Watching the classic episode from Friday, I have to say I really love seeing a blonde Heather Tom. The episode, so far, is really what a true soap looks like. The budget though! It's clear the show had money and time on its hands. The amount of closeup shots on actor faces as they went from scene to scene didn't feel unnecessary. It felt right, especially the one of Victor on the phone with Miguel and then talking under his breath when Miguel tells him that Nikki doesn't want to be found.

 

I also noticed that even though I know this history, I'm REALLY involved with what's gonna happen next. The consequences facing these characters as they lie and cheat feels really, real.

God bless you, Mrs. C. You knew what was up, and Walton finally kinda admits it was horrible.

 

I adore Walton but she's not the type of actor who should be giving storyline ideas; she liked the mother/daughter fiasco, suggested the story that led to Cane, and her vision of Jill having a strong partner to always be around with goes very much against what Jill should be doing. While I can see Jill being less of an outsider by now, with relationships etc, she should always be running around interfering in others' lives. lol

 

That's exactly right. I think it was Sara Bibel who once said that Jill ringing Katherine's doorbell was a genuine cliffhanger, and it was because of the great character work the show had invested in. You indeed just knew whatever would follow would be worth it. And, of course, they still delivered their shockers, too!

In today's intro, Doug Davidson specifically addressed longtime viewers by saying, in regards to Cassandra, "if you remember, she was nothing but trouble." I know that's a tiny, tiny thing, but it kind of backs up an argument that they're focusing more on longtime viewers than newer viewers with episode selection here.

ETA: Good God, that Jill/Katherine scene is great, and BD was amazing in it from start to finish.

You don't see that type of subtlety or quiet, cold rage in scenes today, especially with characters who are women. Today's Y&R would've had Jill and Esther bickering from the moment Jill arrived and Katherine playing referee before barking at both Jill and Esther.

Perhaps because Daytime Emmys, which became the arbiter of what was scene as high-level performances seemed to overwhelmingly award more maudlin performances, the writers dispensed with the subtleties and went in favor of outright crying, shrieking and wailing in scenes. And yelling, cannot forget the yelling.

 

I assumed it was an excuse she threw out there because she despised her storylines and thought it wasn't worth showing up for what was being written for her. I'm surprised people take these actors so literally.

I'm not that interested in JW's reasons, since I don't like her take on Jill and I don't like her storyline suggestions (but I do like her as a person from what I've seen in interviews). If she did make up an excuse, at least she should be consistent with it, I think...

      Another character driven show with interconnecting plots that make sense. I like that we go from one character, like Sarah, learning that EJ wants to buy the hospital, casually mentioning it to Xander who now has that intel. The only down today was not seeing Steve and Shawn breaking into the lab. I wonder if Dr Poofy Hair will inform EJ about Xander's call. I loved Abe talking to Chanel about losing Isaac and giving her comfort. And helping her voice her fears about Johnny. Kayla standing up to EJ is great. Kayla, freed from Ron, has been great. I am loving all her air time. And Sarah telling her that EJ must be up to something if he wants the hospital is very smart. She would probably clue in to the sepsis research being the big thing if she wasn't choking to death. I assume Felicity messed up the scones and dropped in cleaning fluid or something. Sarah said it tasted weird. They are never getting that honeymoon, are they? Xander has no clue what job Johnny can do. Johnny knows this too. Xander wants to legitimize his takeover by hiring a Dimera. Johnny wants to stick it to EJ. The honesty is refreshing. I want to like Cat and Chad but they are just so awkward. And none of their scenes work for me. Marlena and EJ was very good. I like her wanting to help him but also scared to death for Belle. Makes perfect sense that she is conflicted. I also liked her softly asking Johnny if he needed her to stay once EJ walked in. Ron never cared about this relationship either, but now she is acting like his granny.

      Thanks, interesting and so believable (no Lonatrat or Clones...)Instead of the Lewis family he should have made the Oil family Granger...even if the audience didn't remember that one off character it would have been interesting to tie it into the fictional GL world.

      When you bring up what I like to call "Shapiro's Folly" you think Dano's acting choices mattered? I ask because I don't think so. As far as I could tell almost universally the ABC fans hated the very idea of her being on all 4 shows! And, BTW, the headwriters also hated it, at least according to comments made by Passanante. But, it is not hard to imagine that they'd feel that way. And, I agreed. If she wanted success she should have planted "Rae" on one & given up her idea of branding, or whatever it was that she was after.

      Okay, well her reasons were that she had a mandate to reduce the size of the cast & she had another mandate to make the cast overall younger, so her reason for picking Donna to off was because she was too old.  So, is that what you understand? Or are you thinking of something else? Which if so, I would be delighted to hear about it!  She had arbitrarily picked 50 as the age people needed to be younger than.  And, that is why she got rid of both Bridget & Spencer Harrison.  And, getting rid of Bridget was another of her horrible ideas.  Why do you refer to her as the Face of the Show? Don't feel bad. I am a major Cass fan & I don't remember him with Donna either, LOL! Can we say forgettable? And, yes, Lila was the most last minute of last minutes!!!!

      This is AWESOME, thank you for taking the time to post this! My first thought: My memory is a lot better than I thought it was, LOL! The first episode I clearly remember watching had a scene of Ed confronting Holly about Christina's paternity. He lamented how wonderful things had been over Christmas, so looks like I started watching the show early 1976. The only thing puzzling me is where is Evie? I thought she was around BEFORE Rita got involved with Tim, but maybe that's one gap in my memory. It makes Rita look slightly better--in that case, she didn't seduce Tim knowing her sister had a crush on him.
