I wouldn't exactly call Ellie a dayplayer. She was heavy recurring and got more airtime and story than many on contract. I guess your latter point remains though

Dayplayer was too strong, but she was a short term character with no connections, an obvious throwaway. Plus having her piss away her convictions to raise Georgie made me cringe.

Was JB's Carly the only Carly that never gotten pregnant or had a false pregnancy?

I don't think Ellie never wanted kids. She just didn't feel it necessary to have her own kids. I never heard her say that she wouldn't adopt if she decided to be a mother.

The problem with Spinelli was that he wanted his own biological kid(s), not that Ellie didn't want kids at all.

That's true for all of ABC Daytime. It's been nonstop baby rabies since the turn of the century.

Women had better writing in the crazy 80s. During the 80s Tania had a baby, Simone had a baby, and Anna had a miscarriage. Felicia might have been 1990. That's all that comes to mind. Susan Moore I guess opened up the 80s with Jason. 10 years four kids. No one lacked for story.

It's a crutch for bad writers that's all. Baby stories write themselves: sex, fainting, pregnancy test, WTD, miscarriage/emergency delivery, kid lives (paternity reveal/kidnapping/custody battle) or dies (couple falls apart from the grief), kid disappears from canvas until SORASing, parents start boning other people and the cycle begins again.

The goods one's don't though. The Ryan Fenelli baby story on Ryan's Hope was one of the best examples of character (Jack) writing and development I've ever seen on a soap. Jillian's story with Edmund was pretty good too and no replacement baby a year later either.

If anything these ridiculous baby stories we are getting now highlight the terrible, lazy writing. Nina 20 years in a coma is baby obsessed and insane. Her husband (a doctor no less) who was with another woman two weeks ago decides to go along with this insanity. Hey, you want a baby Nina, no problem! She goes to her DOCTOR (!!) and tells her she knows she's pregnant because she's had sex last night. Does her doctor question this and think it's odd, perhaps even slightly delusional? Not really. Turns out she's in menopause. Does her doctor wonder why 40+ Nina hasn't noticed she hasn't had a period since waking up? That it might be a wee bit of a barrier to conception? Nope, no red flags there. Two doctors and neither of them get an inkling of psychological disturbance? M'kay. But we're the bad guys because we call bullshit on this shallow parody of soap.

to her credit, Britt did look at Nina like she was crazy and told her it would be impossible for her to know she was pregnant that soon. When Nina wasn't letting up, she decided to do the checkup (which would have revealed the lack of a period) and confirmed that she was going through menopause. She then ended her consultation with Nina by suggesting she seek psychiatric help to deal with the loss of her baby and inability to have another, by giving her Kevin's card. Silas' behavior may have been off but I think the writers covered everything well with Britt. She did exactly what a doctor would in this situation and didn't just blindly accept Nina's delusions

Is it just me or are they not using the actors abilities very well.

It depends on the actor. ;)

Julia makes a solid point, though, in her last sentence. Time and again, the writers throw in(s)ane plot twists at the viewers. They place a premium on hype and shock value over character, history and plain common sense. And if we don't think what they have done is brilliant, we are (sorry, Emily Dickinson) straightaway dangerous and handled with chains.

It's possible that Nina was still having periods and just going into menopause. The writing is awful with this storyline however.

I disagree with you. I think a doctor would have pursued it much more vigorously.

If Nina were still having periods it would be perimenopause and getting pregnant would not be impossible. That's how change of life babies happen.

the thing is we didn't see the actual examination, so it presumably happened offscreen in the time before Britt gave Nina her results

LMAO!

In the end, though, TPTB will read those responses and believe themselves to be on the right track. Because, in their minds, the more violent the fans' reactions, the more "successful" a character or a storyline is with the audience. It'd be better for those who loathe Nina to say nothing. Because nothing gets their goat more than pure apathy.
