Soaps and Their Counterparts in the Real World
A lot of people msy have been incredulous at a Black family owning a chain of ice cream parlours (or did that have to do with them being located in Chicago?) but I looked it up and there are quite a few ice cream parlours owned by Black families. I saw at least one that predated the debut of Generations too.

It seems as if many Republicans are willing to bide their time, while they play both sides against the middle, hoping to ascend the chain of command. Some Democrats want to do this too but aren't as naked in their desire to do this. Also, most Democrats tend to tie their image of being a successful politician to the relative well-being of their constituents. Most Republicans seem not to care as much.

Pluto T.V. and soaps
Oh, Happy Birthday is a ridiculous amount, I know that. ATWT characters sang "Always" for Chrisband Nancy Hughes' anniversary party in 1986, also the show's 30th anniversary. I do want to know about a middle-of-the-road 80s song, which rarely gets airplay, which, the show I am thinking about mostly used, except for one year that featured a nightclub. I just wonder because I weny to Crackle and Who's The Boss" still plays Joe Jackson's "Stepping Out", Miami Vice, the series doesn't dub over Phil Collins' music. In terms of movies, Rihanna memorably gave permission to a film to use one of her biggest hits for f-r-e-e. I just wonder how much of an effort do some of these entities try. I suspect P&G maybe asked one artist and didn't bother with the rest. The process seems opaque.

Of course, but does John Q. (😬) Public know this? I'd be willing to bet a small amount that most Americans don't even think about Congressional committees and which one their representative sits on.

It was elements in the GOP screaming for Liz Cheney's head, not Democrats though. That's an internecine war, that looks to already been won by the most extreme elements. All Democrats should do is focus on their/Potus Joe's agenda and prosecute the case at the impeachment trial. So far, they seem fairly focused. That's what it looks like to most people, I would believe. Also, MTG is not even being expelled, she is being removed from a couple of committees. I'm not even sure that most Americans know what this entails-most would probably see a committee seat as a privilege anyway.

I hope that there will be counseling services made available for these families. Making them whole again (or at least the attempt to) entails more than reunification, although this is obviously an important start. From what I am seeing, Speaker Pelosi's letter is having some impact. Folks seem to be coming for McCarthy right now. The Q-CA label was a masterstroke.

Soaps and Their Counterparts in the Real World
This topic was inspired by @mikelyons post about realism in soaps (or lack thereof). As touch and go as realism can sometimes be on daytime soaps, there are certain totems that signify life in the real world. For me, some of the companies, characters that exist/existed on soaps seem to have counterparts in the real world. For example, Y&R's Jabot Cosmetics reminds me of Estee Lauder, both family owned cosmetic/skincare companies. ATWT- Walsh Industries-Worldwide is reminiscent of McKinsey, a management consultant firm. ATWT- Tad Channing, a venomous, contemptible real estate devloper/builder who left behind chaos, financial ruin and attempted rapes on his road to ignominy and perdition, reminds me of...well, I refuse to mention him by name at this point. Can you think of any soaps, whether companies, characters, etc., that have real life counterparts?

Fun with contracts!
I can see some negotiation going on for an actor to be allowed to keep some clothing and shoes (I am dubious about the jewelry though, I don't see Cartier or Harry Winston giving pieces away but perhaps at a reduced rate?). Actors having their wardrobe cited in the credits happened frequently on ATWT, the announcer (Dan Region e.g.) would even state it during the closing credits. That seems to benefit the sponsor mire than anyone else.

Not since the days of tape delay have I gotten this much sleep at night during the Australian summer season. I think I have watched about 1.5 matches so far.

Some of these sound more like perks, rather than contractual arrangements, lol.

Pluto T.V. and soaps
I'd like to really know what is the exact figure. Does anybody know? I'm curious. I was watching clips of the sitcom "Everybody Hates Chris" and noticed the rampant use of popular music from the 1980s, in particular. As funny as I found that show, they're no Grey's Anatomy, I doubt that the sitcom had a very large budget, having aired on WB. Also, SoapClassics "scrubbed" popular music from a number of their episodes before they sold them as part of DVD collections. I guess it was about priorities back then. I'd really like to see a cost breakdown. With the prominence of streaming, there are sitcoms and movies taking up residence on freebie/ad-supported platforms like Crackle and Tubi and Pluto TV that use popular music in their episodes. Who pays for Miami Vice's use of music? lol

YR: You're Fired! Actor out ...
I know it's not funny but I admit, I chuckled. Personally, I am not surprised they lied. Y&R just doesn't care at this point. Whatever's the path of least resistance. A recasted Chance will be back in six weeks. Or maybe Boaz lied? Oh well, y'all let me know who they decide on as the next Chance.

