I think the mystery element in the original Friday the 13th was supposed to keep you guessing, but not for the reason people watching the movie for the first time assume.
People assume that the killer is someone that the audience has seen (i.e. Ralph, Steve Christy, maybe the truck driver).. but my theory as to why we don't see the killer face is because the killer turns out to be a mother driven mad with grief over the death of her special needs child.
There was a rumor that part 2 was supposed to be a different story that revolved around Friday the 13th, but because the original movie was so popular.. they decided to continue the story and have Jason be the killer instead of the victim (like how Victor Miller had envisioned it). That was kind of the start of the bad blood between him and Cunningham.
I know his 1982 movie adaptation of a Mary Higgins Clark book (A Stranger is Watching) features Kate Mulgrew and in a smaller part Joanne Dorian (the brief Vicki from OLTL). And it's another team up of Miller/Cunningham.
