The impending implosion of CBS Daytime

We all know that GL is in extreme danger of being cancelled next year. We also know that ATWT is likely to be cancelled along with it. What we didn't know until today, however, is that--because of Bob Barker's retirement--TPIR may soon be cancelled along with the P&G soaps. Personally, I think that all three shows will be gone within one or two years. Once these three staples of daytime leave, all CBS will be left with is Y&R and B&B. But, don't forget the ripple effect TPIR's cancellation will have on both of these soaps: Y&R's ratings will decline significantly as a result of no longer having the best lead-in in daytime, which in turn will cause B&B's ratings to go to hell.

I fully believe that CBS Daytime will implode over the next couple of years in exactly the way described above. I also believe that, as a result of the implosion, the future of all of daytime is in extreme danger. Can you imagine what executives will think when no soap will be able to get a 3.0 rating? And, with two more soaps off the air, it will be all but inevitable for some others to soon follow.

What are your thoughts on (1) whether or not CBS Daytime will implode soon and (2) the effect CBS Daytime's implosion will have on all of daytime.

I don't think ATWT will be gone anytime soon.

If OLTL and AMC keep falling, GL might not be going anywhere for a little while either. I predict GL will pass AMC in the HH's very shortly.

Thanks for the gloom and doom Max. That's all I have to say about your post.

Every few months these posts come up. It's always the same damn thing.

While I think it is possible for Y&R to lose some because of losing TPIR, they won't lose enough to warrant worry. ATWT is going nowhere and GL may be out of the 8th spot soon with AMC and OLTL falling back.

Other then that, nothing much I can say other then I wish these doom and gloom posts would go away. It seems you post one Max like every few months or something.

Agreed. And usually by the same person.

As if LML, David Kreizman, Ellen Wheeler, and Jean Passanante weren't factors enough.

I agree thanks for the gloom and doom.

I don't think CBS would cancel ATWT esp. now that they are doing better in the ratings. I mean for several weeks now they have been at #3 or tied for #3.

I would say even GL could be saved at this point. Earlier this year, when ABC shows were still doing so good, I thought that GL might actually be cancelled next year as many believe. But I really think GL could rise.

The 2 soaps I am most worried about at this point are AMC and OLTL. They are in serious trouble. I am more worried about AMC - even more than I was when I quit watching earlier this year. And OLTL is the same way. If the current staff continue to dessimate the 2 shows, I don't see that there is anything for a new writer or producer to even save at this point.

Um have you not seen the ratings for As for the last couple of months? They have been doing terrific, and is rank #3 out of all soaps so I think As is going to stay put. They are in no danger of cancellation.

Exactly, its getting a bit irritating and old.

Just because Bob Barker is retiring, does not mean that all of CBS Daytime is going to be shot to hell. Please. Y&R and ATWT are doing pretty good.

There's always someone that wants to spread "sunshine."

I watched the news tonight and it said they would be finding a new host for The Price is Right. Just because Barker is retiring doesn't mean the show is ending.

I definitely see Guiding Light being the first of the current soaps cancelled. That's very evident. I don't think anyone can realistically argue that point.

People may say that Passions is worse than GL in win writing and while that may be true, CBS and NBC look for totally different things. PSNS works for NBC. The show brings in it's younger demos while DAYS brings in a variety.

CBS on the other hand aren't too worried about the younger demos and would cancel GL sooner than NBC would cancel PSNS.

I'm sorry to say it, but I give GL until next year unfortunately.

As for ATWT, I think we'll continue to see it after GL is cancelled. However, it will definitely be the second soap cancelled. P&G won't have GL or The Price is Right.

It's possible at this stage for GL to surpass AMC and/or OLTL- all it needs is some very creative storylines. That's happened before- firstly in 1998 when they managed to climb above both AMC and OLTL for most of that year, and in 2001 when they once got as high as 4th.

To the person who started this thread.

You're frick'n CRAZY.

CBS is working harding than NBC and ABC combined to juice up their soap operas

and it's really working. They also have the ratings to prove it.

There will be a slight drop off when PIR goes off the air.

But overall, it's ABC and NBC that will see cancellations first.

I predict Passions and OLTL would be the first shows to get cancelled, but then again,

ABC owns OLTL and it could be salvaged with a hot new HW. Trying to fire James Reilly

and salvage Passions would be like starting from virtual scratch.

GL might get cancelled if there's a sharp drop after Jon and Tammy leave.

ABC won't dare cancel AMC without a very long drawn out rescue attempt.

You're smoking trees if you honestly believe that. General Hospital, Days of our Lives and The Young and the Restless will be the last three soaps on the air when soap operas are finally phased out.

You honestly can't tell me you think DAYS or GH will get cancelled before GL and ATWT? That makes me laugh actually.
