I absolutely don't think we're supposed to see her like that.
Vanessa started out as a tragic, troubled comedic character and has morphed (well before the writing change) into a delusional woman who's been plunged into a dark world on a power trip who is pursuing an obsessive, doomed romance with a bad man she doesn't know murdered her husband. Every day she rhapsodizes about how good Joey is for her, the writers are driving the nails deeper. Intentionally.
I think she's a gray character who is making a tragic fool of herself, but that's part of the drama for me. I do not think she is being presented as a positive heroine. That's not the show I'm watching, so I've never had issues with Vanessa or LB's performance. I think Vanessa's stories and dysfunctional character arc has been one of the few consistently and intelligently layered and nuanced since Day 1, and I think Bugliogi is killing it. I've been saying that for over a year. That's JMO, I don't need everyone to agree. The things that enrage people about Vanessa are just features of her storyline to me. I get why they make people angry. She's a delulu person!
