Y&R to air classic episodes

Ugh. I still remember the breathless overhype over Billy and Chloe and the desperate attempts to push them. It made the subsequent backflips away from that pairing all the more amusing - pretty much the only entertaining thing in that storyline.

Could it be Katherine & Murphy's wedding from May 4th? She's in the May 5th episode, but it doesn't look like anything special. This is meh, but still earlier than either B&B or GH have gone. You'd think that for Katherine if anyone, they'd have more older stuff. I still have some hope they might do more 80s and 90s stuff with MTS and EB, since they're the same actors playing the part, and Katherine's best scenes from the 70s and 80s are mostly with Brenda Dickson or characters no longer on the show (though there is no excuse for not using more late 80s/early 90s material).

I believe Billy & Chloe were initially popular because they were the anti-Cane & Lily. MAB felt the need to “correct” Billy & Mac when she had the opportunity. However once the show began writing Chloe as the “victim” in her marriage and later on in the Chance/Chloe/Ronan/Heather quad from hell it was over for the character.

lol same here. But then I thought about it and I'll take anything still from 2004 over the last 10 years.

THIS. Interesting it seems they're, as of now, skipping 1998-2003, right? Which would be Alden's tenure ... maybe I'm reading into it too much, lol

Honestly, I loved Chloe and Billy. They were a pair that I was rooting for. At this point, regardless of storyline, I'd take them back or even Chloe with Adam. Not a fan of Billy/Victoria. Never was.

Same. I hate Billy/Victoria. I liked Chloe and Billy as well. On paper it made sense. Esther's daughter and Jill's son together should be driving years and years of story. Sigh.

I think some people just don't or didn't care for Billy Miller so they don't understand the interest in the couple, I guess.

Doug Davidson: Bill [Bell, Y&R’s co-creator, head writer, and senior executive producer] was a master at building to a climax like the honeymoon and from there it would break off into three or four different stories. Characters would go onto different rivers of their own. There wasn’t really a let down after a climax. It was like going to a different altitude.

PRECISELY. That was the beauty of Y&R, when one story was crescendo-ing another was just revving up and another was barely off the ground. It was magic.

For other themed weeks, it's be good to see Lauren & Sheila week (which could also be shown on B&B), Nikki & Victor week, Drucilla week (would never happen), and psyco week (featuring Matt Clark, Tricia, Sheila, Sean, Suzanne Lynch etc...)

Y&R remained uninterrupted here up until today. Hopefully this isn't a preview for tomorrow. State governors watching us look forward to the classics:

Miller was great on his first year on the show or so; once he was up for "intense contract negotiations" every fall he became an increasing lazy diva, at least on Y&R because his primetime gigs showed he could do much better. And the show catering to Heinle to fire David Tom? Notice she's never opened her mouth up since lol.

    • You're probably right. They may have just wanted edits of certain characters. Hopefully the rest is around.
    • Of course!

I'm wondering if there were bits cut from this footage, because to me it seems that may be the case. At 11:23, Laurie tells her psychiatrist that the bar phoned and told her Mark got into a fight and needs to be picked up. It starts to fade to the next scene, you hear some different music begin and get cut off between the static, and where you'd expect to see the aftermath of the fight, we cut back to a later scene of Laurie in bed worrying about what's happening. The credits at the end also show that more than Mark, Laurie and Dr. Northcote should have been in this episode. Another character, Brody, played by Ed Setrakian, is mentioned but not shown. If this is the case, perhaps the original fan who saved this episode has the additional scenes.
    • Anyway… It’s a shame that the video that depicted Leticia’s death was removed from YT.

    • Ms. Phelps holds a BFA in directing from Carnegie Mellon University, awarded in 1972. At a time when women were underrepresented in directing programs, she was one of the few women in her graduating class. To suggest that she possessed no further talents than completely changing the style of music used on soaps seems like a vast underestimate when one reads her online biography through an objective lens. I guess that I should be more clever than to constantly blame misogyny for these misguided interpretations of her management style.  But, I'll never comprehend why fans unquestionably align their opinions even years after fact. Post-modernism, and the ability to reinterpret context through the study of history, seems to elude this conversation.

    • This is 100% correct.  It was even on the nightly news where the US Government would not let the cast and crew travel to Egypt because it was deemed not safe.  The Achille Lauro hijacking took place on October 7, 1985, when the Italian ocean liner MS Achille Lauro was hijacked by four men representing the Palestine Liberation Front off the coast of Egypt, as she was sailing from Alexandria to Ashdod, Israel. The location shoot was probably scheduled to be filmed in mid-October to air throughout November with a two week tape to air date.  Remember on the show they did some in studio scenes doubling for Egypt before shifting the action to Arizona.  It was an awkward end to a truly bizarre storyline.

New episode from late 1973 or early 1974!
    • Coronation Street had a very good story where one of the characters befriended a man who she later learned had been involved in her husband's death - when told right it can be very powerful (not like AMC trying to make it a romance). ATWT almost had a big fire in mid-1994, so this seemed to be a "thing" with P&G at the time. I guess it fits the disaster backstage atmosphere.
    •   @jmgaw did not refer to Luke and Laura. Throughout 78 GH's ratings continued to rise as AW's fell. That turnaround was getting a lot of attention in the soap press with Scotty/Laura, Rick/Leslie/Monica etc . So the 90 min decision was a reaction to that. I guess the thinking was that 60 min expansion had worked so starting AW a half hour before might keep viewers from switching to GH at 3pm. I don't think anybody really thought it would work. The most sensible solution would have been to expand The Doctors and hope for a GH like turnaround, but for reasons unknown TD never went to an hour.
