GH April 2020 Discussion

GH is in the best place but a lot of the actual focus remains wrong, for me. But I agree Oct-Jan was pretty good and enjoyable. It's definitely slowed down and I see some of the same things returning. But it's still the one I watch every day. I'm still slogging through DAYS. And I gave up on Y&R and B&B.

When I watch RH as Franco, I have the same issues as when he played Paul.  Roger, like Tony Geary, needs a character with more layers for all his showy performances to have a point and place to go.  Franco, as married to Liz with kids just is not it, worried about plumbing is not it.

Roger Howarth with a boring character is not worth the contract.

Todd, for all his faults, was in stories that suited the actor under both incarnations.  He had a personality and relationships to play with against his personality.

Franco lacks a personality.  He lacks a purpose.  He lacks a direction to go in.  Liz is also kind of lost in this dynamic.  Something has to change here if he is going to remain on the show.

Jordan went to Internal Affairs and the DOJ and told them about Taggert and their partners falsifying evidence to send Cyrus to prison and he was released. And because of that he let TJ go. Offscreen, Cyrus had his men drop TJ off at GH.

And that’s the problem with GH. Characters go in and out of jail like crazy, and in the course of a year, it seems like everyone in town has been jailed. Worse? Characters get out for ridiculous, bogus reasons.

Molly with Brandon? Sorry, no way would he be into her. Just doesn’t work, especially with her lack of maturity and that annoying, grating whine of a voice.

That's the problem I have with both HP and LA - they look like children. Molly opens her mouth and sounds like a 16 year old valley girl. I don't understand how I'm supposed to care about this new development with her and Brando when GH can't even be bothered to put her on contract and write for her. It came out of nowhere.

And I swear they were setting things up for Brando and Carly.

I feel like it was just a plot point and nothing more. They won't end up as a couple. But I have to admit I did not expect it and I like when the soaps get a little unpredictable.

I was one of them lol

It would've been great. After all the secrets come out, Lucas goes to bar to drown his sorrows, runs into Brando and they hook up. Brando could have easily been bi and still could have gotten involved with Carly.

I could totally have bought that happening considering what Brad had done. With Molly, I just don't buy it at all. Besides it was her own fault anyway.

It was a week late this year due to the Impeachment pre-emptions earlier in the year but (in spoiler tags just in case you haven't seen it)

Is every new episode going to have extensive flashbacks to stretch out the content? It was so poorly edited.

And I guess since Chloe Lanier can't figure out if she wants to stay or go, we're getting ready for the Nelle redemption tour. Her crying about wanting Carly to remember her as a little sister seems odd since she came to town and had a kid with Michael. We're supposed to feel sorry for her that she wanted Carly to stick around? Also, I'm aware this is a soap and we're supposed to forget about ages and dates but it's like they didn't even bother to go over character history. That was definitely not a young Carly Eden was playing.

    • Kelly was a horribly-written character overall. Just think, two Emmy-winning actresses (including Cynthia Watros, Nina, GH, and Annie, GL) couldn't make it work. Pamela is campy, but so are Dani, Vanessa, Leslie, and Joey. And, I don't want to be too judgy because my love for camp changes depending on the show. OLTL, DAYS, and some eras of GH had me rolling with the camp. However, Passions was overkill and I hated it. And, here, I can take it or leave it. It's ok in small doses (note to RC). I see this show as more of a serious drama.
    • I think one of the reasons that pilot didn't get picked up was because Vicki L was associated more with being Thelma Harper and playing older then she was playing her own age.  It was a blessing it didn't get picked up, or we would have been deprived of the syndicated era of Mama's Family.   Also, worth noting a Pre Night Court Marsha Warfield and pre Perfect Strangers Rebecca Arthur in the cast.  All talented women, but stuck with a bad script. And the other pilot had a pre Fran Fine.. Fran Drescher as the best friend.  I think that pilot might have been picked up if Karen Valentine and Fran Drescher switched roles.
    • So, on rewatch....did Rick and Mindy never have sex?
    • Cady had a fairly posh accent or manner as Rosanna - the character was a 180 from Dixie when she went to ATWT, and it was a huge success initially. As someone mostly only familiar with the nagging, miserable or clueless Dixie of the mid-late '90s and early 2000s it was what convinced me Cady could act. I thought she was incredible in her first run. Later, in future stints, her hair and story and performances were all over the place but a lot of that was down to the show for me. She brought some of Rosanna back with her to Dixie in her ill-fated return and a lot of people didn't like it, which I understood but I did think the character needed some change. I think she's had a little bit of the same persona and arch performance in every role she's played since, including Jennifer Horton at DAYS or Kelly at Y&R, who later became a maniac and was easily the worst work I've ever seen Cady do. It has kind of infected her overall mannerisms, I'll allow that, but I do think she brought Dixie back together as herself while still evolving the character when she returned to AMC again in 2012-13. Nonetheless, for me the upshot is that this is a character where Cady's kookier recent performance style suits the role. But I can understand it grating for people.
    • Yeah, Loretta Swit's passing stings. My late dad LOVED the show (he died last November) and watched it religiously. In first run and repeats.  And I was literally born the day after the show's premiere, so I grew up with it! I know many loved later, softer Margaret, but I loved Early Hot Lips. In real life, I'm all for less misogyny, but to me, the early years of M*A*S*H were just funnier. May Loretta Swit rest in peace. Thanks for all the memories connected to my dad!

    • I agree that she isn't Dixie or Rosanna and shouldn't be acting like either. I just found it strange that she had a naive Southern character and a wealthy urbane character in the past and didn't experiment with accents before (unless I missed it, correct me if I'm wrong). She used to do improv characters on YouTube. She's probably doing something similar here.

    • And here I thought I'd never think about Lauren Tewes again after her brief appearance in Twin Peaks Season 3.
    • I may be the single person who does not mind Transatlantic Campy Pamela. I think it perfectly suits this sort of Absolutely Fabulous-esque supporting character she's playing much more than it did when Cady tried weird and often broad stuff at AMC* or Y&R, or later stints at ATWT. She's not Dixie and she's not trying to be. I will freely admit some of the other chances she took at other shows often came off stiff, hammy or downright mortifying (Kelly Andrews, come on down). (* - and I say that as one of the few who was somewhat into Cady trying to make Dixie more cosmopolitan in the Rosanna Cabot mold in mid-2000s AMC, just to liven the character up again)
    • There’s absolutely nothing exciting happening storyline wise but I’m always happy to see the vets on my screen so I’ll take what I can get. It’s also just nice to see them all dressed up in the same room, it always gives classic Y&R vibes. The best part? No Phyllis.
