Would these rather creepy drawings entice you to devote 1 hr each morning to 2 new soaps?

Look into the past - 1975
Yes, the 'I'm blind and will be a burden so I'll be noble and lie' was something out of a 1930's radio soap and didn't work in 1976. Bill should have been more inventive in finding away to create a wedge b/w Brad and Leslie.

Re Tim Brown on Bright Promise. An NBC press release has him appearing as Harold the week of Nov 24-38 1969. So he may have reappeared in March 1970?

"The Conners" Discussion Thread
Anyone else finding the recent episodes a little lacklustre? I was trying to figure out why and then realized that they are not taping before an audience? There has been no voiceover announcement indicating that recently. If that's the case it may explain why the timing off jokes seems a little off as they are probably so used to responding to audience reaction. Is it the case that they would do the show twice and edit the best scenes together? Also the storylines are getting a little bleak with Becky back on the booze, Darlene's friend and Ben's dad dying, COVID and them constantly facing financial ruin. Maybe just some fun light stuff to balance it out?

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
If only Corday (or someone) had prioritized the Hortons over the years. Characters like David Banning,Steve Olsen and Sandy Horton had years of story potential and could have acted out stories given to others over the years. I understand that certain characters were offscreen for various reasons but they could have been kept alive in viewers minds by some quick referencing eg in say 1983 Marie gets word Jessica is pregnant and the birth is acknowledged. Tom and Alice could say they visited and Nick Fallon is established from birth. An ornament is added that Xmas. And so on. Establish the next generation instead of them turning up randomly. RE SSH and Deidre. Susan was always such a stylish lady but a some point seem to settle into frumpyish old lady mode with the flowing tops, chunky necklaces, tipped easy care hair do and comfy sandals. Mind you DH is now channeling her inner lesbos with the tartan shirts and pleather jackets. But she certainly presents younger than Susan.

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
if they did want to go with the twin angle, it would have made more sense for Sam to impersonate Marlena around town in parts where she wasn't well known with a view to setting up Marlena to be discredited or embarassed in some way. Samantha could say she was leaving town and get some LA buddy to verify that but sneak back into Salem and be seen up to no good. Maybe Marlena had a vulnerable patient who Sam could manipulate to be her partner in crime. Later on after Sam's death they could have introduced a new character who was Sam's daughter-maybe vengeful at first but then becoming a surrogate daughter to her aunt Marlena.

Racism and racial representation on soaps
Bill Bell was enthused about this story but he seemed to lose interest and it never came to much. Luan was a passive character who was really brought on as a plot device, only to die a noble death. Keemo was the angry young man but never went much beyond that. I wasn't particularly enamored of either performer but the writing didn't help. I can see why PB didn't like the story as Jack seemed to turn into Cliff Warner and I don't think he wanted an adult son at that stage either. I don't think there were any racist overtones on his part ? Nonetheless Keemo was part of Jack's history and should definitely have returned. SFT had deaf characters in the 70's and Tom Sullivan, blind actor in the 80's.

MTV: RuPaul's Drag Race
Agree that this season is fizzling. Part of that is the familiarity of the format - the challenges where it appears in rehearsal that the whole thing is going to bomb due to a queens inabilty to learn lines/dance steps/carry atune etc- but then it all comes together, The talk to's - 'I didn't come this far to go home now/I deserve a place in the finals/I love these girls but I'll do what I have to win this challenge etc Also COVID restrictions have played apart. This weeks episode was tedious. The song 'Lucky' was awful.I couldn't understand the queen's lyrics and the presentation was basic. We knew they'd all go through. The lipsynch was just to make sure Got/Rose could be crowned and not have people say they never lip synched. Gotmik for the win-not only the most stylish/creative but also funny and seems a nice person. And the trans aspect won't hurt. Kandy is too messy and sloppy. Symone not confident enough. Rose too polished and professional - no spark there.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Have been scrolling through a site with random old Australian TV listings and discovered that ATWT aired in primetime in Sydney on Ch 7 in 1974! It's from Thursday Nov 28th at 8.30pm, This is the blurb... Carol returns home and asks Tom to give up Natalie Bannon's case. Grant and Joyce have a showdown and Grant decides not to divorce her until she has fully recovered. So it seems not to far behind the US storylines. Quite frankly I'm surprised that Oz execs would take to a daytime soap that had been running for nearly 20 years and expect viewers to be interested. Meanwhile the same channel was airing DOOL, Y&R and GH during the day. The Melbourne listings for the same evening do not have ATWT in the schedule, in fact the entire schedule was different. So it looks like ATWT was Sydney only exclusive. Wonder if it was nightly and how long it lasted?

