The impending implosion of CBS Daytime

Featured Replies

I don't think CBS would cancel any of its soaps, and here's why.

Cancelling ATWT and/or GL would be very powerfully symbolic- it would definitely have a domino effect on the entire genre to the point of near-extinction for our beloved soaps.

CBS would also be mindful of the negative reaction to the disraceful way NBC's cancellations of Another World and Sunset Beach were handled and the damage it has done to the network's standing.

Wow there really never is a lack of drama here....

I think regarding the insider's "scoops" we should all remember that it is just speculation right now. Things change quickly in the soap world. Forget about the inside scoops we get, but look at the amount of stuff that comes out in the magazine and changes, the amount of people who are for sure fired and then kept on and vice versa.

And regarding TPIR and Y&R, in the tri-state area TPIR is on at 11am and then the news and then Y&R at 12:30. I know some areas TPIR is the lead in but if we were to do major markets and compare then perhaps the difference will show that ANY change in TPIR is not going to affect Y&R at all. Besides doesn't TPIR have more viewers in HH than Y&R? It's not like everyone watching TPIR is sticking around for Y&R.

Max started all this mess.:P Funny how he hasnt been back to post on this topic. He just stirs the pot.

  • Member

Yep. Max stirs all of this up and then disappears.

Stop the fighting, guys. Until an official announcement is made, NO SOAP has been canceled or is canceled.

Gabe ... I love your scoops.

I just don't see the point of NBC canceling Passions, which has aired for 7 years, and does well in the demos, for a new soap that *might* do better. But this IS NBC and they clearly have the history of canceling soaps at the drop of a hat ... lol, so anything appears to be possible.

  • Member

Y&R has lost so much viewers and TPIR has been on. I think the ones who want to watch Y&R are invested or atleast interested in the program.

  • Member

Max is nothing more than a troll. Once in a while, he pops up, bashes NBC and always spreads some doomsday crap about daytime.

Daytime won't die unless its fans ignore it. Based on these posts and what we hear and see on other boards and in soap mags, The Grim Reaper ain't coming just yet. Fans are more passionate than ever.

ALL soaps are struggling right now, including Y&R. It may be #1 but for the first time in a long time, many fans who know what's going on behind the scenes aren't happy with LML's rapid changes. I'd say that even with that drama going on, CBS and NBC are the most stable, even though Passions needs TONS of work and DAYS is still transitioning and has quite a few kinks that have to be worked out. It's ABCD that needs to watch their backs.

How about cancel GL and replace it with classic reruns?

I'd tune in.

  • Member

LOL, why am I always the one that is told to stop fighting?

Before I said anything about EK4L's scoops, EK4L asked who the F U C K cared about what I believed?

Did everyone just overread that post?

I'll admit when I start [!@#$%^&*] in a heartbeat, but I did not start that little spat. Sorry.

Wishing cancellation on any soap is danger to all soaps in general.

And Drew if you want to talk about cancelling soaps that do not hold their own anymore then IMO AMC, OLTL, GH, Days, Passions, B&B, ATWT and GL all need to be cancelled.

We want these 9 shows to stay on the air forever for sentimental reasons. And it's a luxury that has allowed these 9 shows to become sloppy, arrogant, and stagnant. It's only when there is the potential for them to be cancelled that they even try to entertain anymore! And as soon as they get a contract they go back to the same old crap.

So yeah, I'm dead serious. If they can't keep themselves afloat creativly, and with viewers, then they should be cancelled. Just like any show in primetime would.

Drew I know your serious, and that is fine. But the analogy you are using is what I was respoinding too. You said there were 2 soaps on the CBS lineup that couldn't hold their own anymore. With that analogy and what you have further said in this post, then at least 7 of the 9 soaps on the air should be cancelled and replaced with something else. Ratings wise and not creatively the only ones that would be safe are Y&R and B&B - the rest as far as holding their own with ratings would have to go. If you throw in the creative wise, you would have to throw out B&B too. With ratings averaging 2.5 to 2.4 usually for the 3-7 soaps now (occassionally getting up to 2.6 and rarely a 2.7 these days) not any of them are very far from GL's usual 2.2 or 2.3. None of them have anything at this point to brag about.

My only point is that there are more than 2 shows that should be targeted by your or anyone else for cacellation.

Anyone who says they're positive that ATWT and GL will be cancelled in a year has been not paying any attention to these shows, to the ratings, and other soaps in general.

I've said this over and over again and being that this is a more popular thread, hopefully more people will read this: I'm not really sure who is behind all the promotion GL has been getting lately (Kreizman? Marvel? PGP?) with the Marvel comics and what-not but it's obvious, they are trying to do something to get the ratings up for this show. It'd be another story if nothing was being done at all. GL has also maintained a consistent number of viewers and doesn't fluctuate quite as violently as all the other soaps. It has also SURPASSED the 2 soaps no one has really been quite negative about (AMC & OLTL) 2 to 3 times within one month's time. Moreso, you just have to look at last week's ratings to realize that GL is very close to tying and surpassing 3 other soaps. Until now, no one has been saying that AMC and OLTL are in the realms of being cancelled but if I were TPTB over at ABC, I'd be freaking out!

