  1. I guess Doug and Julie would have continued in the parental role. I think they were still on 3 days a week before they left so they would go down to once a week to worry about Hope . They were told that D&J would not have a story. Maybe they would throw in a few subplots like Julie getting a new job, or Doug having business problems etc. Had they decided to stay maybe things would have imporoved down the track and David, Dougie or Steve might have come back to give the Williams more to do.
  2. I do not dislike Amelia, I don't know her. I do dislike her lackluster portrayal of Victoria as compared to Heather Tom.
  3. Ron sure seems happy to kill off /write off Horton family members. But not so interested in nurturing that same family. I might be missing a few, but off the top of my head, offscreen Hortons that could be used in some capacity Tommy (is he really dead?) Sandy (and any children she may have had) Marie Jessica Blake Mike Jeremy Steve Olsen Spencer Olsen Melissa Scott Banning Nathan Hope And any other children those offscreen characters may have.
  4. Nanette Sargent Judy and Jane Vivian Masquerade Baby Michael Secret Diary Elsa Morgan 1938 Right to happiness 1941 Road of Life 1944 Guiding Light 1946 Presenting Michael Scott (Local Chicago daily serialization) 'A Tale of Two Cities' Madame De Farge/Manette
  5. Any legitimate gripes Brenda may have have been derailed by her erratic behavior over the years. Her book was apparently an erratic mess full of typos and exaggerated /false claims.
  6. Mike was SORASED because of the Bill/Laura story and I guess they needed an older actor to play the angle of the son with mixed up parentage. Couple that with the need for a next generation of family esp after Y&R put the focus heavily on the young 'uns. Viewers at that time knew Mike and David were roughly the same age so they wouldn't have bought David being years younger than Mike. Wes Eure and Richard Guthrie both were popular so TPTB probably were happy with the decision. But long term it backfired. My solution-age up Mike and David less drastically so maybe they would be 12 or so by the mid 70's. A competent actor could play the necessary beats in the Mike and David's stories. In terms of young male characters my solution ,as I've stated before, would be to have Richard Guthrie as Julie's brother Steve, with Julie taking on a motherly role. Steve could be involved with Brooke, Valerie etc. Wesley Eure could have been Maggie's brother that she raised, who is welcomed into the Horton clan. He can have the romance with Trish and Margo. That leaves Mike and David ready to take over in the early/mid 80's as new male Horton leads.
  7. Any thoughts on Bert Bauer? I don't recall her ever favoring Mike over Ed or vice versa.
  8. Everytime I watched Gina as Phyllis, I wished she had have been cast as Victoria.
  9. Cathleen Cordell Second Husband Diane Lockwood Search for Tomorrow early 50's
  10. Nov 1983 'Guiiding Light’ axes Hope as 'old guard’ is written off By JON-MICHAEL REED NEW YORK — It happened without warning She was in Springfield one day securing a divorce and then on to New York the next. It has to rate as one of the quickest exits by a major soap character in quite a while And one of the sloppiest The lady In question is Hope Bauer Spaulding played by Elvera Roussel on “Guiding Light" A few years ago when the show began rating among the top three or four daytime soaps Miss Spaulding was enmeshed in a "juicy” love quadrangle with Alan Spaulding and Rita and Ed Bauer. That particular story was largely credited with renewing viewer interest in the three-decade-old serial. A succession of writers and producers diminished the importance of three of the characters (The actress who played Rita had the foresight to move out of her own volition before she could be “wasted”) But none of them seemed to have pursued an apparent goal of ridding 'GL' of its former character image other than the current regime. Miss Spaulding is merely the latest casualty of what must be a plan to beget a new "GL" with story focus moved from familiar core characters to recently introduced ones. What's left of the “old guard” receives storyline scraps. Like many other soaps these days continuity familiarity and family ties have become dirty phrases. The show's leading man Philip Spaulding Marler as attractive and good as he is as played by Grant Aleksander doesn’t have a family (his father and daddy's lady love were shipped out two months ago) The only other young folk on the show with any familial ties to long-running characters — Rick Bauer and Kelly Nelson — may as well be fatherless and uncleless respectively. There isn't an evident bond to link them to the past There is no sense of succeeding generations which is one of the strongest viewer-responsive aspects of soapdom. On “GL” lately the prime stories have involved people who are not merely unrelated to the show’s core but who are virtually strangers. The mystery of Annabelle Sims' traumas was excruciatingly drawn-out but the problem wasn’t just a laggardly paced story. The problem was compounded by the fact that the audience didn't know this lady. How can' one empathize with a soap character who has no past or links to people already established? The resolution which supposedly affected almost every Springfield resident with the name of Bauer Reardon Chamberlain or Lewis seemed tagged on as an afterthought. An essentially Intriguing story lost its impetus by disavowing time-honored soap opera principles The newcomers are taking over the town. Even Nola and Quint who only a year ago were at an exciting story forefront have lost their luster. Miss Roussel remains optimistic however “After five years it's time to go to move on I loved everybody on the show but in a way 1 feel a sense of relief" she says.
