Radio Soap Opera Discussion
Pretty Kitty Kelly was an adventure story running from 1937 through 1940 One of the newest and most charming heroines of the air waves is Kitty Kelly, who has "landed in New York" via Frank Dahm's vivid script story, "Pretty Kitty Kelly." The tale of the beautiful Irish girl is heard five mornings a week, Monday through Friday, at 8:30 a. m., over WOW. Kitty Kelly, played by lovely Arline Blackburn, is involved in many an exciting situation as her dramatic story unfolds. Among the adventures and romantic interludes which she encounters are a mysterious murder ... a handsome young man who loves her ... contact with the underworld characters in a great city ... a jewel robbery. The tense situations are brought about mainly because Kitty, upon landing in New York, is stricken with amnesia. Her loss of memory, coupled with her exploitation by gangsters and an English solicitor and countess, make this new story extremely interesting. Who is Kitty Kelly? How will she disentangle herself from the web that is being spun around her? Only the script author knows -and he's not telling! Frank Dahm, the author of this delightful serial, says that "Pretty Kitty Kelly" was born of a "chance inspiration." Chance, a trip to New York and an Irish mother -in -law were the ingredients which started this mystery melodrama on its course. You see, up until a few months ago, Mr. Dahm lived in or near Chicago. New York was just a name to him. Then he decided to visit the big city and find out what all the shouting was about. The writer was dazzled, and out of that bewilderment Kitty Kelly was born. Upon his return to Chicago, he went to tea with his Irish mother -in- law. Their discussion brought out facts about the Irish people . . . their temperament, habits and very considerable and inimitable charm. Something happened in Dahm's head. His young and lovely heroine . . . the one who was to see New York for the first time and marvel at its many wonders . . . would be an Irish girl just over from the old country. Yes, he had it! And now you hear it over WOW.

Accent Work on Soaps: The Good, The Bad, and The Godawful
On Y&R, I was always amused by Jacques(?) the maitre de at the Colonnade Room. He didn't have much to say but the few lines he did have were delivered in a cliched/fake French accent. I think Hugh McPhillips was the actor but there may have been others. How was Elaine Princi as Miranda on ATWT?

Remember a while back Billy and lily had that talk about racism etc that came out of nowhere and disappeared just as fast. And only Lily gets to be in relationships with white men. Devon was teased with Abby and Mariah but married Hilary. Neil was with Victoria but married Sophia, Karen, Hilary etc Abby was matched with Nate but they broke up for no real reason. Abby marries Chance, Nate is matched with Elena/Amanda. Jack hooked up with Kerry- she was written out. That's just off the top of my head.

It's really funny when Nina jokes about Phillip calling Katie for a date, cause he actually did end up dating Chloe and Nina hated that. Meanwhile Abby won't be born for almost another 10 years but now they're all kind of the same age! Yes and Victoria was already married when Billy was born. Just about everyone is now in the same age group. I wish they had kept the SORASING more consistent so that there were more delineated age groupings.

I didn't realize that it wasn't until 75 the Janice/Leslie burst into song but this news item verifies it. As the Tube Turns: Janice Lynde will be unveiling her vocal talents on the Feb. 24 installment of CBS's "The Young and Restless" singing a love song during a scene in which she marries her fiance, Brad (as played by Tom Hallick). Janice, best known to viewers of the show as the prudish Leslie Brooks, has been working for months with voice coach composer Phil Moore in preparation for her big day .

Well I don't find Grossman particularly attractive. It's a matter of personal taste. As for Traci giving advice, I think it's a conceit that you have to go along with as a soap viewer. There is not one character who is in a position to give out advice. It was like Alice Horton doling out wisdom, when her children were adulterers, rapists, mentally unstable etc.

Precisely. They need to pull back on the business side of things if they don't intend to present anything near to realism.

Think back to Lorie/Lance/Leslie/Lucas and the years they got out of that. If say, Nate and Amanda had been a little less 'nice and understanding' without becoming psycho villians, the twists and turns of this foursome would be way more interesting. A few little lies and self serving actions wouldn't go astray...and an interfering parent for Elena or Amanda couldn't hurt- but there is no budget or interest in older characters.

August 1967 Daytime series role 'Liz' Confuses Pamela Toll ANY DAY SHE Is not working, she can be seen lunching la a corner of Sardi's. She is such a regular in the restaurant that she has become "engaged to be engaged" to Peter Gina, Vincent Sardi's nephew. "I came here originally because it's interesting and I was in show business, and it was convenient to mv auditions." "She has stayed to make friends, be seen by people wondered about the pretty thing thing in the corner and find her future happiness. She is Pamela Toll, win be 19 this moat, and Is a veteran of 11 years In show business. Currently she is playing the role of Dr. Liz Wilson in the NBC-TV daytime series The Doctors. And she's a bit confused. "Liz has changed character so many, times, she doesn't know who she is. She started as a kook, then became a manic depressive, then she got normal, then she got a mad crush on her boss. We have been playing It that way for several weeks now, with looks and inflections. Suddenly, the director came to us and said something about a catastrophe. Seems the writer told him we have been all wrong. And now we have to undo those looks. How do you undo two months' work?"

