The impending implosion of CBS Daytime

EK4life, I thought you said GL was kaput anyway? Was that just a rumour you heard, or was it true? Thanks ahead

Also Max,

TPIR is not going off the air. Bob has retired, but the show will go on. They have been looking for a replacement for a couple years, and the announcement should come before the end of the year.

The Price is Right will be going off the air. Once they replace Barker, the ratings are going to decline. I can see the show moving to the Game Show Network. I don't see it being on CBS much longer.

Of course it will eventually. But as long as CBS has a daytime lineup, TPIR will be part of it :) Although, I'm mixed on who should take over for him. I almost want it cancelled the day he leaves, because he seems irreplaceable. But will wait until I hear who takes over. Hopefully Rich Fields takes over, because he knows the show inside and out. It would be easier to swallow, than someone like Ricki Lake or Ryan Seacrest getting the job.

GSN could not afford TPIR. That's why they don't air the reruns. Freemantle wants to much dough.

The show WAS cancelled, but then the network changed their mind.

It's also getting stronger in the ratings, so we'll see how it turns out.

You're smoking trees if you honestly believe that. General Hospital, Days of our Lives and The Young and the Restless will be the last three soaps on the air when soap operas are finally phased out.

You honestly can't tell me you think DAYS or GH will get cancelled before GL and ATWT? That makes me laugh actually.

Drew if you will read the post, it says that it would be Passions or OLTL from ABC/NBC, and there was no mention of Days or GH.

They replaced Barker on the daytime version once before, and the show did well in the ratings. Many people wanted Barker back but he was only doing the primetime version of the show at the time, while Doug Davidson of Y&R was given the daytime version.

The show still did pretty good in the ratings with Davidson as host. I know that many fans did not like Davidson as much as they did Barker, but my Mom and I both felt he did a pretty good job. Davidson has a really good sense of humor, and had good rapport to me with the contestants.

I said no such thing.

You didn't read my post.

I SAID--

that GL and ATWT are in better shape right now....than PASSIONS and OLTL.

I seriously doubt that will change in the next two years. CBS is doing a major overhaul of its soaps as we speak.

I happen to know that NBC is considering a new soap by Brad Bell, to be NBC owned, and that they're on the verge of paying James Reilly's contract out and either revamping PASSIONS or cancelling it altogether.

GL is getting better and better numbers--and have a very high powered "Consultant".

And over at ABC, they might cancel OLTL and go the 2 soap route like NBC. It's a strong possibility

once GL takes over OLTL in the ratings.

I said nothing about the OTHER SHOWS.

Well, then, NBC' s foolish because it hit the gold mine with "Passions."

True, it's not at it sbest (it's getting better, you can tell), but the network could find NO new soap with better potential and marketability than this show which could appeal to all ages with the traditional soap themes, supernatural elements, quirky, fun characters, sweeping love stories and crossover Internet schemes to streamline revenues. They better just work with JER to retool. Although I would only say the show needs to speed things up, amp up. And heck, the network COULD promote the show better. I remember when all we got were 20 second promos. maybe they air them in primetime, but it's pretty crappy when weekly, all we get during the daypart is ONE 10-second, blink-and-you-missed it promo during "Days." That has NO effect whatsoever. I wonder if they get that.

Thanks for the gloom and doom Max. That's all I have to say about your post.
Every few months these posts come up. It's always the same damn thing.

Nothing to add.

Everyone always says that PGP wants to get out of soaps and will cancell ATWT/GL both, but I've never believed that. GL maybe, but ATWT gets the show lots of Emmy attention, general press and most importantly RATINGS.

Tell me, if PGP wanted to get out of soaps, why did they spend thousands of dollars on Daytime Dollars? Why do they have the PGP Soap Channel? Why are they going out of their way to promote the show with things like Inturn, Marvel, etc.? I just can't believe they want to get out of soaps based on what we see.

