The fact that there are plants all over the world... Like when Lauren (for no reason) announced Fenmore's was opening in Japan and Sth Korea (when department stores are shutting down everywhere)Meanwhile she operates her business with no staff or office. Jabot should have been a boutique cosmetics firm, Fenmore's a small chain operating in the midwest, Newman an investment business with a few holdings. The characters could be wealthy but it would be believable that they would be based in GC and the businesses could be depicted somewhat realistically. And threats would seem real. But when its been established that the Newmans are multi billionaires...

The money they were paying Larry and then Patrick, along with escalating salary increases and production costs coupled with falling ratings meant they had to cut people to keep the show financially viable. There was not a lot to be earned in reruns (a gold mine for other shows) and international sales had tapered off. So I guess once contracts came up...

Re Hope recast. Hope was pretty much played out as a lead character (like many others) so if a recast is used to wrap up Hope's story she could either be written out or used as a recurring character.

The ratings info I have are from a variety of sources, but mostly Daytime TV which published monthly ratings from a few months prior to publication date. They don't detail whether the ratings they show are the monthly average or just the results from one particular week from that month. Nonetheless they give a good guide to how GH was fairing pre Monty/Monty and Marland and then Monty and PFS. By April 77 GH was not in top 10 soaps or top 15 daytime shows AMC, OLTL and RH all outrated GH. AW on NBC and All in the Family/Match Game on CBS were trouncing GH. ABC tried new writers to rev up GH. Nov 77 GH not in top 15 daytime shows ABC hires Doug Marland late 77 and then decides to expand to 60 min and hires Gloria Monty. Jan -Aug 78 GH #6 in soaps 7.2/25 #8 overall. AMC was #1 soap in that time. So over those months show makes a dramatic comeback. Nov 78 #7 7.1/25 Dec 78 #2 8.8/30 Jan 79 #2 9.7/29 Feb 79 #3 10.29 March 79 #5 8.0/27 April 79 #5 8.0/31 May 79 #6 7.9/26 June 79 #5 7.4/28 July 79 #4 9.0/32 Aug 79 #2 10.2/33 Sept 79 #2 8.5/30 Pat Falken Smith too over in August 79.

En So true, but within the confines of once a week for an hour for 30 or so eps a season they were limited in how far they could take the story away from the leads. That was a problem for all the primetime soaps. Agree, Cathy Podewell was great and made it work. Totally different character from Sue Ellen Part of that was that the writers had a limited view of the character. Lucy was the teen vamp in their eyes and never went beyond that which didn't fit as the character aged. I don't know why they married her to Mitch, a doctor? Their story was always islanded and treated as filler. Surely it would have made more sense for Lucy to hook up with a businessman involved in the oil business. That would keep her in the thick of things. Charlene and Larry had great chemistry. I guess they decided to go in a different direction as Barbara was irreplaceable but it was a bone headed move. I always wondered how Hope Lange would have worked as Ellie Giving JR a son was a smart move but several seasons too late. Having Sue Ellen move into the lingerie business was amusing but ultimately led nowhere. Again she should have been involved with something that kept her within the Ewing circle. Giving JR a son was a good move but several seasons too late.

I guess P&G and NBC both wanted AW to succeed, and at that point it was still struggling. Remember in those days P&G had a policy that none of its sponsored shows could compete with one another so there was no issue there. I think Agnes Nixon was writing both shows so that was another reason to do it. My questions regarding the crossover. Was Mike appearing on TGL before he arrived in Bay City? I think he had been offsreen on TGL after his marriage to Julie. Did he return to TGL for a while and then announce his move to AW or just turn up on AW and maybe a mention on TGL that Mike has taken up a new job...

Racism and racial representation on soaps
I posted this in the ATWT thread but I think it deserves a place here also. P Jay Sidney was the second actor to portray Dr Bellows on ATWT, The first was Brock Peters. He is quoted her from a TV Guide article titled ' What the Negro Wants From TV' 20th Jan 1968. Sidney left I believe, when he was not offered a contract. Irna Phillips was writing at this time. I previously read that she refused to write blacks into the series as servants/janitors etc. This is Sidney's take on his stint. Sidney sites his own experiences last spring when he was hired as a regular in an important supporting role on the popular daytime soap ATWT “I was supposed to be a research physician in that series,” he says, “and yet, emotionally and dramatically, I didn't exist as a person. My whole function in those 14 segments was getting a white boy out of jail. I was a non-person in the plot with no life of my own. I didn't have any problems. There were no things about which I was personally glad or sad, nothing to which I personally aspired. I had no past, no future , no family. I only existed for that white boy. I was, in other words an auxiliary, not a person.” His tone suddenly becomes vehement. “Hell”, he explodes, “life isn't just going to a laboratory everyday.”

Well, better than nothing. They desperately need more sets. Seeing Society and the Grizzly Pumpkin day after day is too much. I guess COVID is a part of the problem but the budget must have been severely slashed. Moses is cute but I hate the hair...

No way would a soap have gay siblings. Two gay characters to deal with who can't be involved with each other? Dealing with those issues you mentioned? Not happening.

I wouldn't think so. Even if asked I don't think Meg would be interested in going to a low rated NY based show. Was Meg writing for Y&R at this point? Meg was from a different era of the show. She portrayed Liza Walton Kaslo who seemed like a different character to Liza Sentell. Only Larry Haines remained of her family from her time on the show.

I guess there is a place for playfulness on the set, especially in the high pressure environment of live to tape soaps, but I wonder how much is too much? We've seen evidence of how performers would camp up their line readings in rehearsal to let off steam but were Coster's/Considine's 'pranks' during actual tapings? Hopefully not.

Mmmm...maybe Team Bev on this one. I recall how he and Considine were the practical jokers on the set. That can get a little tedious after a while, when you are supposed to be on board with somebody else's idea of fun.
