Y&R: Old Articles
I know Bill bell respected Wes Kenney but this article and others at the time seem to credit Kenney with storyline decisions. I would imagine Bill might listen to Wes, but surely Kenney couldn't just say 'Kill off Cash' and Bill would acquiesce? It would be interesting to know how that relationship worked.

All : Storyline risks that didn't pay off.
Days took a big risk in 1980 by killing off/ writing off a bunch of characters Bill,Laura, Linda, Robert, etc and focusing on a new set Kellam, Liz,Joshua etc The show was moribund and needed to make some changes but all of this turned viewers off and ratings tanked. Within a year or so most of the newbies were gone.

ALL: Storylines that took the biggest risks and got the biggest rewards?
Days The Salem Strangler This was really the first story of it's kind in daytime. Only Edge of Night came close, but they never did a serial killer story. They used it to kill off a major character (Mary Anderson) and hyped up the 'death' of Marlena as well as introducing a new 'supercouple' in Roman and Marlena and making the killer a major character (Jake).

All : Storyline risks that didn't pay off.
The flipside to Amy's thread. What were some chances soaps took that didn't work? Now we know there were many so let's try and keep it to those that did go out on a limb a little bit rather than just stories that you didn't like. To start Y&R Paul and Nikki as parents of Dylan. To accomodate Steve Burton, TPTB decided to tie him to beloved core characters and return to a past storyline. But viewers didn't buy it as they twisted history and Dylan was a pretty dull character. He's hardly been mentioned since he left. AW Steve/Rachel/Alice. AW resurrected it's signature 60's/79's story but the revived triangle had 2 recasts ,neither of whom captured the essence of the original with Rachel a different character to what she had been originally. The end result was killing off Steve again, and dropping Alice. Days David/Val. The groundbreaking interracial romance ended with Val being written out. She was never contract anyway. Overall, they decided not to continue as ratings and response wasn't there. Looking forward to your responses...

Same Actor, Different Names
Richard K Weber (Tom Love of Life) began his career as Rick Ely. Seems Weber was his real name but as there was another actor with that name he had to change it. For anyone interested there is a facebook page devoted to him. https://www.facebook.com/RickEly1970

The reformed trope
Yes, seeing Phyllis rant about Sally might have worked had her hypocrisy been called out, but Nick supported her schemes.Had he been resistant, their subsequent problems would have been more realistic.

That's a shame. Considering he was the longest serving cast member, Doug/Paul has been treated badly. He agreed to recurring status, so someone/something must have caused this as Lauren, Micheal,Chloe,Kevin,Gloria,Traci,Nina,Ashley etc get airtime Although it seems the same thing has happened to Kate Linder only she's not talking, maybe in the hope they'll bring her back. There is enough going on that Paul could appear to discuss police matters if nothing else. When Lauralee appears, Paul and Christine could have some convos. They could do a mini story about Paul feeling depressed with Chris out of town. Lauren decides to cheer him up, They get reminiscing, drink a little too much and kiss. Both laugh it off but there's underlying feelings etc.

Was it a risk to move Sheila and the Lauren to B&B? Whatever - it definitely paid off.

Yes I get the feeling Eric feels Victor should still be the lead male on the show and be written as the same character as 20 years ago. He seems pretty much to rely on cue cards now and spends most of his time seated. I wish he had have (at least) semi retired on his 40th anni and bowed out gracefully, just making guest appearances - or even allowing Victor to be killed off!

AMC - creating a front burner young love story b/w 2 totally new characters Cliff and Nina. Until then AMC had pretty much relied on the Tyler and Martin families to create story. Although it was short term gain as the writers got a few good years from the pairing then there was nothing left .Once Taylor Miller left, Cliff didn't seem viable.

Recasts on shows: good, bad, in between
Good question. I think the first major recast would have been the lead on 'First Hundred Years' I guess there would have been an announcement as viewers would have been surprised and puzzled as to why there was a different face onscreen.

Rosemary Forsyth had a very stern countenance - not a lot of the vulnerability needed for Alice.

Sally is no angel but the wrath poured down upon her from almost every character is way too much. Jack can forgive Victor and Phyllis but he treats Sally like she's personally responsible for Covid.

Jada is certainly an out there choice. No denying she is a great actress but I can't see her as Alice. Jada as Carolee worked in that physically she fit the look for Carolee. It's like suggesting Jacquie Courtney could have stepped in as Carolee. I think recasts work best when there is some sort of physical resemblance. That's how its mostly done.

Since the wedding I have tuned out, again relying on recaps and skimming through downloads as there is NOTHING of interest going on. The wedding was a bust. Taking a bunch of characters to a new locale for a marriage where the groom is suspect and you would expect high drama. A murder? an attempted murder? Victoria turning on Ashland as she takes her vows? Ashland disappearing? Jack banging Phyllis? An original character returning with a secret? But no, just the usual conversations in a different setting. It was expected that a couple of new sets would keep us enthralled. So after that it's back to more of the same in GC. Poor Jack, no workplace, no family and now no home. Just wandering into frame on his cell phone surprised to once again run into Phyllis one sleeve and then devoting his time to listen to her self indulgent blather. They should have saved the money from Tuscany to create some offices, populate the sets with extras and give the women some classy clothes. Does Morina even watch the show? i'd be embarrassed to have my name in the credits as being responsible for this.
