Empire: Discussion Thread

Honestly, as an unknown actor getting $20k per episode for a new tv drama isn't bad, plus there tend to be a small year-to-year increase  - of course, Empire ended up exploding in its first season and even if it's come down back to reality, it's still one of the best rated shows in the 18-49 demographic that advertisers love. I can see the frustration of feeling a bit underpaid, but he's not the first or last one. I believe the cast of This Is Us is pretty low paid for the amount of viewers it gets.

I remember that show too, On Our Own. It didn't last very long and it was most known for them casting all of the Smollett siblings as real life siblings. (Except the very oldest sibling on the show who dressed up as a woman/a fake Aunt so he could continue to raise them.) Journee was always the one who had more steady work out of the siblings in that family, though I will say I think Jussie as Jamal has had the most well-known individual acting role of the siblings. It's true the actors playing the sons weren't really known that well by a lot of people, (though Trai did play in the minor role of Mookie on All My Children).

I read the actors of This is Us five central cast members ended up getting very large raises before Season 3 began. It is reported they are all now  get $250,000 per episode (When signing bonuses are factored in) and now will earn 4.5 million a season. They all started out getting different amounts when the show began, with Milo getting the most of the five central characters ($115,000) and Chrissy Metz getting the least. ($40,000)

I can understand how some actors especially new actors may not get that much at first. But I can also understand actors wanting/thinking they deserve a raise after a show becomes pretty successful like Empire did. I do wish that Jussie hadn't resorted to these awful tactics, his actions definitely are very damaging to himself and a lot of people.

The fact that this was about money disgusts me.  I'm not even going to say what I think of him for that.  I will say that I have exactly zero sympathy for someone making $20, 000 an episode or $65,000 or whatever. That's still more money than 90% of Americans make.  That is the most f*cked up reason I have ever heard for committing such a heinous breach of trust.

Didn't Jerry Springer do the same thing with a hooker when he was mayor of Cleveland?

Also, this is 2019.  Who in the hell still pays anybody with a check in 2019?  Has the n***a ever heard of Zelle?  Hell, has he ever heard of cash?

Like hell!  They'll just use old and unused footage, and use the back of some stand-in's head for the rest.

90%?  Try 99.9%! 65K x 18 episodes = $1,170,000

It's disgusting - this only makes it harder for hate crime victims to be believed or heard. I'm from Chicago and two big red flags from get-go: 1) Chicago ain't 'MAGA' country in any shape or form; and 2) it was 2 am during the height of the Polar Vortex. Ain't nobody sitting in wait outside. I can't tell you how sickened I am about this.

Since Empire had 4 sons now, I'm betting Jamal was the one that was 'odd man out' and did this in an attempt to stop them from doing it.

Oh, no problem.  I only know that through some people that I met in college who told me.  At the time his show was on the air (it's not still on the air, is it?) and the fact that he'd been the mayor of a major midwestern city was quite something to digest.

Speaking of which, no offense but I'm surprised that Empire is still on the air.  Until last week, I'd completely lost track of the show.

I wonder if they’d go there. Clearly, recasts in primetime happen, but they’re still relatively rare, especially for someone who had a role as prominent as Jussie’s. At the same time, I’d think Jamal would be a pivotal character  for Lee Daniels to keep as an out black gay man. It’s important representation on a show watched by millions of black folks.

Damn, Jussie. What a mess.

    • Yes, they did.  I still have them.  I think there were three.  AMC and GH as well.
    • Ah okay, thats what I thought. I was hoping I missed the announcement somewhere. Thanks for the clarification.
    • A new day in Salem… and a new day for Days.  I like the way everybody found out and absorbed the news about John’s death, and how they all eventually found their way to Marlena’s to offer their condolences. I’m not particularly sure why they waited until the next day to tell everybody but I don’t really mind it.  We finally got Roman’s perspective! His scenes with Kayla were one of the best parts of today. I’m glad that Roman is thankful for everything that John did for his kids. I agree with posters who said that he should’ve had a scene like this with John, but I’m happy we got this at least.  Julie was used very well today too. She’s definitely the best person for Marlena to have scenes with at the moment. Hopefully, Julie continues to be there for her. And yes, I totally agree with Marlena and Belle sending EJ away when he came to the apartment. I’m curious to see what’s going to happen to his and Belle’s relationship in the aftermath of all this. And, while I enjoyed most of Brady and Kristen’s scenes, I still think the ship has sailed for them. Hopefully, the aftermath of John’s death causes Brady to finally end this thing with her once and for all.  And, I see a lot of people were wearing some kind of shade of purple today.

    • Wow, I love that current and former actors are participating in this. I barely recognize Staci Greason! She looks fine, just very different. But I will be happy to hear anecdotes from her. I shipped RoJohn and Isabella hard back in the day, and I sobbed buckets in my dorm room at college when Izzy B passed. Honestly, I'm interested in everyone's stories. Drake seemed like he was well loved among the cast.
    • When she first appeared, I was sure she was setting Tyrell up for a prank. She was too much of a manic pixie dream girl- I wasn't surprised Tyrell also became suspicious. Now I'm not so sure. If Jessica genuinely likes Tyrell, it seems like a missed opportunity to not have started her out as a bully, then we see her gradually catch feelings for Tyrell.  The McBrides are definitely the "C" family of BTG. They always get last priority. There have been a few times where the Doug/Vanessa/Joey characters reference off screen conversations which seem too important to not show us. Like when Doug thanked Joey for giving him extra time to pay off the loan. When did that happen? Or when we abruptly moved from Vanessa/Joey at Uptown to Vanessa/Doug in the hotel room. The McBrides don't even have their own set - even though Vanessa is a realtor. It's a shame because I am a fan of the characters and actors.

I am also adjusting to KR as Ted but I feel that AM and MJ had way more chemistry as father and daughter than AM and KR. We saw Eva dream of having a real relationship with MJ's version of Ted for months so it's a bit of a bummer not to have that payoff with the original actor except for those scenes in MJ's last episode.  Something I noticed about Eva today is how she takes genuine delight in being a schemer. As badly as she wants to be a Richardson, she still has so much of her mom in her. It was jarring seeing her earnestly promise to steer clear of Leslie in her scene with Ted, then immediately switch attitudes when her mom showed up.  I'm very surprised with how quickly the accident story has been moving along. I was sure that it would be months if not years before people figured out it was Leslie on the motorcycle, not to mention responsible for the potassium overdose. I'm looking forward to seeing how MVJ and Guza avoid writing Leslie into a corner.  Finally, I have been loving the Articulettes story. Bonita Brisker was just the right amount of OTT - remember Sharon is supposed to be even more angry than Tracy is. If Sharon didn't come in swinging, people would say she fell flat. The way Sharon and Tracy describe the breakup is so Supremes-meet-Original Recipe Destiny's Child. I get the sense that MVJ is re-writing the Return to Love Tour as a roman a clef, and I love it. I'm looking forward to finding out what the secret they share is. If Dante Green is as shady as Berry Gordy was, it's something dark. If/when they go through with the reunion, I expect Dante to show up and claim to own the Articulettes trademark in a Lou Pearlman-esque twist.
    • Other than hanging out with Liz, all of Lucky's stories have been stalled out or dropped; the relationship with his son; his wanderlust. He hasn't been involved in any of the action/adventure or con artist stuff. I don't think he's even had a scene with Sidwell since the latter came to town. He's a real after thought. I doubt he's long for the show.
