The impending implosion of CBS Daytime

I don't wish it ill will because it's not my cup of tea. I wish it ill will because I think it's terrible and has no chancer for growth. With DAYS making serious chances with Hogan, it would make sense to give the show a more compatible lead-out which has more potential for ratings.

So what I'm getting from everyone here is that Passions and its fans are a dingleberry on the ass of daytime television

You may not like Passions but there are A LOT of people that do. Don't wish it ill will because it's not your cup of tea.

I've watched PASSIONS and I don't think it was any sillier than "Days of Our Lives" used to be.

My entire argument in this thread had to do with which shows are most likely to be cancelled first.

PASSIONS is the lowest rated soap on daytime. I wouldn't care if it was masterpiece theatre, the show is not pleasing NBC or their expectations. They gave it a lot of time to catch on because of the fact that they OWN IT. No other reason.

There is talk that NBC wants a show that's more compatible with DAYS and that Lindsay Hartley (Theresa on PASSIONS) would be the star of that show and it would be produced by Brad Bell from his dad's original idea for "What's Done In the Dark".

This is just "talk" going around. I have no idea if it will happen or not, but everyone says Brad is leaving B&B to work on this for NBC. Since Burton Armus still hasn't shown up at "AMC", who the hell knows?

Someone started this thread claiming that "Guiding Light" and "As the World Turns" will be the first soaps cancelled in the next few years, and I said that "PASSIONS" and "One Life to Live" were more likely to be cancelled at this point.

In all honesty I think "PASSIONS" is really the only soap that faces serious cancellation right now, and that's because as "DAYS" goes up in the ratings, NBC would expect "PASSIONS" to also gain.

That hasn't been happening, however. In the last 3 months, "DAYS" went to #3 at least six times and "PASSIONS" still failed to budge from #9. So if Hogan Sheffer's stories kick in over the next few months and "DAYS" continues to build a bigger audience and gets a bunch of EMMY nods next spring, and "PASSIONS" just stays at #9 with no critical points, you can bet your sweet ass that NBC is going to cancel it and put on something to compete with "General Hospital" and "Guiding Light". That time slot has to have a soap opera.

I've seen this A LOT of places, where some people come out of the woodwork and call "Passions" the 'anti-soap' and dispute that it's a soap or say it's hurting the genre...blah blah blah. We're tired of it. We enjoy it, leave us alone. That's all I'm saying.

I do think that PASSIONS is the AntiChrist of the genre. I won't take that back, either.

Also, yes, the lush location shooting went away, but for the first two years of the show, you FREQUENTLY had establishing shots of the Crane mansion, the bennett house, the Lopez Fitzgerald house, etc. Sadly, they're gone. But it was another hting that set it apart from most soaps...not to mention all those kitchen scenes and scenes that played out, as soap magazines pointed out, where current soaps had long abandoned story settings.
B&B has ALWAYS used "established" shots and skyline sets for most of their entire run! I don't think PASSIONS has done anything new and innovative to the genre. I just think it had taken old stereotypes and rehashed them, in very bad taste.

So what I'm getting from everyone here is that Passions and its fans are a dingleberry on the ass of daytime television.

Hmmm, Karrie, you summed up my thoughts so eloquently! :)

PASSIONS is the lowest rated soap on daytime. I wouldn't care if it was masterpiece theatre, the show is not pleasing NBC or their expectations. They gave it a lot of time to catch on because of the fact that they OWN IT. No other reason.
Exactly. None of us would really be having this discussion if PASSIONS wasn't the lowest-rated soap in daytime. I just think the fact that it IS the lowest rated soap in daytime, has more station clearance than the next up on the food chain GL(a show with a low budget and a really early timeslot)....there has to be a reason why. And for most soap fans and television viewers who watch PASSIONS, that reason is in black and white, for reasons that have already been stated in previous posts.

There is talk that NBC wants a show that's more compatible with DAYS and that Lindsay Hartley (Theresa on PASSIONS) would be the star of that show and it would be produced by Brad Bell from his dad's original idea for "What's Done In the Dark".

