Young & Restless - June 2021 Episode Counts
Thanks for posting, Tara at #1 really? I'm all for using vets but Jack is that highup only because he was constantly wandering into Crimson Lights and Society and Chancellor Park putting in his 2cents worth over Kyle and Summer whereas Victor and Nikki didn't have one scene discussing their grandaughter. Meanwhile Nate languishes with 4 eps. Sean Dominic is the sexiest man on the show. They should be pursuing Nate/Imani for a start. Why bring on Moses and give him 1 ep? The balance is way off...

The casting of Rosemary Prinz put paid to Amy lasting longer initially, but I think she should have returned at some point. Maybe Amy could have returned played by Kathleen Noone when the show went to an hour and played some of those stories. Was Amy ever mentioned in the 70's after the first 6 months? Seems odd she never returned to see her family...

YES! The only story with any momentum is the Kyle/Tara saga. This is a classic soap story but Josh is not playing all the necessary beats and characters are being twisted to fit the plot. Summer is being made to look an idiot when by going along with Tara's threats instead of exposing her. If Tara had been a little more subtle then Summer wouldn't have the ammo to go to Kyle/Jack/Phyllis etc Everyone else just plays scenes that may or may not have any long term consequences. The costuming is atrocious for some of the women. Nikki is put in overly tight dresses that do not flatter, Lauren looks like a hooker, Tara in pale plain silky fabrics that wash her out, Nina in that hideous green dress etc The lighting is harsh and the set decoration super cheap.Every time I see that clunky sofa in the Chancellor living room I cringe. I could go on...

Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Delaware News Journal Oct 1981 'Guiding Light' actress is fired Kristin Vigard, Morgan on "Guiding Light," has been fired. Vigard, who had been a personal favorite of the show's head writer Doug Marland, was late to the studio one time too many. Jennifer Cooke is her replacement and will be on screen shortly. As for Marland, he says, "When Kristin was good she was very, very good, and when she was bad she was awful. John Wesley Shipp (who plays Morgan's husband Kelly) had far too many scenes with Kristin when he might as well have been playing alone. An actor can't do a love scene by himself, although John always did an excellent job. As for Jennifer, she's a beautiful girl and she'll be a wonderful Morgan." Marland, who is off to the Canary Islands to shoot some location footage for "Guiding Light" revolving around Mike and Alan, says there's no truth to the rumor that he's about to split from the soap opera: Soap notes "I have worked on a plot for a cable soap opera which is being marketed, but it has nothing to do with 'Guiding Light.' GL's my first love and I'm not going anywhere."

Y&R Actors Out?
I would imagine both King and Mealor had to make the decision whether to stay another 3 years or make the break. Probably they were offered little financial inducement to stay. At their age they are probably at their most marketable right now and with so many shows being produced network and otherwise, they probably feel it's worth moving on. I think CBS/Sony are totally money driven and know the show will survive without them. I think that may be a factor in not casting Chance also. At this point the savings on a contract salary might help to mitigate the expenses incurred on COVID related measures.

