I sometimes take for granted just how much Holland-Dozier-Holland had to overcome to become such a touchstone of American music. I also take for granted at times just how much their songs resonated for generations, through nostalgia, or covers, or popping up as soundtracks on many romcoms or period pieces. These days, music tends to feel so derivative, and at times, choking on self-important misery. The lifeblood that Motown gave to this country made many stars, and made a magnate out of Berry Gordy, but Lamont Dozier will never fully get the credit he deserved.

I love so many of their songs, far too many to list, but this may be my very favorite, with the soul of Motown, always there to remind us of the heartache underneath the glitzy costumes and flawless choreography.