"Secret Storm" memories.
Thanks So Jada was first off in 58. I have a feeling Jada chose to leave as a person of that age might want to do. She was back on 60/61 until Amy and Paul were dropped in 67. At this point she went ATWT to play Susan Stewart. I think she continued in that role until Storm wanted her back in 68. At the end of that contract she chose to leave again and then I think either she approached Storm to come back as Amy in 73 or they asked her to come back to boost the ratings as they faced cancellation. If anyone knows more about her comings and goings, please let me (us) know. Here's an amusing article from 71. A Soapless Soap Opera Star By JOY DAANE Dear Valerie Hill Ames Northcote; For about seven years I've been watching you on Secret Storm. I remember when you first arrived in Woodbridge as Mrs. Hill, a widow. Then you married Peter Ames and after he died, you became Mrs. Ian Northcote. Anyway, it just occurred to me that in all that time I've never seen you scrub a floor, wash a dish or dust the piano. By now you must have enough fuzzies under your bed to grow geraniums. For that matter, I've never seen you lolling around the house with your hair in curlers or sitting around without your girdle, watching TV. How come? Is it because you've learned that when your doorbell rings, it is NOT going to be a magazine salesman? And when the phone rings, it's NOT going to be somebody asking you to bring a cake to a PTA meeting? It's going to be someone like the police, who called a while back to notify you that your stepdaughter, Amy, was seriously injured in an automobile accident in which Amy's friend, Mickey, was killed because he had forgotten to put snow tires on the car. As I recall, Amy was pursuing Corey (who was eloping with Deedee) to tell him he wasn't her long lost brother after all so it was O.K. for them to be in love with each other. Since all you were doing was sashaying around the house in your Chanel suit and diamond earrings, you were ready to dash off to the hospital immediately to sit with Amy until she regained consciousness. And last month when word came that Alan Dunbar (former husband of another stepdaughter, Susan) was not dead and had just been released from a concentration camp in Red China, you didn't have to change your dress or fix your hair. You were ready to begin meddling instantly. Possibly another reason you don't do housework is that you're so busy mixing drinks. I've noticed that whenever somebody drops in with a problem which is like constantly you begin passing the drinks around. For instance, Frank Carver, whom Susan married when she thought Alan was dead instead of imprisoned, stopped in when Susan went to visit Alan in a West Coast hospital. Frank was frantic. He couldn't get in touch with Susan at her hotel because he wasn't aware she had registered under her previous name Mrs. Alan Dunbar, instead of her current name Mrs. Frank Carver. The reason she did that was because she thought Alan might telephone and the psychiatrist said she mustn't give Alan the bad news of her remarriage because he was suffering from malnutrition and drug withdrawal. So Frank stopped in to consult you, as does everybody else in Woodbridge, and you said, as you do to everybody, "Let me fix you a drink, dear, and we can talk about it." Which you did . . . for four days. I've been giving the whole thing a lot of thought lately and have decided that your charm lies in the fact that because of the multitude of fascinating crises you face, you have no time for ordinary activities. That appeals to us household drudges who are too busy cleaning the stove for hanky panky. I think I've figured out how you manage to stay on top of things. During the commercials the doll with the sponge mop comes in and does your floors with that foamy stuff that cleans, waxes, polishes and disinfects all at once. And with the time she saves, she rinses out the highball glasses.

I agree Bitter is not a good look for DD. But as the longest running cast member he has been treated poorly. Paul could easily be a part of the Rey/Adam/Sharon story for example. Dead weight like Kevin and Michael still get to show up, so why not Paul?

Young Doctor Malone
Thursday April 25 1963 Melbourne Australia 1.05 pm Channel 7 Final episode of YDM. So it seems it had a short run on Oz TV. I wonder if they started from the first episode, otr the series began there at some point during the run. Maybe that was the case and viewers were confused by being dropped into the midst of things...

Another World Discussion Thread
Although Doug Marland isn't really associated with AW, it was the springboard for his career as a headwriter. May 1975 An Emmy For Native Of West Sand Lake By JOHN DINARDO "It's mind-boggling, I still haven't come down," said Douglas Marland. And he had good reason. On Thursday, the West Sand Lake native walked away with an Emmy Award, "Best Writing For A Daytime Series" for his work on the popular NBC daytime drama Another World. Marland, who now lives in New York City, joined the staff of Another World about five months ago when the show changed its programming from 30 minutes to a full hour. "To be honest, I thought we bad no chance at all," he said. "We were up against some pretty good shows and I thought the change to 130 minules would hurt. It made it all the more exciting when we won." Marland attended Troy H i g h School a n d l a t e r graduated from Averill Park High School before enrolling in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. A suecesful acting career followed. He appeared in several soap operas including The Doctors and As The World Turns as well as two m a j o r f i l m s before started writing seriously. Last year his first novel, "Counterfeit Agent," was published. Marland has also written scripts for two made- for-television movies. Both are currently under option. Marland frequently visits the area. His mother, Mrs. Lee K. Messner, still lives in West Sand Lake, and Marland plans to build a home on the family property there. Mrs. Messner watched the Emmy show on television. The show took place aboard a Manhattan excursion boat cruising the Hudson River of all places. How did she feel when her son won the coveted award? "It's hard to descibe," she said. "I was excited, just very pleased."

The Doctors Discussion Thread
"Why did we switch to a five episode format?" echoed Jerry Layton when I finally caught up with him in the carpeted viewing room where he was glued to a TV screen watching the dress rehearsal via closed circuit. "Well, we realized this 'Eight Hours ' for Emily' was too good to condense, then other stories of the same value came along and we changed our pace." He sounded like a happy man as he went on, "Now we can get below the surface of the characters and into their motivation in the five-day treatment. Important to us, too, is that now we can develop secondary and tertiary relationships among the regular characters in the back ground running story." That might be a bit of PR spin as the ratings had not been good and as stated, a brand new story everyday would be a huge undertaking. The switch to 5 episode stories came about in August 63 and continued until the show become a fully fledged serial in March 64.

Scrolling through some old Australian TV listings from 1966 and there is Morning Star. I have read that Young Dr Malone screened on Aussie TV in the early 60's but apart so Morning Star becomes the second US daytime soap to get a run in Australia.
