct me if I'm wrong). She used to do improv characters on YouTube. She's probably doing something similar here.

    • And here I thought I'd never think about Lauren Tewes again after her brief appearance in Twin Peaks Season 3.
    • I may be the single person who does not mind Transatlantic Campy Pamela. I think it perfectly suits this sort of Absolutely Fabulous-esque supporting character she's playing much more than it did when Cady tried weird and often broad stuff at AMC* or Y&R, or later stints at ATWT. She's not Dixie and she's not trying to be. I will freely admit some of the other chances she took at other shows often came off stiff, hammy or downright mortifying (Kelly Andrews, come on down). (* - and I say that as one of the few who was somewhat into Cady trying to make Dixie more cosmopolitan in the Rosanna Cabot mold in mid-2000s AMC, just to liven the character up again)
    • There’s absolutely nothing exciting happening storyline wise but I’m always happy to see the vets on my screen so I’ll take what I can get. It’s also just nice to see them all dressed up in the same room, it always gives classic Y&R vibes. The best part? No Phyllis.
