I think what the Dobsons did on ATWT after they left GL might hold a few clues as to where the Alan/Hope story would have gone, mainly in the James/Barbara/Margo storyline. There are quite a few parallels to the Alan/Hope story. Barbara and James even fall in love on an island (I don't think they were marooned, though). People forget now, but adult Barbara started out as a naive ingenue, much like Hope when they brought her back in 1979.
There are two main possibilities for where Alan and Hope's relationship could have gone: they could have married like Barbara and James did, and she soon realizes he's controlling cheating bastard who makes her life miserable. Ross is a possibility as someone she might turn to (not wanting to hear her father to say, "I told you so.") Ross, who was very ambitious when he came on the show, might not be totally disinterested. Maybe he has his eye on Hope's divorce settlement. (Marland did something like that with Andy Norris courting Hope while she was still married and pregnant). Maybe he realizes he truly loves her but Hope is burned by Alan and doesn't trust him, etc.
The other possiblity is a bit how James and Margo's relationship went: she finds out he lied about his involvement with Roger and decides to prove it and bring him down. Teaming up perhaps with Ross. I don't see Hope becoming a cop like Margo did, but it would definitely have toughened her up and made her less of a simp, like both Barbara and Margo once they were done with James.
In both scenarios they could have introduced a new love interest, like they did with Barbara (only, DEAR GOD, no past lives storyline, PLEASE).
Of course, there's no Stenbeck heir shenanigans in any of this (maybe Phillip's paternity would figure into this somehow), but I think something along these lines would have made a lot more sense than Hope staying a forgiving idiot the entire time she was married to Alan.
