I know a lot of this is already out there, but since I was mostly posting old articles in the cancelled soaps section I thought I might start posting some stuff on the current soaps here, just under different threads for each soap.

If you're interested in this, let me know, and I'll post more, or someone who has a lot of good stuff can post more.

I guess the feeling is they might be anticipating cancellation and not return at all or just to tape the final episodes.

My somewhat uninformed take on the DAYS taping schedule is two-fold. 

 

On the one hand I reject the theory that taping in advance does not allow for audience response to guide the storylines.  Fans tend to want to have more influence than what is realistic and the theory assumes that nobody in production can see chemistry (or lack thereof) between actors. 

 

On the other hand, it seems as if stories are being written to the production schedule in terms of being able to do multiple scenes between limited cast members in a limited number of sets.  Often one group of characters will have a week worth of scenes in one set without ever running into people from other storylines, because they were filmed on a seperate schedule.   As a result, DAYS often seems as if the characters are living on separate islands and one set of characters never seems to react to the action in another part of town.

My dream is that if DAYS does get cancelled, Retro TV can start broadcasting the vintage eps, the way that station does with The Doctors.

I would love to see that happen, but at the same time I really don't want it to be cancelled. 

Am i being to optimistic for thinking its gonna get renewed?.

This is a lot longer time period than they usually take. This is scary.

 

Now, having said that, I'd like to change the subject. Who wrote the Gideon storyline?

Perhaps I'm thick, but doesn't this indicate that they'll tape July around April 2020? That would be huge, but...

They have never gone on hiatus for this amount of time and at this time of year. The usual hiatus is 5 weeks long and occurs in the summertime. 

 

This hiatus is clearly structured around whether the show gets renewed. Any new program that fills DAYS' slot would be launched in September, so if they've got enough material to get them through July, a return to filming in April would allow them to film enough episodes to wrap up the series in the month of August. April is generally the latest that a DAYS renewal is announced, it's sometimes announced in March or even February during the TCA Press Tour.

i hope it gets renewed.

This may be a dumb question, but I wonder how the hiatus saves money? 

 

Actors are contracted for a certain number of episodes whether they are filmed in a day or a month.  We've read that they've all taken pay cuts, but 3 episodes a week are still 3 paid episodes regardless of how speedily they are filmed.  Below the line staffers are union employees who get a certain yearly salary regardless of how limited the production timeline becomes.  Writers and producers are also paid an annual fee regardless of how they film.  So, unless the utility bills for water and power for the months when they go dark saves Sony millions of dollars a year, I don't know why it is more efficient? 

 

One would hazzard that the loss of directors and production staff who want to work 12 months a year would actually be less efficient.

Yeah, the more I think about this news, the more worried I become.  Folks, the sands may have finally run out of the old hourglass.

Everything old can't become new again until it dies, so I'm all for cancellation. I do think DAYS will be the next soap to go regardless.
