What are some of the longest running Soap rivalries??

Lucy had an affair with Bobbie’s husband Jake and got pregnant (Bobbie cannot have children).  There was a miscarriage, and Lucy had started working for Tony as a nanny to BJ (Tony’s wife had died shortly before).  BJ was named in honor of Bobbie, and she and Lucy often argued about her manipulations of Tony.  Once they were married, she hated that Tony still kind of got a kick out of Lucy’s antics.  They had a couple of cat fights as I recall.

Then came Damian Smith- Lucy and Damian made a bet that he could not come between them, and sleep with Bobbie.  His prize if he did was to sleep with Lucy.  She picked them because she thought there was no way.  Well she did.  And they had an affair, and Tony found them kissing in the GH stairwell when their daughter BJ was brought in to the hospital after a bus accident.  Which lead to Maxie receiving BJ’s heart.

In recent times there was some stuff with Scotty.

So Jake, Tony, Damian and Scotty are all men they shared.  Plus Bobbie and Alan almost had an affair so they could have both slept with him too very easily.

And just a little before the affair with Jake, we have Lucy being the mistress of Bobbie's psycho son-in-law, Kevin. Lucy made claims that she was manipulated, was trying to live a decent life, etc., but Bobbie could read her like a book.

And just a little after Damian (where I am in the episode summaries right now), Lucy was briefly jealous of the idea that Bobbie could be attracted to Kevin. (He was the Jones' therapist when they weren't sure if their marriage would survive.) Lucy was also jealous of Felicia, too, who was between men in 1994.

Jill and Katherine feud lasted too long...from reading past history.it seemed like Bell semi ended it in 1980 with the two going separate ways..with occasionally interactions between 1980 and 1984.  It became pointless by the 90s..imho

Technically, Barnabas and Angelique from DARK SHADOWS win this because they hated each other for over 150 years.

I do think it's funny because rivalries absolutely do last decades in real life. I think the difference is on soaps, the characters interact with each other regularly whereas in real life, you probably wouldn't talk to someone you despise that often.

Even in RL some people can hold a pretty mean grudge.

I would say Jill/Katherine and yep Viki/Dorian would owe this thread.

And even though it has faded down wasn't Phyllis vs Cricket long running, even acknowledged with GT Phyllis during the Walnut Grove celebration.

ETA: @All My Shadows Lol I just said that, too.

And shame on me for forgetting Phyllis/Sharon OR Erica/Brooke.

Even as a kid watching it with my mom, I didn't understand why these two women who hated each other so much were constantly showing up at each other's home to talk! lol

My favorite though was one time when Esther told Katherine that Jill had just showed up at their house, and Kay said, "That's funny. I didn't hear her broom pull up."

    • That's an interesting point. I generally think of Long as taking inspiration from Tennesse Williams and other Southern writers.  The only one that comes close for CBS soaps may be Lucinda Walsh or Sally Spectra, and maybe those grotesque later years of Stephanie Forrester where she kept beating people up and attacking them with canes.
    • @alwaysAMCKim Zimmer is also not very reliable when it comes to dates and facts about the show. If you go in what that in mind, it'll be ok. She get things wrong. She was so angry at Ellen Wheeler that the anger comes off the page. She blamed Wheeler for decisions that John Conboy had made. She also thinks Paul Rauch was the show's best producer. As @P.J.points out, Zimmer's acting range far surpasses Lucci's, but it still felt that the writers just kept Reva the same mental age for the rest of the series. Long loved the whole damaged Southern belle routine.  Zimmer was still doing the red dress thing although to her credit she was not doing a whole storyline about joining a showgirls troupe the way Lucci did in her late fifties/early sixties (I'm too lazy to do the googling and the math).  I believe Zimmer is immensely talented but Reva was never a character that I rewatch much if at all. When I go back and watch GL clips, it's rarely any clips related to Reva. I will rewatch Michelle Forbes's storylines and work for example, but if Zimmer is in some of it, I almost always FF.  I just don't care about Reva during these storylines. I'm on Sonni's side even though I know how it turns out. While GL was on, I found the repetitive nature of Reva's storylines annoying even when I didn't watch the show and just read summaries. I think Zimmer deserved better material; I think of her tapes when she won her third Emmy. Stellar work but then it was right back to Josh/Reva. I think of her work on Designing Women, and how she could hit different notes and was so effective.
    • Just some clarification: David Hasselhoff was hubby #2! Per Google, she was married to another man in October 1981 and divorced him in 1982. So, Michael E. Knight was hubby #3. Here I thought Vincent Irizarry was still married. Shrug. Maybe he dated Hickland in between her marriages to MEK and hubby #4, Todd Fisher? (Yes, brother to Carrie and son of Debbie Reynolds...)

