Yes, it's the characters!
I've followed or watched this show since Aremid, so I'm aware it's generally more bad than good when it comes to story. I mean, I can get through the 'excitement' of a civil lawsuit over the death of a character that'll probably be undone anyway.
What I haven't really felt as much as now-- the characters are the problem. Last time I felt that way was when they promoted Shawn/Belle/Phillip and made them all kind of bland. At the time, though, I was also bitter because I felt like I had to lose Carrie, Mike, Austin for them, so it was my problem as much as a character one.
But now, it's kind of absurd that it's built around a gay caricature, retro added children of core/old characters, and a handful of people who were already announced to be leaving. Oh, and Lexie, who's neither Lexie in spirit nor actor.
Who am I supposed to care about, for real? Marlena and the chess set? Julie getting a date?
If they'd go all in with those, maybe. But they feel like background noise.
I think they really messed up their foundation, or maybe the casting. Or maybe just the timing of news about who's leaving.
I don't even know how they'd fix it, since they're fully filming, what, 2027?
