I mean, if he wants to write a soap that doesn't take itself very seriously, fine, I am open to it.
But there are ways to do it and there are *ways*. He can do it without being lame and/or disrespecting the audience and the character.
Beyond Salem was fluffy, silly and funny and still managed to celebrate the characters and respect the audience and tell an acceptable story.
So it is not like he can't wink at the audience and STILL do something decent soap-wise.
But on the main show I am not feeling a vision or a sense of purpose or tone or inspiration from the show as of late. It is meandering with a couple of headline-grabbing ideas that could work if he didn't play them as cheaply (narrative-wise, not budget-wise).
When he was writing OLTL or GH, I didn't love all he did, far from it, but I had a sense of what he was trying to do with the shows. I am very confused what his DOOL is supposed to be conveying to the audience.
Which brings it back to what you said: he doesn't seem to actually like the show he is writing for.

One thing that I wish RC would realize that Ben and Ciara are much more tolerable when they’re actually doing something, rather than just kissing each other’s asses

Agreed.

Even the best soap is going to have boring episodes once in a while. It’s just the structure of the medium. I have no problem so far with the way the storyline is playing out.

lol

One minute into today's episode and I'm already confused. Abby asks Chad if he wants to play John because he doesn't trust her alone with curly-haired EJ. Huh?! How in the world could they possibly know about EJ asking to play John? There isn't even follow up today with Johnny and EJ. Did Johnny give EJ the part off screen, and then Abby and Chad also found out about it off screen while they were putting the kids to bed? Huh? I feel like someone messed up by putting that line in there.

I wouldn’t say he doesn’t like it.  But he also is not at all reverent to it.  Which under strong creative teams can bring a show to new heights- look at what Lemay accomplished with AW, Monty with GH, and even Reilly with DAYS the longer he was there.  Ron is not that talented though.

He grew up a fan of the Monty era GH.  That fandom was present in his writing- the good and the bad.  He had a lot of history at OLTL- and as outlandish as he could be, you could still see his reverence.

He didn’t have any emotional connection with DAYS when he took the job.  He also is writing a show where he will never get any instant gratification from the audience, even trolling them, because of how far ahead the show is.

That's a smarter way to put what I meant and YES I fully agree.
Indeed you could tell he had loved OLTL and GH for a long time and was inspired - for better or worse - by these universes.
I just don't feel any love or inspiration from his Days work.

Someone mentioned a soap that doesn't take itself seriously. I think Gary Tomlin era OLTL mastered this from around 2000-2002. The live week stuff and Asa taking his death, Nikki Smith, Roxi stuff has serious and comedic elements to them, even is there were some crappy fluff stories. But back to DAYS...

Stop antagonizing users with your comments. If you don't like what someone says, ignore them and make your own comment that's on topic. All we've seen you post since you registered has been negative responses to other users. Clearly you don't like the people here, and are most definitely a former poster but hiding under a VPN so we can't trace you (yet). Why you get a kick out of registering and wasting your time being so negative, I have no idea. Whatever floats your boat.

I do think he has a nice body but when did he get all those awful tats?

It looked better on TV.  His new look reminded me of Dan J. Kroll.

    • I don't think he ever gained much traction on GH. He should have stayed with The Doctors. Was Mark just a toned-down version of Nick? Were they basically the same character?
    • All I can think of is if a lot of big names were leaving around that time she wanted him back as a stopgap, although I have never seen any real evidence that he was popular with GH viewers.
    • I loved watching Shanice hand Leslie her ass and finally shutting her up. It was so good. I also love Martin & Smitty's family.  Anita has to have some sort of plan giving Leslie the tickets to mail for Winterfest. She has to be setting her up for a fall. It's pretty obvious to me Vernon is not cheating with Sharon. I think Sharon is helping him with his terrible singing voice for Winterfest. I still believe Bill & Dani are endgame but I love Dani & Andre too. I am definitely enjoying this story. And making Hayley a black widow is a nice twist.
    • Sorry for the spam. Wasn't sure where to put this, it's from Tony Geary's husband's IG. Tony watching Genie and Maurice on Mo's show.
    • This show is really trundling along BTW. When is someone going to show up to slit Beastmaster's throat or crack the whip on metrosexual Sidwell? (BTW, openly presenting this cheery bon vivant as casually bisexual would at least be something vaguely diverting.) At least kill Brennan by year's end. I'm bored.
    • She told Vanessa to "DOUBLE her offer" on the Jarvis house.  The Jarvis family accepted the doubled price.  Assuming the house has an appraised value of $2,000,000, she's theoretically paid the Jarvis family $4,000,000 for the house.  The bank would loan Leslie 80% of the appraised value ($1,600,000), and Leslie had to pay the balance with cash at closing --- $2,200,000.  She only had ONE million.  Where the hell did she get the rest?!  And now she's got contractors working on the house all day & half the night.  Who's paying THEM?  I keep thinking all this will crash around her.  Either that or the writers have absolutely no idea the limits of a million dollars.  Sounds like a "lot of money", but it obviously ain't when we look at Leslie's spending since she got that million dollar check in August.

    • Vernon is an idiot. Why would he have Sharon in the same hotel that Leslie is staying at?
    • Yes, that out of the blue return was odd. Maybe GG found a forgotten clause in the contract he signed when he was wooed to ABC and they were forced to take him back! Like George Reinholt he talked about the contract that promised him primetime roles. But it was loaded in the networks favor. I think it was Gloria Loring that re-signed at Days on the promise of primetime opportunities, but that was all it was- she was put up for guest spots and TV movies but not necessarily guaranteed that she get the role.
    • I still am baffled by why Monty brought back stunt hire Gerald Gordon in the early '80s out of nowhere for like a year. I haven't found anyone who can come up with a thing he did in that second stint of note.
