Susan Hufford Passes Away, Became Advocate and Trustee for The ALS Association

After Emmy Award-Winning Husband Developed Lou Gehrig’s Disease

NEW YORK CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Susan Hufford, who joined The ALS Association in the fight against ALS shortly after her husband, internationally-known Emmy Award-winning television and film star Michael Zaslow was diagnosed with the disease, and was very active with the national organization, passed away on Tuesday from cancer.

A member of The ALS Association’s National Board of Trustees and the Greater New York Chapter’s Board of Directors, Hufford had been busy in the past year promoting "Not That Man Anymore: A Message from Michael," the book she had written about her late husband.

Hufford and Zaslow marched to the steps of the nation’s Capitol during The Association’s National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference as an advocate to raise awareness about ALS. She also was a major ALS fundraiser, producing Broadway benefits.

Hufford formed and was the president of Michael Zaslow’s ZazAngels to raise awareness and funds for ALS research.

“She was committed to the fight against ALS and to keeping her husband’s memory alive,” said Allen L. Finkelstein, chairman of The Association’s National Board of Trustees. “This comes as quite a shock to the ALS community. She had given so much of herself and had so much more to give. She is irreplaceable and will be missed by so many people.”

Hufford said of her husband: “One of greatest performances was the year he battled ALS in real life and on ABC’s `One Life to Live,' increasing public awareness of the disease to a new level.”

Hufford authored more than 20 books and also was a practicing psychotherapist with a private clinical practice in Manhattan. Before making a career change, she was a television actress.

“Susan’s book was about love and hope, which was how she lived her life,” said Gary A. Leo, president and CEO of The Association. “Her star will always shine brightly.”

A funeral service will be held for Hufford at 1:15 p.m. tomorrow at the Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street (corner of Amsterdam Avenue) in New York City. The family has requested that donations be made to ZazAngels, c/o The ALS Association’s Greater New York Chapter, 116 John Street, New York, New York 10038.

That is so sad. My heart goes out to their daughters. IIRC, their daughters were young when Michael died so they have to be in their late teens or early twenties by now. Far too young to have lost both your parents. :(

One of Michael's daughters died last year. I can't remember from what, but I remember hearing about it.

I believe Helena died in a car accident. I think she was just 19.

That's tragic. I know she was such a champion for the ALS cause.

The comparisons in my mind to Christopher Reeve and his wife just seem so weird. I thought instantly of that when I read this.

How sad for the family. They were all such strong fighters for a good cause.