ALL: Proposed Soaps Over The Years
July 72 ABC has an idea for juicing up daytime TV Special by Screen Gems, Cramer to test new formats to reach females and add diversity to time dominated by soap operas and game shows. A new concept that could bring more diversity to daytime viewing gets a trial on ABC -TV this month. It stems from Honeymoon Suite, a 90 minute special being produced by Screen Gems and the Douglas S. Cramer Co., Hollywood, targeted for daytime TV and the female audience. The taped special, to be presented under the umbrella title, "The ABC Afternoon Playbreak," is a development on two fronts: as a pilot for concept: as an on -air pilot for a regular daytime series. If the concept of doing a special program in the afternoon time periods on a pre -emptive basis is successful, ABC - TV may elect to do a regular 90- minute monthly or even weekly special appealing to women viewers. If Honeymoon Suite is successful as a comedy idea -the show contains a series of vignettes about various couples who, at various times, occupy the honeymoon suite of an elegant hotel -it could go as a first -run daily half - hour comedy series. Michael D. Eisner, vice president, daytime programming for ABC -TV, explained: "We anticipated about a year and a half ago that we'd be at parity at some point with the other networks. It happened sooner than we thought. And when it does happen you don't just stand there and watch. When you do that you start falling back again. This is a way of trying new forms, putting some interest into daytime, trying to create some excitement, something to promote and advertise." Honeymoon Suite, which stars Henry Gibson and Rose Marie (presumably they would be cast regulars if the show is turned into a series) and features such guest performers as Gloria DeHaven, Arthur O'Connell, Martha Scott and June Lockhart, is scheduled for pres- entation on July 26. The network, anticipating that viewers of serials would be antagonistic towards a pre -emptive show, has elected instead to program the special from 1:30 to 3 p.m. EDT, replacing three game shows: Let's Make a Deal, Newlywed Game and Dating Game "We're going to be selling this show tremendously with a lot of promotion and advertising" promises Mr. Eisner. The network also is committed to back a second 90- minute taped "ABC Afternoon Playbreak," probably to be presented in late August. Entitled Courtroom One: Mother vs. Mother, it concerns a father and son who practice law in a small California town where the courtroom is ruled by a woman judge. Produced as well by Douglas S. Cramer Co. in association with Screen Gems, this special also could be spun off into a daily half - hour dramatic series. Impetus for the programs, according to Mr. Eisner, is ABC -TV's success in producing the 90- minute filmed nighttime Movie of the Week series. But the "Afternoon Playbreak" shows are being produced on budgets of less than $150,000, or about a fourth of the money allocated to Movie of the Week. A number of other projects are being developed as possible daytime specials, with a third Doug Cramer show, The Haunted, among them. Neither Honeymoon Suite nor Court- room: One is being developed as an an- thology. Instead a serial concept is built into the shows. According to Mr. Cramer, Honeymoon Suite stories would run anywhere from one to four days, while Courtroom: One stories would sustain from three days to three weeks. "Honeymoon Suite would become the biggest user of writing and performing talent since NBC's Matinee Theater, points out Mr. Cramer. "We'd use 150 different stories a year, the equivalent of eight nighttime half- hours." Mr. Eisner, though, soft -pedals the notion that any of the daytime specials is immediately translated into a regular series. "I doubt if we will go to five days a week for a while," he says, "but we might go to a special once a week." He emphasized, though, that the network is not committed to actually producing beyond the first two special programs. Still, he indicates that a lot is riding un the outcome of these initial shows. "We're hopeful that we are able to break the mold of game shows, service shows and serials in the daytime," he says. "We're hoping that drama can come back to daytime television."

Hunter King's contact should be up as she returned in June 2018 so perhaps she is in negotiations or she requested a break before returning. Does the fact that Nikki and Victor are due to head to Milan have any bearing on Summer moving to Milan also? Just saw the ep where Nate and Elena were getting it on...how can this happen when other characters are not allowed to touch?

Not understanding the story choices with Summer. Is this the same little blitch that blackmailed Kyle into marriage and banged Billy on a bet? OK. she could have matured since then but hardly to the point of having Tara run roughshod over her. Besides she has several sociopaths on call-Phyllis/Victor - who she could press into action to obliterate the competition. If for whatever reason they needed Summer out, they could have used her innate selfishness as a means of accomplishing this by her not being pleased about Tara/Harrison's inroads onto her 'perfect' life and needing some time away.

Ratings from the 80's
July 86 At ABC, the daytime vice president, Jozie Emmerich, is taking steps to beef up 11 a.m.- noon, which has been plagued with low ratings and poor clearances. She confirmed last week that the network, pleased with the results of a two week trial run of the new Fame, Fortune & Romance, (11 -11:30 a.m.), has committed to 65 episodes (13 weeks) of the program. It will debut on Sept. 8, with repeats of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous continuing in the slot until then. Fame, Fortune & Romance is being produced by the TeleRep unit, Television Program Enterprises (concept by Al Masini, who also created Lifestyles), will look similar to Lifestyles and will feature the same host, Robin Leach. The difference, Emmerich, is that Lifestyles sticks pretty much to "possession and travel" themes, while Fame will also explore personal relationships. In its two week run last month, Fame was averaging a little more than a 3 rating, said Emmerich. In the second quarter, Lifestyles averaged a 2.4, which was an improvement over the 1.7 that Hot Streak had been averaging in that slot in the first quarter. ABC earlier announced that a new game show would debut at 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 18. Double Talk will replace New Love American Style, which was third from the bottom in the second quarter with a 2.3/10. Double Talk is a word game from Bob Stewart Productions, creator of $25,000 Pyramid on CBS. Emmerich reported that other game show pilots being considered along with Double Talk will be kept in reserve as possible replacement shows. They include Comedy Club, from Lin Bolen, Bamboozle from Chuck Barris and Catch Phrase from Marty Pasetta. Other game shows in "early development" said Emmerich, are A Question of Scruples from Columbia, based on the board game, and Funny Business from Group W Productions. Despite the changes in the morning lineup, Emmerich said most of the effort in daytime has been devoted to "keeping our serials strong." That seems to be paying off for the network's three hour long soaps, General Hospital, All My Children and One Life to Live, all of which were in the top five for the second quarter. But the network has one half hour soap, Ryan's Hope, that placed in the bottom five. Part of Ryan's problem is poor clearances (usually in the low 80% range), since many stations air a noon to I2:30 p.m.newscast that is more profitable. Emmerich told affiliates at their annual gathering in May that "we really believe in the future of [Ryan's]. Disappointing ratings are no deterrent to our commitment." Last week she stressed that for the time being, the entire five program daytime serial block (the fifth show is the half -hour Loving, which airs after Ryan's at 12:30) was "inviolate." In the coming months, she said, an effort will be made on all the soaps to get "back to basics," and away from some of the "wild and woolly" storylines that have unfolded lately. "We really want to get back to the heart and core," she said, which means focusing on "love, romance and hope." In addition, she said, all the serials will bring back some characters that were popular but left.

