It's hysterical to see the very people who have been claiming voter fraud ever since the black guy won suddenly go "never mind!" It's another example of how the GOP poisoned its own well. I heard someone on NPR this morning say that since the Ohio GOP has split with Trump they aren't sure they want to vote Republican down ballot. It's a mess.

I've been thinking that. I know Texas has millions of Latinos and white voters who don't vote republican.

now as far as Missouri, the rural areas vote overwhelmingly republican.....but St. Louis, Kansas City & Jefferson City Vote overwhelmingly democratic.

I find it funny that this year's airing of It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown--the 50th anniversary airing, no less--is on right before the debate tonight. Talk about a study in contrast. 

AND both the MO Senate and Governor's races are VERY competitive--and right now, the Democrats have the edge.

The GOP promoted itself as the party of family, faith and traditional values, which I suspect appealed to many Latinos, particularly in the South and Southwest. Also, many Latinos migrated from countries that had governments that were seen as oppressing personal freedoms (Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua, etc) or at war (Colombia), and the anti-Communist, anti-socialist rhetoric that the GOP offered probably seemed like a comfort to people flocking to the U.S. from politically unstable countries.

 

I think it was different for the Latinos settling in Northeastern states or even California because states like New York (especially New York City) generally saw the Democrats as more attractive because of Democratic rhetoric promoting socio-economic values, emphasis on promoting the social good of all, no matter where you come from, contributing to the growth of a better society for all. Whereas the Republicans emphasized 'up by your bootstraps' success of the individual, the Democrats emphasized maintaining and cultivating programs that would help people succeed and even 'a helping hand' to success for those who needed it. To Latinos who were migrating from countries that they loved but where economic opportunity was lacking (Puerto Rico, the DR, a few South American countries that were in economic turmoil, e.g. Argentina), the Democratic party must have seemed like a window of opportunity, while allowing them to keep their identities with them.

 

The anti-immigrant voices in the GOP have been gradually getting louder and more prominent over the past 20 years and so has the shift of many Latinos from the GOP to the Dems

 

I think you're also seeing some generational splits in the Latino community. For example, a lot of younger Cuban-Americans now favor eliminating the embargo, while some of their grandparents (and even some parents) may still be hardliners.

 

In Texas, many Mexican-American young women (under 45) have been opting for education and career before marriage or children, many are having smaller families, less children and so family planning and organizations like PP are no longer shunned and the support for women having choices is getting more vocal support from the Latino community and groups of highly educated Mexican-Americans are now opting for political choices that reflect their progressive stance. 

 

From what I've read, experienced from talking to friends, I feel like the shift has been happening but it has been very gradual.

The problem with this, even if you believe it's true, is that we have heard time and time again that sexual assault against women doesn't matter. It's all lies. It's a conspiracy. Yet here we are saying it does matter if it involves Bill.

He is being humiliated (and embarrassing himself) worse than debate #1. She called him a puppet of Putin.

No worries. I was just surprised that no one had yet mentioned what was happening in the debate. I think a lot of people are exhausted by Trump and his antics.
