Charlie Pierce nailed this years ago. The Republican Party fetishizes cruelty:

"We cheer for cruelty and say that we are asking for personal responsibility among those people who are not us, because the people who are not us do not deserve the same benefits of the political commonwealth that we have. In our politics, we have become masters of camouflage. We practice fiscal cruelty and call it an economy. We practice legal cruelty and call it justice. We practice environmental cruelty and call it opportunity. We practice vicarious cruelty and call it entertainment. We practice rhetorical cruelty and call it debate."

did NOT agree with his politics or how he handled things at times, but a true warrior. an american patriot who served a nation that always didn't serve him, and, rightly and wrongly, felt he did the best he  could. and now, he has gotten in the Fighter Jet, and strapped in to take one last flight Home.

Godspeed Sir, and Thank You.

R.I.P. to Senator John McCain.  Although I didn't agree with much of his politics and I won't forget that vote against recognition of a Martin Luther King Jr. national day, I do recognize his trying to undo a lot of the damaging rhetoric coming from his own political party, like when he tried to convince a hapless woman in that town hall to recognize Obama's humanity as well as his eligibility for the office of President of the United States.

Also, that very dramatic moment on the floor of Congress where he gave the thumbs down to the repeal of the ACA a.k.a. Obamacare was memorable.

I'm not fans of the McCains but I do empathize with just about anyone who has lost a loved one to such a dreadful disease.

There is a strange symmetry to the fact that Sen. McCain died 9 years to the day that Senator Ted Kennedy died of the same disease.  Has there been progress in the fight against these insidious diseases like cancer?

    • One of the dumbest situations (Lando) ever. What audience member is going to invest in a storyline with a recast they don't like and a triangle where one character is short-term? It bombed as it should have done. So much of JFP's tenure just reeks of desperation. I don't get how someone could produce SB (which did have flaws but was often brilliant) but make so many terrible mistakes at GL.   I still think JFP would have worked better as a director and music supervisor. Her music work at SB was top notch.

    • We see the same with GH, where Mark Teschner, the casting director, reportedly has less say since Frank Valentini took over. Some producers want to take over every aspect of their shows.  I think Lando may have been a CBS push.
    • No idea but she won Emmys & she was the Casting Director at the same time for both ATWT & GL. She hired Lisa Brown with no job for her. Then Marland made Brown his muse so he created both Iva & Nola for her. But, I think we know that Jill does what Jill wants.
    • I did notice a decline in the quality of the performers being cast once Betty R vacated/retired from her position. We would have been spared from the nightmares of some of the castings that dominated the show in the last decade or so of the soap. JFP was an example of someone, no matter the gender, who had no business being in the position they were in.
    • If Betty Rea was the casting director, why was so much of GL during JFP's reign cast by her? Walker, Deas, Crampton, Lando, etc. JFP takes credit for Dusay as well. What is the point of having a casting director, if you don't let her do her job? What happened when Rea left?
    • So much on here slips my mind but this is the first I remember hearing of Peterson's passing. Very sad. Nell was a thankless role, clearly set up for a cheating storyline with Frank, but Peterson did her best.  Betty Rea Rea was the casting director for the soap opera “Guiding Light” from 1970 to 1996 and simultaneously the casting director for “As the World Turns” from 1979 to 1983.
    • Sorry, just one more post on the Thorntons. How did Ruth and Edna feel about each other prior to Tad dating Dotty?
    • I can't remember exactly but I think it may be 1995 as Jake was trying to hide from a loan shark.
