I don't know how McTavish got hired, but P&G was stepping up efforts to mimic primetime. They hired Stern and Black to write ATWT in early '96, and it was so disastrous, they were replaced before the year was out. (Stern and Black had written for Falcon Crest)
I'm sure P&G hoped McTavish would be their "lightening in a bottle" ala Pam Long, hiring an actress/writer. I'm not sure McTavish hated the show, but she no longer understood it. The way she handled Nola's return proved that.
