Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Thanks for sharing. I didn't realize until I saw that Secret Storm episode put up earlier this year that 4th of July celebrations were already airing on soaps at this time. I would love to see Papa Bauer's involvement, being a first-generation immigrant. A shame the show didn't keep Robin around to possibly be paired with Mike later on. I wish I could see those last days of Kathy too. Such a sad, sad life she had.

I don't know if I would have either, most of the time, but he was a beautiful man - stillness, yet with fire underneath. He was something of a comfort, and when you're young and watching a soap you need that. I didn't even know much about myself at that time, but I do remember that moment. Beyond Jerry, and Rick Hearst, I also remember finding David Bishins (Daniel St. John) cute.

I don't remember being drawn to any GL men when I watched in the day, other than knowing how pretty Rick Hearst was (and somehow still is), but I will say that I remember thinking Jerry ver Dorn was hot as hell during his blackout tryst with Blake. I was not surprised that Blake was never the same person after that night.

Thanks @Maxim Erika Slezak looks stunning there. I don't think Viki was dressed in such a stylish way very often - the character always wanted to be more low-key. Nice she got to get such a great evening gown and earrings this time. When you lay out the Leanne story it reminds me of how confused and seedy the whole thing was. The saving grace is or was Yasmine Bleeth's chemistry with Mark Brettschneider, but the rest I wish they had junked after Rauch left. And yes, Cain and Tina will remain floaters, albeit sometimes charming floaters.

ALL: Speculation on the Future of Successful Daytime Soap Operas
This is very true. It's also why I really wish we had more half hour or even fifteen-minute soaps where character work and quieter moments are key. (I know that isn't true for B&B, but B&B has always been its own creature)

When I saw some of the tweets and comments about how Michael was with Willow I was expecting him to have thrown her to the ground or something along those lines. I'm not a Michael devotee, but considering her actions, I thought he was restrained.

ARTICLE: ‘The Real Housewives Of Potomac’ Stars Wendy Osefo & Gizelle Bryant To Appear On ‘Beyond The Gates’
I wonder if they asked Candiace, who would be a perfect fit for soap drama, or if that can't happen now that she's off the show.

I think I said all this before, but from what I've seen, Ted LePlat was miscast - he lacked the charisma the part needed. It also seems somewhat fast-paced, how fast he moved into controlling and beating Katie and going on a blackmail spree. I'm reminded of when Marland had another version of this type of character on ATWT with Tad Channing, where I feel once again they miscast the part when they brought in Larry Pine. At least that was meant to be short-term, but I get the sense Andy was meant to be more, things just went wrong.

I never knew of the film until I saw some old cable promos on Youtube as I guess HBO must have run it for a while. A shame that Michael didn't get more. He deserved better roles. I think in the early '80s he plays a seedy Falcon Crest photographer trying to exploit one of the dullest characters ever on TV (Vicki Gioberti).

The mobsters have been at a low ebb on GH for a good while now...aside from Sonny, of course.

I wish any of that period of Roger was available as I think Roger's romance with Peggy was what was popular with viewers. He and Holly didn't seem to ever be a romantic couple until a brief period the early '90s. I can't remember if Michael left during the period he made You Light Up My Life.

ALL: Speculation on the Future of Successful Daytime Soap Operas
Those days have been gone for a very long time. The last may have been the coming out stories for Bianca on AMC and Luke on ATWT. There are moments now that seem daring, but in any sane country, wouldn't, like BtG having a majority black cast, or the soaps having a few gay characters. Soaps were ahead of their time in adapting to conservatism, as they began around the mid-90s. That may be what keeps them alive...although I think it's mostly just apathy and also attempts to replace them failing. The best to hope for is they will not just cancel everything to save a few bucks and turn the timeslots over to affiliates for more Sinclair news propaganda, like what's happening to late night.

I don't think they will want to put out the money for a regular series. It does seem like they want some plan but aren't sure where to go. The primetime attempt would have failed. I think 2-3 TV-movies a year could work, if they just make the effort.

ALL: Speculation on the Future of Successful Daytime Soap Operas
I think we've been there for a long time now - 20-25 years or more. There are still scraps of quality, but it's mostly loyalty and familiarity which have kept the remaining soaps on. I do think with less network pressure than past years, there's a chance for newer writers to come through, but it hasn't really happened yet. And the tools which were in place for a long time to help newer talent find its way into daytime have been dismantled.

ALL: They Almost Became
Denise Pence recently said she auditioned to play Jackie Scott on Guiding Light. Cindy Pickett got the part, but Katie was then created for Denise.

It's a shame...I suppose if this was a story Korte or CVE didn't want they kept it longer than we thought they would. I do wonder what they will do with Drew as his scheming now has much less weight. Unless this is where they try to redeem him to where he was pre-Mulcahey. I hope not.

Thanks @Liberty City and @Vee . I have to admit that I think Sherilyn would have been good casting as a broken Jennifer (and poor Jennifer was always broken)...but that writing was unplayable.

That date could make sense. Daytimers is the only soap magazine I know of which used the style in the photo. Not just the typeface but that specific type of inflammatory headline. One I remember was about an actress whose character had been beaten by a man, and it was something along the lines of, "Can ____ take a beating?" Thanks for sharing these old articles.

@Maxim Thanks for your reviews and clips. I did not realize the Carlo murder was still going on... Mia Korf truly is a goddess. That spat between Alex and Dorian was new to me and a lot of fun. You could tell the writer enjoyed the sparring match. This is a different look for Alex, one I wish she'd tried more often, with the perm and the spit curls, or whatever was going on. That gaudy A around her neck, and Dorian's digs, amused me. I'm surprised she didn't ask if Alex had one in scarlet. Alex's remark about just why Bulge was named Bulge also amused me - I always did wonder if that's why he had that name...
