Lynn Bernay, 1931-2008: Friends say actress, dancer was 'larger than life'

Lynn Bernay, a dancer, actor and film costumer who had lived in Santa Fe off and on since the mid-1980s, died of brain cancer Tuesday at age 77.

Bernay, a former Hollywood insider, helped students discover writing and painting as forms of expression in a class she taught at the Santa Fe Community College with her friend Carol Cellucci. She coordinated Clothesline 2005, a fashion show presented by the Santa Fe Art Institute for the Southwest Design Conference, which drew national designers to Santa Fe.

Bernay was born and raised in New York City. In 1947, prior to graduating from high school, she began a professional dance career as a Radio City Rockette. She danced in Can Can and other musical hits on Broadway, and in the movie adaptations of Guys and Dolls and The Pajama Game.

Bernay also danced through the '50s and '60s in Singing in the Rain, and the Alan Freed series, Don't Knock the Rock, among others. She danced at the Copa Cabana and in most of the well-known TV variety shows back then including The Ed Sullivan Show, The Milton Berle Show and The Jackie Gleason Show

In an interview for a community college publication, Bernay said she was in love with Gene Kelly. "I had seen all of his movies so I ran away to Hollywood to meet him." She said she took a tour bus to the MGM lot, hid in the ladies' restroom until the bus left and then found the set where Kelly was filming Singing in the Rain. She introduced herself to him and said she wanted to dance in his movie. According to the story, he asked if she could do the Charleston. When she showed him she could, she started work the next day.

In her early 30s, she moved on to acting, playing, she said, bad girls, housewives, good girls and hookers. Looking to reinvent herself yet again, she became a production manager for her friend Jack Nicholson, which led directly to a new career as a costume supervisor and designer. Bernay designed feature films including Home Alone and Hearts of the West. She also designed TV movies in New Mexico.

"All who had the opportunity to work with her will remember Lynn as a bold, decisive, innovative and imaginative force. Her creativity, energy and zest for life made her seem, at times, larger than life," said her friend Richard Lange.

Bernay was also an accomplished painter, printmaker and mixed-media artist. Her work often addressed social and political issues and is in collections including several Hilton Hotels, Mobil Oil Corporation, Cincinnati Airport, and the Quail Run Development.

Bernay served as a volunteer teaching art to children in South Africa; she brought solace to patients at the cancer center at Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center; and was a Big Sister to several young children.

"She had the mouth of a sailor, the soul of an artist, the face of an angel, the compassion of a saint, the courage of a lion, and a heart as big as the world," Lange said. "Milton Berle described her as 'one of the funniest women I know,' something her friends can attest to, as they recall rolling on the floor and convulsing with laughter at her humor."

Bernay is survived by her sister, Carol Schwirck; her brother-in-law, Steve; niece, Jessica Letson and husband Ben; grandnieces Hope and Kelly Letson.

A memorial to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 21 at a location to be determined. An open house will follow at Bernay's home, 43ll Lost Feather, in the Nava Adé neighborhood.

Just did a new round of research recently on the missing actors. Finally tracked down Pat Hornung. Having been married to Paul Hornung, one would think she wouldn't have been too hard to find, but never did untl this week.

Yes, always! Found a ton of good new info in this batch. Hadn't checked the birthdays in a long time. So some new ones are now posted on IMDB, others you have to track down some clues but you eventually get there.

In the writer's thread, I found 2 of the 4 writers who are listed as deceased per WGA, but we didn't have any details of their birth/death until now: Paul Harrison and John Stannard.

Blair Davies was a long time to find, but the first hit was someone mentioning he was in the 1940 census married to Virginia Barton living in a Manhattan hotel. The name listed seems to be Naniel B Davies, which put me on the track that his real first name was Daniel. And additional searching found the actor.

I was in the middle of typing up more hoppers Friday when I got a call that my mother and aunt got food poisoning. They asked me to host family Easter, so I spent the weekend rushing through cleaning, shopping for last minute stuff and cooking. I'm just getting back to these now after sleeping the day away today...

Eddie Drueding posted in my group that he identified a role for Ron Holgate.(Wikipedia had him appearing on AW, but Eddie identified him last week).

He appeared in the 6/8/1993 episode as a prison doctor in scenes with Grant and Ryan.

This led me to look up Holgate, a theatre actor. He also appeared on OLTL as Russell Price and on GL in an unknown (yet) role

The AWHP also put up a minor character profile for Dr. Pamela Bondi ( not to be confused with Trump's pit - bull) Susan Bigelow appeared 1/23/1986 - 5/22/1986.
