Characters that didn't survive a recast...

Flipside to the other recast topic.

What characters were deemed popular and important enough to be recast, but when the new actor didn't click, the character was dropped - sometimes for good.

Two that come to mind

AMC

Angie Hubbard. When Debbi Morgan left for Generations,Saundra Quartermain was cast but Angie was dropped and only returned years later with Debbi again in the role.

Same with Liza Colby - Marcy Walker was replaced by Alice Haining but the written out until Marcy returned.

Can you think of others?

Natalie Dillon on AMC. Kate Collins left, and they replaced with Melody Anderson. What were they thinking? It was a disaster. She was killed off the next year.

Connor Walsh on ATWT. Another WTF recast with Luna Moody from OLTL replacing Allyson Rice-Taylor. Just a baffling decision from Felicia Minei Behr, one she reversed after massive fan derision. The character was unfortunately trashed (although I thought the character had gone through the ringer prior to the recast).

With Mac and Colleen on Y&R I think that was a little more nuanced. Colleen was successfully recast with Adrienne Leon who looked the part and had great chemistry with the cast. Had she not been fired due to her imaginary weight gain she could’ve been their next leading lady. Mac did have trouble with recasts though and I wish they hadn’t let Ashley Bashioum go for Rachel Kimsey. Had they hired Melissa Claire Egan as Mac I think she would’ve done well in the role.

One very popular role that didn’t survive a recast is Mary Ryan on Ryan’s Hope. Kate Mulgrew was so popular in the role and the writers were very against the thought of recasting so I feel they sank any recast they got. The first recast was very good but she had no chance since she had no support.

Lance Prentiss (Y&R).....After dark haired John McCook left the role, they recast with very blonde Dennis Cole. He lasted about a year or so before Bill Bell wrote the character out.

Patty Williams( Y&R)......After Lilibet Stern left, they recast with Andrea Evans who only lasted a year and the character was not seen again for years. The character was brought back in the form of Stacy Haiduk and the character was now a psycho.

@Chris B Anyone else find it ironic that  the actor playing Traci's daughter was allegedly fired over weight!

ATWT - Connor and Molly was two mammoth recasting failures - and ATWT was pretty solid in casting. But I have to add Jon Lindstrom as Craig - the character was dead to me. While HB was an eccentric Craig - his range and charisma made him watchable, but JL was so miscast that I FF through pretty much every Craig scene.

Yeah, in addition to Connor and Molly the show failed epicly with that 1996 Paul Ryan recast(I forget his name), twice with Craig(Meek and Lindstrom) but also could never successfully recast Lucy either, and that 2008 Mike recast was blink and miss(mainly due to lack of story).

I'd also add Joe Dietz as Alan-Michael on GL, who was totally miscast and then subsequently written off within six months after being in the role which had been a leading mainstay character for a good decade and it was almost a full decade before we saw A-M again.

Kimberly Brady on Days didn't survive too long with Ariane Muenker/Ariana Chase playing the role and stopped being a regular character permanently.

    • Honestly, they should've ordered more of 2000 Malibu Road for the 1992-93 midseason and aired it when Knots went on a break. That was probably their best shot.    Then of course they fumbled Central Park West by airing it in the 9PM slot instead of a 10PM slot where it would've been away from the Fox dramas. CPW got its best rating by airing randomly on a Sunday and when it was taken off the air for a "re-tooling", Party of Five's ratings actually had a spike, so clearly they were feeding off each other. But being a smaller network focused on a certain demographic, Fox could afford to be patient Party of Five, CBS couldn't...
    • Agree on Bruce Gray as Owen; they needed to cast star power. He was too lightweight against Kim and he had no chemistry with Frances Fischer except more gay buddy or daddy figure.  I loved Nola and Eliot together though. Lee Godart should have been longer term.
    • Andre has the worst fashion of the males which is off putting for someone as fine as he is. His jackets and sweaters look dated and no vintage does not work for him
    • I don’t recall MSW having a toy line in the late 80’s or early 90’s like all those Saturday morning cartoons did LOL but thought this was cute when I saw it in a vintage toy store yesterday:

    • Copying and pasting pasting this here as to not to derail the KL thread lol Wow I forgot CBS actually did try multiple attempts to come up with a soapy replacement for Knots on Thursday nights in the 10/9 slots for the 93-94 season.   Angel Falls had promise but CBS didn’t give it a fair chance. Latham’s Second Chances got even worse ratings than Angel Falls and wasn’t given a second chance when the Northridge quake destroyed the show’s sets. One West Waikiki looked gorgeous but was a blink you missed it affair. Finally we got Hotel Malibu, a quasi follow-up to Second Chances that stayed as the summer replacement series it was. CBS switched gears and had Chicago Hope air in the slot…against ER. It made the Top 30 but obviously underperformed below expectations. CBS gave up, and gave us 48 Hours for years there. It wasn’t until the 2002-03 season when CBS finally produced a Top 20 show for that spot with Without A Trace against an aging ER.
    • Of course I join in on wishing that Peacock & Corday & Sony would all together come to the conclusion that NOW would be a fine time to put some of these gems in the archive on full display!!! But, at the same time I'd like to give kudos to the fact that behind the scenes they've been doing the great work of preservation by taking tapes, etc. & converting them to modern digital formats. Besides the important fact of preserving them it means they are ready to go!

    • Bill and Hayley’s living room set should be redressed as their bedroom. We’ve not seen their gorgeous circular entry way set since the first week? Why not utilise that more and build them a living room off those double doors? The hotel room also doesn’t have a bed? Does only Dani have a bedroom?
