  1. To be fair, the person assigned that task also had to sweep the studio floor, supervise the car park and write a weeks worth of scripts...
  2. SOD ran a blind item around that time that a;luded to a show planning to bring back a popular character only to find that the actress was now considerably larger. It seemed to be referring to Lilibet Stern, but when this was mentioned here in the past, other posters claimed there has been other stories published around that time that she was working in nursing and had not gained weight.
  3. So, we have the 'Patty just vanished and had mental health issues' plus 'Carl just vanished and has been missing for years' as well as 'Eve did not go crazy and try to murder Victor' Any other missteps from the past? The thing is, they were written for no reason. Carl had been offscreen for sometime but Mary's role had diminished also so as a viewer it was possible to accept that Carl and Mary's lives were continuing offscreen. Why not bring Carl back and show some friction in their marriage. It would be believable that Carl might have crossed paths with Ruth and become attracted to a woman less rigid and judgmental than Mary. Chris spots them in an out of town locale and the story takes off from there. Way more believable and relatable than the tired old amnesia story. Why not play the Patty story as happened onscreen? She simply left town for a fresh start. That would leave the story open to all possibilities. Patty could return with plans to get revenge on Jack, or still vulnerable to his advances. Make a fresh play for Danny etc
  4. I think I read recently (in SOD?) that John McCook plans to stay at B&B for as long as they'll have him. So no retirement plan.
  5. Why bother with Cricket not knowing about Patty? Surely it would be just as easy (and acceptable) for her to say that Paul never talks much about her. As much as Bill is praised, had those stories come about in the internet age, there would have been a lot of blowback. As a viewer at the time, I was annoyed by these retcons. We've talked about it before, but it seems odd that Bell would initiate this story without having the role of Patty cast.

  10. Totally agree that a lot of vet characters have been victim to poor character development and are crowding the canvas but realistically we are not going to see Eric Braeden or Amelia Heinle disappearing anytime soon. Phyllis is one of several characters that have limited story possibilities with the show in its current state and when MS departed a few years back,I think they should have rested the character until her return. Gina Tognoni would have had the chance to portray a new character who could have invigorated some of the other vet characters. So Phyllis return would have had more impact. We all have our likes and dislikes re actors/characters/stories. That's why we can have interesting discussions...

  12. At this point, Phyllis is PLAYED OUT, especially with the shoddy writing in the last few years. After over 25 years of airtime, there's really nothing left for her, especially as she is a scheming type of character. She's married and boinked every guy in town and only has her vapid daughter as family. Phyllis could easily have left town years ago. I admit I've never been a fan of the character or actress and she is not alone as being in the played out category, but I feel she is expendable.
  13. In hindsight, Bill could have given Leslie and Brad a happy ending and written them both off (considering Tom Hallick departed a little later also) Then have Lorie go full steam with Lance.Vanessa and later Lucas. If he wanted, a recast Leslie could have returned (divorced/widowed) and been tossed into that story.Or maybe, Janice might have agreed to return. If it was a recast it might have been more palatable to have some distance between Lynde's portrayal and the new Leslie. Considering that they were dealing with a new Snapper and a new Greg, just dropping Les for a while could have been a good move.
  14. In 1938, Irna Phillips decided to wrap up her still successful 'Today's Children' and replace it with 'Woman in White' "WOMAN IN WHITE" MAKES ITS BOW AS "TODAY'S CHILDREN" BIDS FAREWELL -.MONDAY Friends of `Today's Children,' for over five and a half years you have been like neighbors to my family and to friends of my family. You have seen these `Today's Children' work out their problems, one by one, problems that sometimes were difficult. But somehow, in some way, these children of mine now seem to be on the right path. They are happy and content, they are grown up and able to face their own problems." With these exact words, "Today's Children's" "Mother Moran" asks a long and faithful audience to listen to "Woman in White." Listeners who tune in "Today's Children" Monday will hear the characters of that serial in their final broadcast, as they become members of the great audience "out there." Following the click of a sound -effects radio - switch, engineers will plug into another studio, introducing "Woman in White," a new daily script show by the same author, Irna Phillips. Everyone who listens and works behind the scenes in radio will wonder why "Today's Children" is being taken off the air when it enjoys top popularity rating among daytime serial programs. The simple, homey words of "Mother Moran" are the answer. The new serial, "Woman in White," which dramatizes the gripping story of a young graduate nurse, "Karen Adams," will serve a real human need, as "Today's Children,' has filled an important broadcasting spot for five years. Playing the title role of "Karen Adams" in "Woman in White," will be talented Actress Luise Barclay; "Betty Adams," a sister of "Karen" and herself a student nurse, will be portrayed by youthful Antonia Gillman; "John Adams," a brother, will be played by Willard Farnum; "Dr. Lee Markham" will be acted by Macdonald Carey, and "Alice Day," nurse, will be portrayed by Ruth Bailey. As the curtain rises on "Woman in White" Monday, tuners -in will hear "Karen Adams" giving her oath and pledge of service at a ceremony being held at a hospital for graduate nurses. Listeners will sympathize with Nurse Adams as she cares for her first case, they'll cheer her service of self as she nurses a middle-aged woman, defeated in her suicide attempt, back to health and adjusts her attitude toward life. Presenting a series of actual cases from which the author bases her script material, "Woman in White" writes finis to Miss Phillips' career as an actress -for she played two important roles in "Today's Children." It also marks the first time in radio that an author and sponsor have invented this novel and effective means of signing off one successful venture to inaugurate a new one. Listeners will have the opportunity of being the critics in this rather revolutionary move.
  15. Thanks! Is Kate Linder headed the way of Doug Davidson?
  16. Thanks for posting that. Yikes, I remember Salvage 1. It seems an odd show for Andy Griffith to be involved with but it seems he really wanted to be back with a weekly series. I think he had another flop 'The Yeagers[ around this time also. It took him a few years to get a hit with Matlock. So what happened with Trish Stewart? Even though Salvage 1 bombed, it would have got her name out there. Joel Higgins fresh off the soaps also, went on to more success. Of course, it was easier for him as most series were built around men. Did Trish actively pursue more work or quickly decide to give up? A few years later she came back yo Y&R, much heavier. Had she been ill or no longer cared trying to be Hollywood slim. So many questions...

  20. Jack and Jamie Ewing - bland characters played by bland actors. This would have been the time to introduce JR's illegitimate son. It would be totally believable that JR had a child. Maybe by Serena(?) one of his go to ladies of the night. That story could have gone so many ways.

  23. The Paley Center Archives has a screen test of Brenda and the following actors, so obviously an audition for the role of Brad. Baker, David L. Cheyne, Hank Diamont, Don Eckholdt, Steven Kayser, Allan J. Wilson, Robert Also a 1974 TV Guide profiles the actors of the NBC series 'Chase'. One of them, Craig Gardener talks about having a semi regular role on Y&R. I suspect this might be Jill's boyfriend who was mentioned in a 1973 synopsis posted way back. I can't recall the character's name offhand.
  24. This goes back to my earlier past of Lucy marrying a businessman, rather than a doctor to keep her character more integral. She could either connive along with him to get JR or be used by him to achieve that aim.