Vincent Irizarry throws in a quick mention that he was dating Catherine Hickland when he first heard about Marj.  I wonder when this was..? She was married to David Hasselhoff for a good bit of the 80's. And then MEK for most of the 90's. Fun fact... David Hasselhoff played Michael Knight on Knight Rider. Then she married an actor named the same as her first husband's character.
    • I agree with a lot of what has been mentioned before me. I think BTG desperately needs another family.  Character ages still throw me. There have been several times where I still think Martin is Vernon and Anita's child and then a character says something and I'm like oh right. It doesn't help that he hardly socializes with his parents or Kat. I do not care about the secondary characters... Ashley, Derek, Vanessa, Doug, Pamela, Joey, Jan, Mona, the gym dude can all go and I wouldn't care. The exception being Shanice. There is a decent hospital set and police station set but most characters have other jobs. They could have easily had characters interact at work and make it seem organic. Instead they had Derek showing up at someone's work let alone a police officer to talk about his quarrel with Ashley. Also, falling into the trap of having stories that soaps no longer have the budget for. That fashion show was tragic and so was the award gala. The potential trial between Naomi and Bill being dropped was probably due to lack of a courtroom set. However, how soapy would it have been if Bill had a heart attack at the trial and Naomi feeling guilty. It would have also been a way to easily redeem the character of Bill to Naomi but also Dani and Chelsea who would face what losing him would ultimately mean.
    • Not too upset with Martin and Bradley being married. It's a first for daytime, so I love that BTG came out of the gate breaking barriers. I hope that the show plays on their past in the most soapiest ways. This doesn't have to be Martin's first marriage. What if Bradley's parents were some real grifters or con artists? Does he have siblings?      I agree with/ @Cheap21    Kat gives me a smart businesswoman.  With everything she is currently dealing with I can see her becoming a shark in the boardroom. So I'm looking forward to that business storyline.
    • That's what happened with Hope Williams Brady on DAYS.  Started as rich princess, went to the police academy.   Became a cop.  Now consults for the I.S.A.
    • I know Curlee/Demorest tried to give Roger a conscience in regard to raping Holly, and Zas is magnificent in those scenes with Alex. But he kinda ends up blaming Adam and the fact he (well, really the writers) ignores raping Rita and being responsible for her and Ed's child's death make it less than convincing.  I do think during 89-93 they were careful to not whitewash his past with Holly, but his occasional bouts of conscience always seemed to be overridden by his obsession/lust for her. The only purely good thing I can ever recall him doing is helping Maureen during the blackout, and even then, had she lived, he would've found a way to call that favor in. I've kinda resisted saying it, but it's kind of clear to me Long was determined to have her own version of Erica Kane, and God help us all, it ended up as Reva Shayne. Although at least Kim could act. (Sorry LaLucci fans) Honestly, I'm not even sure CBS soaps ever a character as larger than life as Reva.
    • Regardless, I'd still like to see more episodes from the 80s...there is very little of Charlotte Greer, Kirklands and Greenberg's out there sadly.