I do think that if GL is cancelled CBS would replace it. People say new soaps won't work, but I think thats a load of bull if they are put in a timeslot where people can watch it and it won't be aired at 3 am. Most of the new soaps added don't appeal to enough people. Sunset Beach is campy, Port Charles was supernatural and aired at 3 am, PSNS is an aquired taste.

If they really TRY at created a great, innovative soap opera that is traditional enough to pull in viewers, it could work. Just like ABC Primetime was shot straight to hell and now they are basically the #1 network.

But the simple fact is, relatively few soaps created since 1970 have been enduring successes- the two that have endured to this day are Y&R and B&B. Ryan's Hope and Capitol had their share of success before falling away, even Santa Barbara and Loving had their moments in the sun.

Santa Barbara was one soap which could, at its very best, get the right mix of camp and traditional soap- something Sunset Beach could also do when it was on form. Generations on the other hand can be considered ground-breaking in its own way.

B&B has fortunate to be on a network that has usually done a better job with its soaps, and in a timeslot between Y&R and ATWT. That no doubt helped it have decent ratings from the start and were able to grow from there.

They may get cancelled or not.

In the meantime I'll enjoy my shows.

I'll cross that bridge when I have to (hopefully 30 years from now.)

Meh. I don't see any soaps being cancelled any-time soon. I think unless changes are made in 2007, then by this time next year, we might be hearing some doom and gloom.

And NBC wants a soap created by Brad Bell? Oh GOD. He is SO hit and miss with B&B I dread it. Although if it means having a three-soap lineup ...

I love the idea of NBC wanting to retool Passions but I fear it could lose it's little magic. Interesting scoops.

I can't believe no one has picked up on Gabe's scoops? LOL.

I think many people would agree that cancelling Santa Barbara was a mistake and the show should've been given another shot. As for Capitol, the show was cancelled while it was still very successful only to make room for B&B. Ryan's Hope had strong ratings (and tons of Emmy support) until they gave Loving it's timeslot and moved it to 12 pm when most local stations air the news. Because of this the ratings severely dropped, but I don't think that's the fault of the show.

B&B is enough, lol. This is the problem about creating a new soap, someone like JER or Brad Bell gets to create it? That's insane. I still say if someone creates a good soap, it has a chance of being watched if it's promoted in the beginning. The City, Sunset Beach, Passions and Port Charles are all niche soaps. If someone follows the success of the few successful soaps and give us an original, well cast and fairly traditional soap, it could work. Until someone tries it I won't say it can't work.

Cancelling Passions is a very good idea though. With DAYS becoming a more traditional soap, PSNS is not compatible. Plus the show isn't very good and will never bring in enough viewers. If DAYS really becomes a powerhouse ratings wise, it would be stupid to squander the ratings on PSNS. But still, how could they ask Brad Bell? Have they seen B&B?

Where is Claire Labine when ya need her?

I disagree. The show has found some great actors such as Lindsay + Justin Hartley, Emily Harper, Heidi Mueller, etc. The thing it needs is a real identity. Is it a supernatural soap? If so go down the route of that show Point Pleasant, is it a drama about young people? Or is it traditional, multigenerational? They need to solidify their identity and retool the show. It needs some fresh blood behind the scenes or it will never go anywhere.

NBC needs to add another half hour soap to it's lineup that would have a higher budget and be along the lines of B&B. I think Sunset Beach would have flourished as a half hour soap. A Bell soap, half an hour, with Sarah Buxton in the cast. That's what I want.

But PSNS is considered a complete joke, plus with JER firmly in place, it will never improve. As a whole, it doesn't work and I seriously can't see it doing anything to gain any viewers. It's very firmly planted in last place. They have done major events like the tsunami and many others, but it doesn't do enough for the ratings.

If DAYS can get to a solid second place, or even third place, it would be a waste to be a lead in to PSNS. Even Sunset Beach and Another World didn't get as much a chance as Passions, IMO.