NBC will score LOTS of extra points with me if they decide to go full-steam ahead with this project. Hartley is, undoubtledly, the star of PASSIONS, she's beautiful, and she's talented(who else can make Theresa such a controversial ingenue that would get her mixed reactions from all across the board?!). Add a couple other talented up and comers with some vets, and they would have a viewer from me for at least a few months, hopefully more.

We need something NEW in daytime!

This is just "talk" going around. I have no idea if it will happen or not, but everyone says Brad is leaving B&B to work on this for NBC. Since Burton Armus still hasn't shown up at "AMC", who the hell knows?
I know it's just talk. But it keeps hope alive!

I wouldn't expect PASSIONS to go, but since there IS a new chief over there, it wouldn't surprise me.

I just think it's criminal that PASSIONS has stayed on the air for so long.

I LOVE the idea of Lindsey Hartley being the star of a new soap. She has carried Passions for years and with good writing she can be abolutely phenomenal. I mean she is fantastic enough now with the crap Passions gives her.

I watch Passions but even I can recognize it is not the same show that garnered those reviews from 1999-2001. The last two years for the most part have been utter crap. It even lost some of the craziness that made it what it was at times. The last time Passions made a true, long term effort to improve things was from March 2004-July 2005 when the show went traditional and actually got some respect during that time for losing the supernatural angle. The only problem is losing the supernatrual and craziness made Passions lose itself and then they tried to be controversial and had like 3 females get raped in like a 6 month span. The show has not recovered from that. It's was actually improving in the ratings in 200 and early 2005. I remember the holidays with the the Shuis wedding, Theresa/Gwen, and Rebecca trying to kill Eve did very well in ratings. The show has just been pure crap for the most part since July 2005. It rebounded a bit in the summer and is better of late but it needs more then these little runs of consistency.

The points being brought up here are valid points. The stories have dragged too long and no one cares now even with so many secrets coming out. The show also doesn't recognize that some of its actors are horrible and need to replaced. They give stories to the actors that don't deserve them and let the ones with talent be held up in stories that go on and on for years or don't even give them a story at all. I was very close to dumping it but the recent reveals have kept me for a bit.

Passions should be a good soap opera. It had all the makings of one with 4 core families living in New England. You had the rich Cranes and then the townpeople. The supernatural mix with tradition was excellent and the show actually tried to take itself seriously back then but now it's about nothing but surprising the audience and not enough about substance and storytelling. The show and JER does not listen to fans and have not been willing to make the changes necessary as of yet to make the show better. I fear it may be too late to be honest. I hope it's not and that the show is on to something right now but I doubt it. Been burned too many times. If a new soap is brought in, bring the good actors from Passions over and go from there. I would hate to see Passions go because I have watched since day one despite the times it burned me but it has had so many chances and not enough is happening.

I agree they will look really bad when Days does increase and they don't. Now if Passions goes up with it, even a little bit, it may buy some time but they need results creatively and number-wise ASAP. I hope they can save it but I have alot of doubts.

I have always loved the launching of a new soap ever since I started watching soaps when I was in 5th grade. I have seen the launches of: Loving, Santa Barbara, Rituals, The Bold and the Beautiful, Generations, The City, Sunset Beach, Port Charles and Passions. I have watched them all. In my opinion nothing will ever compare to Santa Barbara, but I have enjoyed each of them for different reasons. It's really sad the only soaps to survive from the group are The Bold and the Beautiful and Passions. If Passions is cancelled and replaced by a new soap, I would definitely watch the new soap.

I have always said that Passions has such potential and I've read some really good post here at SON regarding the show. Passions should take itself a bit more seriously and improve the writing and acting on the show. I will remain loyal to Passions, but I do think things could be better. A major overhaul would definitely benefit the show. Maybe JER should be replaced or remain in a consulting capacity. But like I've said many times before we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

As for CBS, I truly believe GL will be cancelled and B&B will be extended to an hour. I predict TPIR being reduced to 30 minutes. Already, the show is broken up in the Nielsen ratings as TPIR 1 and TPIR 2. With Bob Barker retiring it won't be the same but I don't see CBS cancelling the show just yet.

And still Passions comes up even if Max doesn't talk about it...

