Y&R Did Jack/Johnny get a send off or just vanish? Anthony Herrera got the lead in the Mandrake pilot for NBC.It probably filmed early 78. Do we know any of the actors in the Conway story apart fom Jody (Cyntia Eilbacher)?

Look into the past - 1975
I'm not sure of the timeline, without checking but didn't Joann pop up again and there's talk of her working at the Golden Comb as a life coach type of thing? I guess some of this was due to actors not on contract and that flexibility for the writers. Also, Bill Bell would sometimes try something out onscreen and then not follow through. We were much more aware of this come the 80's when backstage stuff was reported more openly.

Y&R September 2021 Discussion Thread
Funny but that's how they look to me all the time. Quick question- With Adam and Chelsea always claiming their deep parental love for Connor (who they seem quite happy to ship out of town) have either of them ever shown any interest in their other children? I know Chelsea willingly gave up Johnny to Billy and Victoria, but that was before those two split up and hooked up with others. Does Chelsea really not care for the welfare of her child who is now practically being raised by a stranger(Lily). How convenient that in a town where people can run into each other several times in one day that Chelsea,Billy and Victoria never cross paths. Adam discovered Christian was his right? But never shows any interest in his other son?

Speaking of Pat, would Irna and Agnes ever pictured her as an alcoholic? Or for viperous Liz to become a gossipy old busybody?

Ratings from the 70's
Feb 1978 ABC -TV, which has been steadily ganing ground in daytime ratings against long time leader CBS -TV, appears to have edged into the number one position with a string of wins since the first of the year. The most recent Nielsen standings show ABC with an 8.2 average for the two weeks ending Feb. 3, with CBS pulling a 7.9 and NBC -TV a 6.6. A number of factors have probably contributed to the turnover. ABC's recent gains in TV affiliates and the resulting improved clearances haven't hurt. All three networks lost daytime viewers with the drops in homes using television over the last year, but ABC lost less than its competitors. According to ABC's figures, its HUT levels in the fourth quarter of 1977 were 3% off what they were for the same period in 1976, while CBS was off 13% and NBC 14 %. Probably most importantly, ABC has made a number of changes in its daytime schedule in the last year, with the goal of establishing a solid block of soap operas in the afternoon All My Children was expanded from 30 minutes to an hour last April, and General Hospital and One Life to Live both expanded from 45 minutes to an hour Jan. 16. ABC is convinced the strategy has worked, and the numbers don't contradict that view.

Radio Soap Opera Discussion
I know throughout the years there have been characters with the same names, but I wonder if particular writers have re-used names as this example from Irna? Karen Adams being a fairly nondescript name, perhaps it was just coincidence or a little in joke that amused Irna.

ALL: Proposed Soaps Over The Years
Dec 1977 Agnes Nixon's primetime soap 'Beggars and Choosers' originally scheduled to air on ABC in May 77 was sidetracked by her involvement in the expansion of All My Children and now is being developed as a 4-6 hour 'novel for television'.

Dallas Discussion Thread
Variety reported in Dec 77 that CBS had placed an order for Dallas starring Linda Evans. Has anyone ever heard of Linda's involvement? Linda had recently had a shortlived CBS series 'Hunter' so maybe they were interested in working with her again.

Y&R/B&B September/Early Fall Spoilers
Please make it stop! I actually heard Billy talking about journalism as though he had some knowledge of the subject. Does anybody find this interesting or believable? Big brave men rescue damsel in distress. By stating (from a table from Society) in no uncertain terms that she will make Sutton pay for her father's death.

Thanks for the article. It seems every 1960's columnist had to take a shot at the soaps. Probably had never seen one. Just part of the sexism of that time.

Y&R September 2021 Discussion Thread
Who knows? I thought it might be budget related but we have a new Noah coming... There doesn't seem to be any story related reason. Had Abby reached out to Stitch, then that relationship could have grown and then Chance returns, but that didn;t happen. Will we see Nina again?

Soaps & Institutional Memory
Wasn't Agnes Nixon at one point barred from the writer's room? I think the execs were more interested in what's happening at the moment than bothering if it contradicted the past. Even shows that had a stability like Bell's Y&R and Irna at ATWT dropped characters and plots that jarred with viewers. For years Jill acted as though she had no family of her own. I remember Erica Slezak ad libbed a mention of Joe's family at his funeral as the writers didn't reference them, so often it is the actors who have that memory within the character. Off topic slightly, Peyton Place being 2 aweek primetime serial had a different structure to daytime-it was much easier for them to keep a tighter rein on the format. They didn't face actors leaving, competition from other soaps, low budgets etc. Nonetheless,PP could have played as a daily serial. There were lots of moments and plot points that were missed due to lack of time.
