AMC: Carruthers on new filming technique

Can we also take a moment and talk about the TRASH that is AMC's music? JEEZE.

ITA. AMC used to have some great pieces. I assume they still exist but they're pushed aside in favor of some real junk. I think the only show with worse music is Days.

AMC needs to take a cue from the Y&R which uses its music exceptionally.

The music on AMC is AWFUL, it's the cheapest crap I've ever heard in my fricking life. And their sets and "cutesy" hair/waredrobe is a joke. They need a new team working there.

The shaking camera is dreadful, it makes me wanna throw up. Don't those morons realize you aren't supposed to do it ALL THE TIME...EVER? Even reality shows do better than that!

I really feel like I am watching THE CITY. Only I liked THE CITY.

I like the film look, just the shaking needs to be cut down but I've gotten used to it. I heard though they are going back to the regular tape format in the fall and have already began shooting episodes under the old format anyway.

It's really too bad. Maybe the camermen and directors needed more training before it began or something because sometimes it was well done with no shakiness at all.

I actually think the show looks better. It seems to make the horrible lighting at AMC much less noticeable (not the camera movements, but the "film" feel).

Figures, I finally have something to praise about the show and almost everyone hates it lol. I'm always on the wrong side :(

I like it, when it's not completely shaky, I wish it would stick around for awhile

I like the new look too. It seems to have leveled off and I don't even notice it as much. I've noticed that some people look a lot better in the new format--Tad, for one. LOL

That's too bad (IMO). Again I liked it (some days were better than others but with time I think it would have smoothed out I think). My only complaint is JHC's "explanation". We've always been following the characters on their emotional journeys. I always had high regard for JHC but her comments are laughable.

Well, so long AMC! I only started watching it again because of the film look. (Love the characters and stories but two hours of NBC soaps is enough for me!)

Anyway, why laugh at JHC's comment, Agnes? She was speaking literally. For the first time, this *was* the way to literally "follow" the characters, get in the thick of the drama. That's not a stupid comment. It actually shows what the handhelds bring to soaps that traditional looks CANNOT. I feel AMC evolved with the look, it just needed practice to get it right. Now it's devolving by going back. Sorry, but if done right, the film look would make (and has made) that show look, production wise, ten times better.

As for the camera itself, the article said "a" steady cam, which may not mean the Steadi-Cam, the industry standard for those types of shots. Right? That may also be the problem. Because as far as I know, THE Steadi-Cam is so popular because it literally is all about no shakes, whatsoever.

RIP filmed look. :(

RIP evolution.

There's one background piece that sounds like the cheapest ripoff of "Saved The Best For Last" by Vanessa Williams. Everytime I hear that one, I just literally roll my eyes. The music cues on this show nowadays are SO uninspired.

I really feel like I am watching THE CITY. Only I liked THE CITY.

Agreed. I like this look for AMC, except they don't really have the "location shoots(NYC Exteriors)" and the HUGE sets to do this with.

I don't mind the camera shaking as long as I feel like the show moves at a fast pace. THE CITY did and met great success in terms of art.

All the new filiming tecnique does is make my stomach queasy.

I agree. Not liking the new technique at all.

WTF? Is she ok? I like her, but that was a dumb comment. I hate the new film technique.

  • Member

Um, okay, again, it wasn't a dumb comment. It was literal. Not figurative. So it was smart! Geez.

Their new technique looks like a cross between The Real World and a bad amatuer highschool film. Thank God they're going back to the old way which worked just fine for the past 50+ years of soap opera and all of television as a whole.

I wonder if Eden Riegel's return will signal a return to sanity for AMC. As of right now, I can't stomach the show for its messy story content and its messy aesthetical content.

I hate it on primetime too. I can't watch ER or any NBC drama without feeling nauseous.

I'm right there with you, my friend! If we had a skilled writing team and better actors, I would've thoroughly enjoyed watching the entire show as a whole because I dig the new technique.

Now, it's going back to the old way with the same shitty writing. Looks like I'll be taking another hiatus.

I like the new look too. It seems to have leveled off and I don't even notice it as much. I've noticed that some people look a lot better in the new format--Tad, for one. LOL

And I thought Simone looked great in the format, too.