Doubt that TPIR will be reduced to 30 minutes unless it is revived in syndication many years after its initial CBS run...Gameshows, no matter how large the prize is, are ALWAYS cheaper to produce than scripted television. That's the way it always has been. Also, I don't see CBS adding a new soap to its lineup after the cancellation of GL, UNLESS that show is a Bell or CBS-owned property, at which point, it will definitely replace AS THE WORLD TURNS's timeslot. If ATWT isn't cancelled at the same time GL is(and CBS hasn't acquired ownership of it), ATWT will inherit GL's old timeslot if a new soap is added or if B&B is expanded to an hour. BET ON IT.

I don't think Passons will ever improve with JER there so I would love to see Passions gone and replaced with another soap. Passions had potential and JER has been given over 7 years to make something of Passions but it's never going to get out of last place in the ratings with him there so it's time to move on to something else. I would also love to see Lindsay Hartley in another soap so I hope that's true and that it happens. :D

NOT TO MENTION GL GOT AN EMMY NOMINATION FOR BEST SHOW! How 'bout that: being recognized by the academy!

James E Reilly was nominated for outstanding writing for 2001, 2002 and 2003. What's your point?

Good point. I forgot that and 2002 and 2003 wasn't even the years considered to be the glory years. Not that the emmys mean much anymore but if all the early mangazine praises between 1999-2001 didn't mean anything that should.

my point is it doesn't mean a thing. Being nominated for a daytime emmy, winning one, it means [!@#$%^&*]-all. They recognize crap like GL and crap like JER.

But, if we're going to get into a Guiding Light vs. Passions debate ... why has Passions received more creative recognition from the emmys and why is a 50+ year old traditional soap trying to copy the lunacy of a campy show like Passions that doesn't take itself seriously, and presenting it into a format that makes it look even more foolish because it does take itself seriously?!

Honey, I would take "She's a Marvel" and every other "Inside the Light"/Character Study(no matter how bad they were) over Hell In A Closet, The Battle Between Good vs. Evil, PASSIONS: Vendetta, Sheridan Kidnapped By Clowns, and every other craptastic plot PASSIONS has featured over it's time on the air.

Almost as craptastic as when Guiding Light was cloning Revas, chillin with angels and walking through paintings?

GL doesn't try to copy PASSIONS's lunacy. I think most of GL's inspiration comes from movies, especially their "Inside The Light" concept. 'She's a Marvel' was the only thing that was ever "Out of the Ordinary" for Wheeler/Kreizman GL.

And even on GL's most crazy, shallow days, their characters have more depth and shadings than any PASSIONS character.

Almost as craptastic as when Guiding Light was cloning Revas, chillin with angels and walking through paintings?
That was the Rauch era, not the Wheeler/Kreizman era. I judge GL and PASSIONS together based on the current regime(PASSIONS hasn't changed its entire run).

Wheeler/Kreizman have done plots that make one suspend disbelief, but they usually keep the show pretty grounded. The plot's uneven, but at least I can watch an episode of GL and, somehow, see a beautifully acted, well-executed production. I see heart and soul in a GL production. Can't say the same for PASSIONS, although I do watch it when I need to be reminded of how low soaps have gone.

James E Reilly was nominated for outstanding writing for 2001, 2002 and 2003. What's your point?

OK, so you proved your point. I was only thinking in terms of last year's nominees.

There's no comparison between PSNS and GL. Seriously, none.

Actually, there is one. They are both the two lowest-rated soaps in Daytime. Although, GL is moving on up with their ratings these days. GO GL! [i don't watch the show, LOL.]

I seriously cannot believe he was nominated for Outstanding Writing in a Drama. This is JER! :P:rolleyes: Even though some maybe call 2001 the glory years...

Can we please chill with the "Let's Bash Everything that is Passions Because It's Not Like Y&R or DAYS or GL or Any Other Soap Opera That's On"? For once Max doesn't [!@#$%^&*] about how the show's existence is the reason why the sun doesn't shine, and still it just turns into one. If it's not your cup of tea, fine. There's no need to bash it all the damn time or to wish it be cancelled.
