That was fantastic but it was completely dry and flat a scene later, as if a derecho swept into the Metro Court during the commercial break.

He lost the role because soaps SORAS kids all the time, and despite Frank's fixation on him Bechtel was neither talented nor popular enough to warrant locking him in like Kimberly McCullough or Jonathan Jackson. They are the exception, and he ain't it.

It's a reason why you keep Kimberly McCullough, Jonathan Jackson, or even Carly Schroeder on your show for years to come. And TPTB might not necessarily keep Nicholas Bechtel on your canvas for several reasons.

I'm just not a fan of smart-assed kids and NEVER liked Spencer.  I find the new Spencer far more to my liking.

Bechtel was really cute as a young child and Spencer was amusing at first. However, his shtick got old after awhile and I got really tired of how fixated on him TPTB seemed to be. I hated having to watch the kiddie triangle with Spencer, Cam, and Emma. I was glad when they sent Spencer to Europe and dreaded when NB would pop in. His version of Spencer stopped being fun and cute a long time ago. I'm all for the recast. Even if you were a fan, it's time to move on. He's a kid and kids almost always get recast and aged up on soaps. Like, I love the girl who plays Emma and I think it'd be cool if they could wait a couple years until she's a little older and bring her back to mix it up with the rest of the teens, but I'd understand if they recast instead because that's just how it goes on soaps.

The girl who plays Emma cannot act.

I think Bechtel ironically became a considerably better actor once he was on less and got older. But when he was frontburner as a little child he was unbearable. No matter how talented he is now, they were long overdue to recast.

A lot of times I don't really like Carly. That being said I have always thought she had good chemistry with Shawn and I thought their scenes at the pool were nice today. I also thought her scenes with Spencer/Joss were solid. NuSpencer continues to have a nice rapport with different characters on the canvas. I liked that him and Trina met up again, though it was very brief and Joss was also there. It's interesting we already have Joss warning Trina away from him and telling him that Trina is too good for him and out of his league. I think that could be foreshadowing that him and Trina will want to be together though other people like Joss will disapprove.

Also, Liz and Finn are now running around and telling/hinting towards people they care about that they are involved in Peter's disappearance. Pretty soon half the town might be involved in this secret too, lol. I did like Jason/Liz's scenes on Friday.

And I believe that Trina will end up overhearing Curtis/Portia talking about their past and get upset about that. She didn't seem too keen on them being together, though she pretended like she was. And Aunt Stella is continuing to meddle by intercepting those signed divorce papers. That will help extend the Jordan/Curtis/Portia triangle.

Talking about whether Spencer should have been recast, I often think about Starr Manning.

Now the connection of KA with the audience was stronger than Bechtel's and nobody (including me) would have accepted they recast.

But maybe this will be an unpopular thought bubble but with the benefit of hindsight and some distance from the death of the show, I sometimes wonder if the character wouldn't have benefitted from a courageous producer ripping the bandaid and recasting her in teenagehood. The emotional connection with having seen her grow up certainly was nice and compelling but I am not sure the qualities that made her such a fantastic child actress wore off very well when she aged.
I think Bechtell would have a similar trajectory.

We've seen Spencer shirtless at the pool three or four times in just the last week, yet Shawn and Curtis have their shirts on. What's up with that? Shawn's been out of jail for five seconds and Carly is already making it all about her and trying to get him back into the mob. I did laugh at her thanking him for stabbing Jason.

So now Curtis is going to look at old case files to see if he can help find out who shot Hayden. Lawd. He knows Nik was responsible. Why is this a storyline?

Spencer says Jason and Carly getting married is the happy ending they deserve, they'll be perfect together and Sonny would've approved.

Lawd, he's been back on the show for five minutes and is already on Jarly prop duty. Then the Cam/Joss and Jason/Carly comparison. Lordy. Why does everyone have to prop them like crazy? They're not even a real couple! This is so dumb. LOL at Carly being amused that Joss pushed Spencer into the pool again but also being afraid of getting sued.

I zoned out during the Jordan/Stella scenes. I kind of want Stella and Gladys to become friends. Imagine them going around PC being busy bodies together.

Brook Kerr/Portia is an underrated gem on this show.

So is Rebecca Budig coming back or what?

    • There are no dumb questions here, we've all known each other long enough to fill in information without shaming each other.  We want you to be happy @carolineg.  Your POV as one of the few women here is vital. So, please, I hope you never feel as if any question, idea, or opinion is ever silly or stupid.  Your daily reminders about the realities of manicure and menstrual management has become a part of the personality of this thread. As for Hank, while I'm confident there's a plan in place.  It is frustrating that they announce these casting so far in advance that it is tough as an audience and wait it out until the thing happens.  I'm happy they didn't blow it the second Mike was in town, a week after meeting Liam. So, it is a slow burn.
    • I think his full name is Chadwick.  I remember, back when the previous actor was playing him, someone called him Chadwick a couple of times.  It may have been Stefano.
    • I didn't like those two sleeping together, but I suuure liked seeing BF in them. Wiggle and all. Just sad about the waxing of the chest.   Same.
    • It’s strange. I wonder if the writers at that time had worked with him somewhere else and had a relationship? That time is murky AF to find info on. Rachel Ames in effect left the show at one point in the early 80’s and she is credited like she was there until JFP. Tristan Rogers also took various contract breaks that were not short, and websites also credit him one long stint from 1981-1992. So many people come and go in short succession in 1982-part of 1983. I know they lost a lot of viewers when Genie left, but the show somehow survived yearly at number one through like sheer force of will.
    • In that way, at least we were fortunate.  The Daniel Pilon/Ron Raines decisions...not so much.
    • Letting Brennan put it in yet again while smirking over his shoulder... any day now! She's got him just where she wants him! I do think ol' Jack will be dead by February at the absolute latest. They have set him up as a counter-heavy to Sidwell, forcing poor Joss to work his next scheme or threatening to have her sent down for treason. Once he croaks I still deeply fear we will be subject to Valentin and Carly, partners in crime to lovers, possibly out to find out 'who killed Jack'. Anna was at her best keeping Sonny at arm's length and often somewhat cold, which she only really did (for better or worse) off and on during Carlivati's tenure. But Finola gradually got too emotional over Sonny, Jason, etc. and was allowed to do that onscreen too much long ago. Mulcahey brought some of that steel back, though Finola still managed to choke or quietly sob through some of that material as Anna found her way there lol. She's a brilliant actress and she did a good job with that stuff in '24, but now we're back to the same old and it humiliates the character whether she knows it or not.
    • Listen, I am all for Laura Wright wearing silly wigs and glasses if there was a point.  So far she's just been nice to Brennan and made out with him.  How evil lol!!  Even though I have been told Brennan loves her the writing was never there.  It's so low stakes.  Carly should maybe talk to her daughter and have an adult conversation instead. Laura and Anna look foolish.  I really don't have an issue with either being friendly or at least having some affection for Sonny.  I don't get both of them wanting to have a parade to announce how much they love him and how valuable the friendship is.  C'mon, Laura basically tolerated Sonny because of Luke until Lulu/Dante got together.  Anna likes Sonny because Robin did?  There really isn't much more of a reason for Anna to give him the time of day besides that.  They aren't lifelong buddies.
    • It is so dumb and is dragging on already after a couple weeks. By the time Carly wraps this up Joss will be running the local branch office. And yes, Laura deserves better. It's like they tripled down on this Sonny apologia stuff with her and Anna after the Mulcahey saga.
