I mean there is no rationalization for that point, except it was a live show, they had a limited amount of time during the commercial, other awards were presented during the commercials, and Denzel, Spielberg, and others were vying for Will's attention.

And the ratings surged after the slap (although that is devious and they had no way of knowing the ratings would surge during the ceremony).

I dont believe that for one second. How the heck do you ask someone to leave and then allow them onstage to accept an award. Make that make sense? Had it been true, they would have cut out that award and released a press release after the show.

TBH, I am very dubious on the claim that he was asked to leave as it seems to have been made belatedly, after a different claim had been made.

JMO but the Academy knows they're being criticized for allowing Will to accept his award and give a speech onstage and on camera and are self-conscious about appearing like they weren't proactive about the situation, which we know they weren't.

They were probably relying on Chris to press charges and Chris being Black and probably imagining both he and Will getting shot by police should he contact them, elected not to take that type of action.

With all the criticism they take over not having enough nominees and winners of color there was no way they were going to keep Will from accepting his award on stage and having him escorted out was even less likely. The Academy would prefer dealing with complaints over ones of him being thrown out.

I doubt it as well - I think if they had insisted he and Jada would have left. I tend to believe the initial stories that everyone was paralyzed about what to do. I also think they were not expecting some of the backlash they have gotten from some in the industry and were hoping this would just be seen as a spectcacle/pop culture moment.

Count me in as another one who has doubts about the story about the Academy asking Will to leave afterwards. I think they may be putting out that report in respond to the criticism they have received regarding this incident. I also think that the punishment they dole out could be significantly impacted by that as well.

I still think that things are being overblown, by a lot of people. Including people that like to make things about themselves, people that like to get worked over stuff and those that don't have anything better to do. Will shouldn't have done it, but there are people that are being very OTT with their reactions and takes.

Agree.  With all of it.

Good point!

The only other time I can recall someone getting slapped at the Oscars was in "A Star Is Born" - and that was just a movie!

When someone shows you who they are the first time....

    • I grew up in a neighborhood behind the gates and it really wasn't uncommon to have your house unlocked. In my neighborhood there was an armed gate before you enter the neighborhood and you have security patrolling 24/7. One thing that was common when I was in high school were for the kids whose parents were real estate agents to use their houses to throw house parties. It was easy because they were always unlocked.

    • I posted this a few weeks ago but it's worth popping up again as Grant does get asked about return rumors, that Paul Rauch had tried to get the show revived for years but P&G just would not sell it.

    • If those two crazy (and I do mean crazy!) kids can't make it, where's the hope for the rest of us?!

    •   Sonia was on the director rotation at DAYS. On BTG, Sonia had been credited as a producer.  May 23 was her first episode directing BTG.
    • And Kim Zimmer also gave interviews where she admitted to some of her behavior and she apologized for it. I give her credit for admitting her wrongdoing and taking responsibility because other actresses would not have done that.  BTW, I will miss John Payne from your avatar.

JFP's GL post-1993 may have needed Kim Zimmer to try to salvage the mess that was made of the show (and that turned out to be another disaster), but GL post Zimmer's departure was fantastic. Forbes showed GL didn't need Zimmer as well. I also think Santa Barbara didn't help her ego either since Sydney Penny got the attention, and most SB viewers loathed Zimmer's Jodie character. To be fair, I think a big part of the problem was the writing and the producing, but since Zimmer thinks Rauch is such a genius, that's on her.
    • Forbes also likely got the primetime career Zimmer wanted - never a huge star, admittedly, but a stalwart, able to dip in and out when she saw fit and generally not paying an industry price. Zimmer felt extremely hurt by her lack of success after leaving GL and even more hurt when JFP made it clear GL had moved on from Reva. (JFP, self-sabotaging as ever, soon made it clear that was not actually the case, but with a stronger producer, GL could have genuinely moved on from Reva) That's interesting. I suppose that's what they always say, and there was some precedent as Passions had moved to Direct TV. I guess Passions being canned so fast (faster than many expected, I think) put a big nail in the coffin. And we haven't had any revivals or moves since that have worked, even though Neighbours came close.  I'll try to find that promo.
    • Oh wow - I must see this promo!  Anyone have a copy/link to it? I can't believe they 'accidentally' did that, and if so, I wonder if someone got in trouble haha. Kim did mention in Chapter 1 that the 'suits' dangled some hopeful carrots for a long time, saying they would pitch the show and try and get it on another network or online somehow where it would be cheaper. They even heard rumors that Lifetime would pick it up, so it gave some folks hope for a little while, but sadly nothing came of it. Kim said she was already resolved that it would never go anywhere and she had peace of mind about that shortly after the announcement.
    • Same. I absolutely agree. It's a real shame, too. I had a lot of hope for the Character.
