@Wendy of course money was involved, my mistake, here's the amusingly poorly translated summary from the French SB site.  Mason was always a sucker for the promise of a consequent heritage from his father (lesson learned: always get the cash up front).

C.C. Capwell learns by chance the identity of the father of the child, he orders Mason to marry Victoria. To keep intact the couple of Eden and Cruz, he proposes a consequent heritage to Mason if he adopts by the same occasion the child and gives him the name of Capwell. What does Mason, who marries Victoria in a ceremony one cannot sober any more. Victoria is confined a little time later at the beach house with the help of Cruz, who is unaware at this time that he is the father of the baby that he helps to born. Mason takes immediately officially in charge the declaration of birth, not omitting to baptize the baby of his own choice C.C. Capwell III.

When did they find out about the true paternities of Chip and Samantha? That I don't remember.

I always thought it odd that both Chip and Adriana were blond and fair-skinned, with Cruz as their father. If SB was on the air now, no way would there not be a backlash.

There were a few reveals with Samantha. Victoria figured it out when Julia was still pregnant because of how Mason was acting towards her, CC found out when she was born because the hospital accidentally called him when Julia was in labor instead of Mason, and everyone else who didn’t know found out not too long after she was born after they located a kidnapped Mason.

With Chip, the truth came out when he was sick and they needed Cruz to be his donor. I found it a bit lackluster though since it was so long after he was born and Mason and Tori were long divorced and he hardly acted like a father towards Chip by that point.

UGH, Tori. Hated her. From beginning to end. All she really existed as was a foil. Maybe had the writers not made her a rapist (Cruz) and drug-addicted shrew and gave her a bit more of a backbone, I could have warmed to her. As it was, though, I did not miss Kristen Meadows once she left the show.

He he! I knew I could get people riled up with that post.

But I still liked Mason's Shakespeare

What's funny is that she ended up being the spoiler in her own love story! Was anyone expecting Mason/Julia to take off like that?

After what she did to Cruz, I never understood why he, Eden and all the rest were always so nice to her. I never bought it.

The producers didn’t expect Mason and Julia because they were stupid and blind. These are the same people who didn't jump on the chance to get Jed at the beginning and allowed Louise to leave.

Mason/Julia weren’t the plan but their baby contract scenes were a much more obvious build to a pairing for me than Mason and Tori were. I never bought the Tori/Mary comparison they were initially pushing and never got why Mason would have fallen for her. Of course, what little build they had died as soon as they actually got married which made it more baffling that they were the planned pairing.

By the time the marriage happened, there were too many Mason and Julia scenes and there was no going back from that. And yes, a lot of money was involved. Mason told CC that the baby could be his and CC offered a lot of money for Mason to marry her.

Uhm, because you've attempted to block out all things Torie?

Tori never bothered me as much as she bothered other fans, but I still didn't like her that much. Not because of Kristen Meadows' performances, but because the writing for the character was so thankless that no actress could have salvaged Tori.

But, as always, to each his/her own!

Who was played by Terry Lester, a.k.a. Mason Capwell #2. Funny how that works.

I'm not nearly as familiar with the later years of SB (post-1989) as I am with the earlier years. Was Lane the only Mason who dealt with the split personality?

Technically, yes. Although it was mentioned during Gordon Thomson's tenure and tied in to his proposing to Julia again. (Julia had Mason kidnapped to Las Vegas and some strange woman showed up to Mason's hotel room, claiming to have married Mason [when he was Sonny]. LONG story. Played for humor.)

    • It helps that Ben doesn't have a long history with John (they've barely interacted) + it plays into the stroke John had which led to him having outbursts. So it's not completely out of the realm that Ben would believe her and even think it was possible because of above factors.

    • I'm pretty sure Chris was present when Kay Chancellor kicked the Fosters out of her house, after Jill, thinking she'd inherited the house from Phillip, moved the whole whip-stitch tribe to Foothill Road.  Wasn't there a big scene where Kay waltzed in and tossed all of them out.    Kay Chancellor and Lorie Brooks had a couple of scenes in 1979.  It was a complicated storyline.  Kay was "dead", having been "killed" in a fire at the sanitarium.  In reality, Kay had survived of course and was staying in the Foster home with Liz.  For several weeks, Liz was the only person who knew Kay was still alive; they had Kay's funeral and everything.  Jill was married to Stuart Brooks and was trying to bilk a divorce settlement from him.  Stuart was anxious to get rid of Jill and was willing to pay a premium to get her butt out of his house.  Brock had revealed to Lorie that, in his opinion, Jill was planning to extort a settlement from Stuart and then run away with Derek Thurston, profiting financially first from Stuart and then secondly from Derek.  Not knowing Derek Thurston, Lorie wasn't sure if this account was valid or not, but she HATED Jill and wanted to be sure Jill got $0 settlement from Mr. Brooks.  Liz babbled to Kay that Stuart was in the process of writing Jill a check for $150,000 to get rid of her .  Kay Chancellor, knowing how Lorie felt about Jill, called Lorie on the phone and said, "Lorie, this is Kay Chancellor.  No, I'm not dead.  Everyone just THINKS I am.  Now, lissssen to me, Lorie. Take the check that your father has written to Jill and rip it to shreds.  Tell Jill to just GO.  She's already made plans to swindle a fortune from my husband.  But I'll stop that as well, and she will get nothing.  Ab-so-lute-ly nothing."  Lorie snatched the check away from Jill and ripped it up.  Jill left Stuart's house with nothing at all, and then Kay herself interrupted Jill's next foray -- a wedding to Derek.  Kay and Lorie were pleased that they'd stymied both of Jill's get-rich-quick schemes.  I don't recall Jennifer Brooks ever interacting with Kay.  It would've been superfluous, as they were the same prototype character -- the vain, wealthy, society matron who depended upon male companionship for validation of their fading beauty.  I expect Bill Bell thought it would be wise to keep them separated, as Kay was simply a more flamboyant version of Jennifer.
    • She was always fun when she appeared on Larry King Live dishing about old Hollywood. She was a good friend of Dame Joan Collins, who posted this tribute. 96 is quite a fabulous run.