Ratings from the 80's
July 1986 At NBC, the network's daytime ratings for the second quarter were the best in seven years. "Three years ago," said NBC vice president of programming, Brian Frons., "we were in fourth or fifth place," referring to when NBC was three rating points or more behind its two competitors. Now less than one rating point separates the three networks. But NBC has problems in daytime, including its loss of the rights to repeats of Family Ties which have been getting its schedule off to a fast start at 10 a.m. Ties goes into syndication in January and will leave NBC's daytime schedule then. In the second quarter, the program was tied in its time period with CBS's $25,000 Pyramid, with a 4.5/19. (The 10 -11 a.m. period is programed by ABC affiliates.) Frons said he is still considering what to do once Ties is gone. Among his choices are several game show pilots he revealed to the affiliates at their meeting last month, along with three others in earlier stages of development. But Frons also said he was exploring the use of another hit cornedy from the prime time lineup as a shortterm solution for 10 a.m. But that alternative, he noted, means that "sooner or later you have to replace it" when that show goes to syndication. If he can come up with a hit game show, said Frons, "we could be set for 10 years." NBC's serial block is in its best competitive position in years. Santa Barbara, only two years old and competing against two top 10 programs from 3 to 4 p.m., General Hospital and Guiding Light, grew almost 20% in rating and 16% in share in the second quarter. Days of Our Lives, (I -2 p.m.) is making a serious run at ABC's All My Children for first place in the time period, having beaten or tied its rival for the last five weeks. A real question mark among NBC's serials is Search for Tomorrow, the oldest soap on the air which celebrates its 35th anniversary later this year. Compared to a year ago. Search is off both in rating and share and is third in its time period (12:30-1 p.m.). Frons admits the program's situation is "dicey." But, he said, Search has rebounded from an 8 share last December when a new executive producer, David Lawrence, came on board, almost back to where it was a year ago-a 12 share. One of its problems is a clearance rate in the low 70% range. But Frons says he won't consider canceling the program unless "it dives to a 7 or 8 share and stays there." But the key to how things take shape in daytime in the coming months, suggested Frons, is the 2 -4 p.m. time period. That's where the biggest HUT (homes using television) levels in daytime appear. ABC dominates that period now, with General Hospital, which was up almost 7% in rating in the second quarter, and One Life to Live, which was up almost 12 %. The gains of NBC's Another World and Santa Barbara appeared to come at the expense of CBS's Capitol and Guiding Light. Another World (2 -3 p.m.) was up a tenth of a rating point, while Capitol (2:30 -3) was off three tenths of a point. Santa Barbara was up almost 20%, while Guiding Light was off 9% in the same 3 -4 time period. Sustaining the momentum, said Frons, is something NBC must do to remain competitive and close the gap further. "We can't stop. We must keep growing." What he comes up with to replace the popular Ties at the top of the schedule next January may be an important factor in NBC's future momentum.

November 1974 Rhoda (CBS -TV Monday 9:30 -10 p.m.), one of hit new shows of fall season, chalked up its biggest numbers so far when it went to 60 minutes Oct. 28 (preempting Maude at 9 -9:30) for show titled "Rhoda's Wedding." It hit 35.1 rating and 51 share, compared to 18.2 rating and 26 share for first hour of Pittsburgh- Atlanta football game on ABC and 18.1 rating and 26 share for first hour of Burt Reynolds movie, "Shamus," on NBC The producers wanted to hold back on Rhoda getting married but Fred Silverman wanted big numbers for the November sweeps - a 1hr wedding ep with the Mary Tyler Moore cast included.

As soon as I saw that it came back to me. What surprises me is that Aaron appeared as he could just as easily been a voice on the other end of the line or no voice at all with Lorie having a one way chat. Maybe there was more to the scene, perhaps Lorie didn't want to see Lucas and Aaron was more involved. At least Lorie had a doorman. Now people just turn up anywhere. Lucas was not alone. Snapper was also a fan of that type of dialogue. As were a few others. I think Bill liked that pyschological trippy LA type speak.

Over the years the numbers representing a ratings point changed a lot so a 16.1 in 1953 meant far fewer viewers than a smaller number years later.
