So I just read that basically NBC was trying to rebuild its daytime, because after Santa Barbara was cancelled that slot was left empty? And basically Sunset Beach was a failure and it got replaced with..  Passions. Wow, can't believe Passions stayed on the air as long as it did. But, I guess, some of it was just so bad, that it was good?

Right. I meant that by 1997 NBC was trying to add another soap to its lineup. The death of soaps wasn't evident just yet in that era.  I think the other 2 networks still had 4 soaps each and NBC just 2?

Upon further research just now, it seems like NBC gave Passions a go-ahead before it even canceled Sunset Beach. , I always thought that the former replaced the latter. Passions premiered in July of 1999, and Sunset Beach wasn't canceled until September.

Oh, yeah, I completely forgot that Another World was still on at that moment

In fact, you could make the argument that Passions had more of an SB influence with the pairing of Luis (Galen Gering) and Sheridan (McKenzie Westmore). He was from a lower-class Latino background - and a cop. Sheridan was the blond scion of the wealthiest family in town.

Of course, A Martinez and Galen Gering later went on to play father and son on DAYS.

I realized a small fun fact Sherilyn Wolter (Elena) played Taylor in B&B and Lane Davies played Ridge both for a short time with the right timing from siblings they could've played lovers!

Lane playing Ridge made me realize the scripts on B&B are pretty inferior to SB

It's no secret that I sometimes disliked the way storylines played out. Hated that they let Augusta leave! And I think the Perkins should have been recast and kept. I also didn't care for the way the Brick storyline played out.

That said, it is a very good show. The writing and acting are wonderful. There are many great aspects. Jed Allan and Nicholas Coster are so awesome together. The show goes from humor to ripping your heart out in a second. And they eventually chose actors who could do drama and comedy.

And it has some seriously HOT chemistry and couples.

I just got to the climax of the Mary Duvall story. Julia announces to Augusta that she's taking Mark as a clent. And Augusta is disgusted that she would take him because Mary would never lie about that.

Watching the scene ramps up my admiration of Louise Sorel. I'm so proud of her for refusing to do the Dash storyline they wanted. She's right, there is NO WAY that Augusta would not be 1000% on Julia's side.

Julia and Augusta were having breakfast when Mark tracked down Julia to hire her. Augusta overheard, and let Julia have it. Then after Julia heard Mary's side, Julia and Augusta had lunch. Julia told Augusta she planned to throw the trial for Mary.

Another thing I'm noticing is that Gina Gallego is doing a good job with the material she's being given. My problem is that I'm just so DONE with the Santana character that no one could salvage her.  No one.

And I love that Keith has a cat.

Lex, I think wanting to watch a quality show that you enjoyed is perfectly normal.

Longing for your banana clip is nostalgia.

Longing to wear shoulder pads under lace sleeves is an insanity that we need to prevent happening ever again.

I agree with this. She and the entire Andrade family should have been more prominent. And Santana's addiction story is actually being played quite well. But as I've said, I'm over her by this point and no longer care. She's been too heartless for too long for me to care.

    • As someone who was watching OLTL at the time, Dano did excellent work, but the writing was weird. Dano even got Emmy nominated for what she did. However, it did feel that the writers did not know what to do with her, but to be fair, it did feel like a lot of that was that the character was a network mandate and the writers were making it up as they were going on. I didn't watch Dano's trek around all the soaps. That kind of thing would have worked better with an ABC performer not someone who had been off OLTL for decades. I can't imagine AW without Felicia Gallant. I really don't want to because she provided so much joy for me when there was so much disappointment on that show. The only time I thought her character didn't work was the John/Felicia storyline but it got Anna Holbrook an Emmy so I can't complain all that much. It's just another example of drama at the expense of character.
    • Bringing this over from the soccer/soaps ratings thread yesterday:  Errol said: "CBS put out a notice that it could preempt at a moment's notice as the Pope selection continues, dependent on how long it takes, of course." New pope just chosen, name to be announced soon. Yeah CBS-NewYork channel 2 is airing Pope coverage instead of Y&R right now.
    • @brisbydog - I like that you have a signature font, très chic Abe and Paulina's new apartment was the first thing I noticed.  I don't understand why people over a certain age in Salem automatically move into a condo? When it seems just as simple to make the set seem like a detached home.  But, I will give points to attention to detail of choosing colors that compliment the Black actors in the scene. Which then led to the second thing I noticed.  Why would EJ want Kayla's office, when his is 3xs the size?  Also, even if he buys the hospital, won't Kayla get to keep her office? Lastly, can we at least give Cat the agency to decide on her own with whom she wishes to date?  Do men actually need to negotiate on her behalf?  She's stunning.  My advice would be if Chad is friend-zoning her after a year together, move on to his richer brother.
    • OH!!! I love it. I can't believe I missed that. In one of the 2 fan events held the 2 years after the sorry end of our lovely show, both  Anna Stuart & Stephen Schnetzer attended & I got to talk to each of them. Obviously I was in heaven. Although at least I didn't do my shy star struck thing.
    • We probably won't get any of our CBS soaps today cause of the Pope stuff, cause you know they have to air it on regular network despite having 24/7 news channels

    • I still don't know when/how did Iris find out about Evan's connection to Janice?
    • lol Cass and Donna went on a bowling date!
    • As well as insulting our host, being rude to some of the nicest members who correct you, and having an inflated sense of duty. While others may be able to add numerous offenses, the egocentrism to force any conversation off-topic to focus on you is the most egregious act for me.  This is light entertainment, an interactive discussion, not the shallotpeel-hour.
    • Yes, that is why. I mean, not last minute but it was not what Shapiro originally wanted. First, she tried to buy the show. Then she tried to buy the character. Meanwhile several other companies also tried to buy the show.
    • I thought I had stopped & then I saw this post from you. To be clear I said I was wrong. I have not made an attempt at any backpedaling. There is literally no place to back pedal to. I did 3 things. I deleted. i apologized. I said I was wrong, egregiously so.