Which soap won't survive by 2025?
Days sets must be minute if Y&R appears to have space! Covid has obviously affected budget (cost of regular cleaning etc) and production (number of extras, sets etc) so Y&R eg is looking threadbare compared to only a few years ago. So long as they produce some kind of profit they will continue for now. If to do so, the budget keeps getting cut it will surely reach the point that they cannot be feasible any more. Also, the shows need to stop writing like its 1985. Get rid of the big corporations( with no offices and employees) mega wealthy citizens (who live in one room homes or tiny hotel'suites') and fancy restaurants (with no patrons) and pivot to a more realistic narrative.

Y&R March 2021 Discussion Thread
Was it Mal Young that wrote Hillary off? They had to make a choice as to what to do. Hilary could have mysteriously left town (which then and now would have been the best choice). Wasn't there some guy she was meeting with around that time? But Mal thought there was more drama in killing her off and making Lily responsible. Perhaps a punishment for her deciding to move on. Judging by some of Mal's other stories nothing would surprise me. TPTB went along with it but obviously the fact that Mishael came back means there were people that realized her worth to the show. Mal was gone by then and different voices could be heard.

Thanks for posting that. Summer of 81 and the beginning of the story that had Travis and Liza on the QE 2. Didn't know Tucker Smallwood was still on as Bobby that late. Search always had good production values but the stories were lacking. Zach and Sylvie were short term and the whole story had no long term repercussions. Wish there had have been credits.

The Brighter Day
A short recap of what was happening around Oct 1960. This was when the show moved to Hollywood and story and cast changes reflected that. The Brighter Day, Dramatic Series, Begins New Season As The Brighter Day enters another year on KFDM-TV Channel this fall, its interwoven dramas take new direction that promise continued absorbing viewing in the coming year. With the Reverend Richard Dennis established as Chaplain of Westmore College and settled in Columbus with his daughter Babby and Aunt Emily, his position as spiritual mentor to young people offers great rewards as well as constant challenge. The greatest challenge facing him currently also represents a paradox as daughter Babby remains very much attached to Peter Nino, an unsavory young man whose gambling has already led to more serious transgressions and has involved college students in scandal. In spite of painful scenes between father and daughter and his attempts at guidance, the coming months will see Bobby cleave to Nino although her unhappiness increases. Nino's unregenerate attitude, now strengthened by a desire to avenge Babby's misery, threatens unexpected difficulties for Richard. A major development this season will be the arrival of Grayling Dennis. Richard's son, and his wife. Sandra, to settle down in Columbus. A childless couple now in their mid-thirties. Grayling and Sandra have adopted a 14-year-old girl and in the midst of their efforts to help her through normal adolescent upheaval, her real mother appears to claim her. The girl's conflict, the mother's machinations, and the court battle for custody that becomes inevitable deeply involve the Reverend Dennis as the multi- facited drama unfolds. Blair Davies and Mona Burns continue as Richard Dennis and Aunt Emily, respectively, with Nancy Malone as Bobby and James Noble as Grayling. The Brighter Day is a CBS Television Network Production with Leonard Blair as Producer.

Primetime Soaps
November 1976 Women Given Break In 'Executive Suite By John N. Goudas NEW YORK (KFS) - "Executive Suite," 'CBS' glossy prime-time soap opera, hasn't really caught on with the viewers as yet, but it is building. It's the type of show that might sneak Into the hit status if it gets the chance to stay on the air. The women's movement should be pleased that "Executive Suite" has more parts for actresses than any other TV series of recent memory, and one of the most beautiful and talented members of the fine cast is Sharon Acker, who plays the harried Helen Walling, wife and mother. Ms. Acker's lovely face should immediately conjure up one of TV's prestigious series from the recent past, "The Senator," in which she co-starred (again as a wife) with Hal Holbrook. She describes her association with the short-lived but still-remember "Senator" as a happy and unhappy time. Happy because it was her first starring part in a TV series and unhappy because she was let go in an attempt to refurbish the series which won awards but didn't rack up the high ratings. "I wasn't informed that they were considering minimizing my part, It just began to happen and finally I approached the powers behind the show about it, and they left me no choice but to leave before I was reduced to a voice over the phone," the actress said. The whole thing is academic now since that was some years back, but you could still catch a fleeting flash of pain in Ms. Acker's eyes when she recalls the affair. Of course, there's no chance of that happening to Sharon In "Executive Suite" since she figures Importantly In the plot lines.. However, there are so many plot lines running simultaneously in the series, based on the popular 1954 movie, that Sharon and the rest of the company have to make their moments on screen count. Just before the series was scheduled to go into production, Sharon got together with her TV family, husband (Mitchell Ryan), son (Leigh McCloskey), and daughter (Wendy Phillips) and the quartet of conscientious and caring actors worked to create the feeling of being a family. The obvious immersion and real joy she displays when she talks about acting keeps the subject fascinating even to the most inexperienced layman. Even though Sharon Acker could pass for 30 years old, she's the mother of four teen-age daughters in private life.

MTV: RuPaul's Drag Race
This season is starting to drag for me. The awful Rusical and the backtrack on dumping Kandy. Snatch Game, apart from Gotmik as Paris was a disaster. Why on Earth are they picking social media personalities that nobody has heard of and have no comedic value? As for Tina as Richard Simmons and Eliot as Rue ...lord make it stop. I've noticed that the judges always praise another (unworthy) performer -in this case Denali as Jonathan Van Ness. Symone just did her usual schtick. The runway was dull. No surprise that Elliot left. Final 4 - Gotmik, Symone,Rose and ? I'd hate to think it would be Kandy.