Pluto T.V. and soaps
Some while ago, I posted an article about P&G wanting to engage in streaming some type of "Choose your own adventure" dramas, etc., as a method of what they hoped would be some sort of clever product placement for their products. Well, some might say that this sounds a hell of a lot like a 21st century version of the daytime drama that began with a soap opera produced by their company! P&G should not be allowed to get up on their virtual "soap box" on Irna Phillips' corner of the Internet and spread the misinformation that they have no interest in soaps. Of course they do. They just don't value their classic daytime soaps, preferring to relegate their daytime dramas to the dustbin of television history. They see GL, ATWT, EON, AW, etc. as relics of a bygone era. They don't see that these shows can still entertain the way any classic television show can. Extreme short-sided thinking, but it didn't just start when these soaps were cancelled--that sentiment been there all along.

Thank you. For too long, the reflexive line has been about music rights when it's doubtful that this is at the heart of the matter. SoapNet used to air plenty of classic soaps, many that had use of music. Are people trying to say that Ryan's Hope never used music cues? The issue was with P&G. The issue remains P&G and how they regard their soaps.

Ming-Na was such a great find. I'd like to not believe that soap audiences were racist and homophobic but sadly when I see that the black family before Jessica's even came on was shelved just as they were finally getting good story, it didn't surprise me that/if viewers had a fit over Hank and Lien, both werr compelling characters, even if a bit too tolerant of other people's nonsense. 1989 really picked back up again though.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
That next episode was briefly on YouTube, one of the many P&G episodes that were pulled following disputes. From what I remember, Beau and the police, which included Roy and Lt. McCluskey got to the house in time. I'm not sure but I think Laura had some silver letter opener, (which belonged to Bob and/or Kim) and when it appeared that she might stab Bob, she turned it on herself and claimed that everyone would assume that Bob killed her. She accused Bob of giving her no other choice. As she's about to stab herself, the police and Beau arrive to stop Laura. Beau and Bob contact Dr. Michaels who sedates and counsels a catatonic Laura, who is hospitalized at Memorial, where I think she was questioned by the police and she admits to killing Herb Petrie (can't believe I remembered his name!), the general manager at WOAK. It is determined that it is unlikely that Laura will ever be mentally capable and will have to be institutionalized. That year was interesting, not just because of the WGA strike but also because Laura exits and a few short months later, Lillith arrives and that, Marland did write.

Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread
Barbados should not have allowed it. Australia, that barred their own citizens from entering the country for months, got a lot of flack recently for allowing tennis players to enter on chartered flights, even under strict quarantine and frequent testing. Australia, with less than 1,000 deaths over the past year, has handled the pandemic much better than the U.K., which should not ge allowed to export disease to their former colonies that have yet to get access to vaccine for their population. Great Britain to a large extent, as well as the U.S. is the reason why any of the islands in the Caribbean even have COVID-19 in the first place. It's really very thoughtless and entitled. And a colonizing instinct.

YR: You're Fired! Actor out ...
Someone on twitter cited his good morals. Werr they talking about the character or the actor? The character can easily be brought back by spring. I have been trying to imply and flat out state this, in more than one post now. The company doesn't have to cite a reason for not extending a contract. If they've done so, it's more as a courtesy (probably not wanting to look like the "bad guy"), not due to any legal obligation.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
The guy in the tube was the married (with kids) general manager of WOAK. Laura jumped ship after initially working for Kim (without even giving Kim a heads up) to work for him after convincing him to hire her, citing manufactured threats from Bob. The story came to a resolution sometime around Barbara and Hal's wedding reception. There was a video on YouTube containing the episode of what happened after Laura managed to lure Bob to the house but it was taken down unfortunately. Beau eventually ended up escorting his sister back to Ohio to an institution for the mentally insane.

Y&R January 2021 Discussion Thread
When I say there was a lack of nuance, I meant in how the affair came to an end and turning Carmine into a wild-eyed lunatic. Writing Carmine as a legitimate choice of partner, even if, ultimately , Lauren chose to reconcile with Michael would have added a layer of complexity to the story-- which would have felt more adult and less like the beginning of a teen slasher movie. But it was what it was. KG was going for "Unfaithful" but failed to find the nuance at the crux of that story--(that Richard Gere's hasty, reckless and accidentally committed, act sprang from hurt, a sense of betrayal, anger, jealousy and bruised ego, rather than an actual need to protect his wife and Diane Lane's character's complicity in helping to cover up her husband's actions-- ultimately, she is the one who protects her husband, not the other way around).
