DAYS OF OUR LIVES Moves to Peacock From NBC on September 12

If SNL ends with a retirement of Lorne Michaels that is fine supposedly SNL was one of the most popular things on Peacock as they have back catalog.

I can see local stations being upset as they will get the irate calls when Days stops airing on their affiliate in September.

Well when you keep Carlivati and throw Giddens into the mix, Days was bound to fail. Time will tell but a 5 day a week soap streaming is new territory. I'm doubtful that Days will last much beyond what is already contractually negotiated. My guess is that Days will eventually become an occasional Beyond Salem 5 episode arc a couple times a year.

I am kind of in favor of SNL ending when Lorne goes.  I cannot think of anyone that would be named his successor that would have the same clout with the network executives to keep the show as it always has been.  And I fear that interference will change the show in a fundamental way.  Lorne has kept the wolves at bay for decades.

Ok, With Whom we have to Speak? Leave DOOL on NBC and get Rich with Classic Episodes!!!!!!!!!!!! Please Since the success of The Doctors on Streaming The Right owners should have known Better than keeping things Hidden, I'm pretty sure a Streaming with Any Soap Episodes over 20 years old would be very successful!!!!!!!!

The SNL episodes on there are hacked to bits, although I guess that doesn't matter to everyone. At one point Lorne said he wanted SNL to go on without him, but then Kenan Thompson went out and very heavy-handedly suggested SNL should end when he retires, so who knows what they are planning now. I hope NBC will try at least one season without him as I don't think the show needs to shut down just because his ego isn't there.

As for this news, I'm astonished. There seemed to be zero notice. A nearly 60 year old show just dumped from the network. Many of the viewers will not be going to Peacock. Is this just a way for them to kill the show off without getting as much backlash?

This is on paper something that could keep the genre going, but when you have one of the WORST HEADWRITERS OF ALL TIME there, it's difficult to be optimistic.

Still, if any show can survive into a new era it's DAYS, I suppose.

The show has been under strict network  control before (especially in the mid-late '90s) and it benefited them in some ways as Lorne has a lot of bad habits. There are plenty who  could replace him, including some who now work there under him. The show, if it stays on, is likely going to face big budget cuts either way, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing.

With that said, this DAYS news makes that seem less likely...

I'd be interested to know from those on this board how many watch it live with commercials versus watching it on cable streaming or DVR?

There seems to be a dedicated few that watch it live daily and then post here.

However, I've not watched a soap live since the Reagan administration (since we're also admitting our age).

So, except for the fee, it seems like the same viewing experience to me whether it is streamed on nbc.com or Peacock.  And I'd rather pay $5-$15 for a couple of streaming services then $95 for a whole cable package with a with a bunch of sports that I don't watch.

I don't watch any soap live on TV unless I come across it if I left the TV running in the background. I mostly watch the shows online through streaming websites or apps on TV/phone. Watch at my own pace and decide which episodes.

    • I really have no problem with Kai as a character or with the actor. The problem is putting together two very nice people -- Kai and Trina. Neither of them has a bad side, neither of them has a devil on the shoulder, neither of them is impulsive. I think that's a problem in a soap relationship. Yeah, I agree. All this freaking out might make sense if Lulu wanted to do a tabloid expose on BLQ's LOVE CHILD. We have no indication that's the case.
    • So Sonni would have somebody to talk to who she wasn't conspiring with (Will or Alan)? Alex kept telling Sonni how important her friends were...when she had virtually no friends. Instead they created loyal servants like Jane and Vera to give Alex people to play off of. They did that with Iris on AW, but Vivien was mostly there for comic relief Alex keeping Marah's paternity a secret was absurd. But I still love the scene between Alex and Alan where he convinces her by reminding her how they protected each other from their abusive father. Chris and Bev ATE that scene. Unfortunately, that took place only a few months before he exited the show...always thought they could have built on that, explored more how being Brandon's children screwed them both up. Maybe even used it as an explanation for the way their relationship could constantly swing from hatred to love. Instead of it being merely dictated by the plot.
    • The first one is Cass Winthrop dressed as Krystle Lake on Another World (not from his original creation of the character to hide from the loan shark Tony the Tuna, but at a romance convention trying to find out what had happened to Felicia who was missing). The second one is also Another World, Jake McKinnon as Doris although I don't recall what his purpose was.
    • I know there was one brief scene in the summer of 1989 where Lillian did mention Calla.. but in relation to her past relationship to Ross and it was to Roger while he was a patient at Cedars.  I think he was trying to pump her for information on Ross.. and for some reason, Calla's name came up.   I could see perhaps Beth mentioning that her mother Lillian was visiting Calla.. but not exactly giving any sort of details as to the going ons in Calla's life off screen.

    • They're neither great nor terrible AFAIK, but it is more a question of the streaming numbers in this day and age vs. actual TV airings. The Chibnall era reminded me much more of the crisis years, but I do think it's a very real possibility now as well due to the streaming bubble collapse affecting the show and its prospects.
    • ANYTHING to get her off the screen..she COULD have been interesting if she and Van had a few face offs..(there was a mild one of her going back to work...but I wanted something meatier "Bitch, I am Vanessa Chamberlain and I don't take advice from someone who followed the..career path you did!" I did like Alex's outright disdain for her.
    • Thanks @Vee for the commentary.    I haven’t even watched this season yet after  I couldn’t get past the couple episodes last season…like it was too Disneyified for my taste, although I did think it was a least better than the Chibnall era (but so is a lot of things). I’ll probably go back and binge it now. Hoping this season ends on a high note. I did read the ratings are terrible. As it stands I’m beginning to feel like what long time DW fans felt with S26 in 1989.
    • Yes, they are all on contract. Next.