That said...GL might experience a drop when Stephanie Gatschet & Tom Pelphrey leave but we'll see.

While I think ATWT sucks right now, the ratings say otherwise so I'd be an ignorant fool if I said it was going to be canned anytime soon.

"ATWT and GL are a shell of their former selves"...for Pete's sakes, isn't this the case with EVERY soap??? Just because you preferred the show a decade or a mere 5 years ago doesn't mean that there aren't people enjoying it now! Y&R's ratings definitely aren't what they used to be but people don't hand them a death sentence because they've almost always been #1. <_<

I won't say much about Passions but the show's a lot more popular than the ratings reveal so I doubt it'll go anywhere anytime soon. IMO, it should have been canned years ago.

On an end note..for the love of God, could people do a little research and have some objectivity before making ridiculously idiotic statements???

I know the ABCD lineup is slipping, and that B&B has, oddly, solid ratings. I'm not necessarily talking about ratings points, I'm talking in general with viewers. I don't see many of of those 3.0 B&B viewers that are happy at all with their show. And I know if AMC got its act together, its ratings would go back up because their audience is still fresh from leaving.

PASSIONS has been on the air for count 'em----7 going on 8 years.

They've never once produced a decent total viewers rating.

The show has always been DEAD LAST in the ratings.

The show is also the laughing stock of the whole industry. The most critically de-claimed soap in history.

The central problem is most likely James Reilly. He's over sixty years old and he's got a "Dr. NO" fixation that won't quit.

NBC is tired of waiting on a "cult show" to take off in the ratings. It would be different if this show had the success of Dark Shadows or other cult hits. But it doesn't.

The more DAYS rises, the more NBC is ready to replace PASSIONS with something more compatible with DAYS.

Brad Bell has the #2 soap on the air and knows how to hire good talented soap oriented people. He could create a very good 1 hour soap for NBC and Executive Produce it with someone else HW. It would probably get better ratings than PASSIONS right away.

Sorry, Erica, that's wrong. "Passions" has beaten Port Charles in the ratings so it has not "always" been dead last.

The show is only the "laughing stock" of the daytime industry. The show has been named "best soap" by TV Guide for two years in a row, named best soap by Entertainment Weekly for one year and critically LAUDED by other "mainstream" magazines. Heck, USA Today called it as good as "The West Wing" when that show was at its highest point. Frankly, you're WRONG when you say the show is critically de-claimed--because it's not true.

As for not achieving good ratings, the fact that it surpassed "Sunset Beach's" series high and continually hit the 2's at this JER-produced show's heyday, shows that you're wrong. Entertainment Weekly even wrote a special article titled "NBC Soaps Float" back in 2000, referring to Passions' highest (and impressive for its 'new' status) ratings--a 2.9 with Sheridan's buried alive storyline.

So, once again, regarding "Passions," you're just wrong. And I'm sorry if that's harsh, but I'm the show's No. 1 defender; you mess with it, I mess with you. (if it's an erroneous statement, such as the ones in your post, which I've proven wrong).

Passions has not always been dead last. It ranked above PC until it got cancelled. In its first few years, Passions was a hit. It had even hit a 2.9 during the holidays. They were even having ratings success in 2004 when they nearly passed GL. The last year has killed it and I think JER could still save it if he finally admits to change his style and pick up the pace. I am not opposed to hiring someone else to retool as there are some good actors and the show itself has potential. It is not meant to be taken seriously and never has been but perhaps that is the problem. Maybe it's time that they strive to be taken seriously. Brad Bell is the last person I would want to launch a new soap. He can barely handle the one he has and B&B only manages to stay where it is in ratings because it has Y&R as a lead in. I think it is more likely NBC retools Passions or makes even more cuts. It does do well in some of the demos still. Whatever the case I can't see them starting a new soap. They only gave Passions a chance because of JER because, at the time, they clearly were trying to get out of the soap business by cancelling two of their shows. They almost lost Days around that time too so I think if Passions had not come along they may have completely removed themselves from soaps.

Passions needs to end the stories it has and create some new ones. They need to go back to what made the show work from 1999-2001, which was a mix of traditional/supernatural. That was it's identity and every so often the show goes on a mini-run of sorts and is good but then goes to crap again. The potential is there to be utilized.

As for ATWT, it's safe and if GL managed to pass an ABC soap or two then they are safe for now. I am actually more focused on AMC and OLTL getting cancelled as they keep getting worse.

PREACH, Phoenix! Preach!! We won't let such erroneous statements (designed just to bash "Passions") lying down. Not-gonna-happen!!

With the firings that are taking place on AMC, AMC is in worse shape than any of the shows right now IMO. Fans are outraged over the Josh Madden story, the firings, and so much more. And now there is even word that more firings are coming by the end of the year.

I for one don't think there is going to be anything left for anyone to get together.

Steve I totally agree. I left watching AMC for Y&R because of the way the show is written and acted. It appears to be a more well balanced cast and they use most of the characters on a regular basis. It's a shame that AMC has been destroyed over the last 2 years! I was just shocked to hear about the latest round of actors leaving the show. They've been treated horribly!