  11. Lots of intense scenes at Crimson Lights. They'll hash that out at Society. Meanwhile the whole Devon gets custody thing has happened with no input from Nina, Ashley or Victor? Really? And if Devon is so into families and fathers maybe he should get in touch with Tucker (or is he still 'off grid' ?)
  12. Yes it was odd that Doug and Julie never had a child. Doug went off and fathered Dougie but that has never been referenced. Perhaps they felt that Julie being a grandma around that time would be jarring if she had a child. Also the fact that Bill and Susan didn't have children may have been a factor. It would have been refreshing if it had been addressed with Doug and Julie making a conscious decision not to have children for a variety of reason. That could have led to some plot points. Maggie could think Julie selfish when she was unable to have a child with Mickey. Tom and Alice could have different viewpoints and Hope might be upset not to have a sibling.
  13. Julie was aged when she became mother to an adult son and grandmother in her 30's . In some 70's shots she looks like Helen Wagner! Overall,Susan did retain a youthful look and was looking good in her 90-93 stint. I know she is in her late 70's now-but with the floral overjackets, slacks, clompy sandals, chunky necklaces and cropped grey hair she does present as a granny. Suzanne Rogers has a much more stylish look and isn't much younger.
  14. Camryn doesn't give off slutty kitten (Summer) or barbie bimbo(Abby) vibes so she's sent to the back of the line.
  15. Crystal! And it's revealed she and Nate have been having an affair. He was feeling too much pressure from Elena over home decor.
  16. The mandate at days at the time was to write for the younger characters. Days asked them to renegotiate their contract for fewer appearances (less money) and there was no guarantee of story.
  17. The mystery is why Jack would get involved again with a psycho like Phyllis when he was super judgmental towards Sally and couldn't continue the relationship.
  18. That someone appears to be Chelsea's ex Calvin Boudreau, But isn't he already dead? Turns out Calvin had a twin , who Connor mistook for his stepdad that treated Chelsea badly. Connor has intense therapy at Crimson Lights with Sharon and after 2 sessions she declares he has recovered and ready to move on.
  19. That was 5th Dimension. Of course a show called Hotel led to being constricted to that setting, so some plots suffered because of that. But to get so many seasons out of it was quite an accomplishment. I thought the supporting cast was bland and a little pointless. Half the time they were lucky to get a throwaway scene. The actors were bland. Maybe it would have been better to have different hotel employees featured. That would have added more variety. My impression was that the storylines were about the guests with an occasional focus on James and Connie. Did they ever do stories about the employees? Like a guest star who was employed at the hotel?
  20. At that time I don't think anyone working in primetime would have had any idea who Jamie Lyn Bauer was. She would have had to battle it out with all the other pretty ladies at auditions. There was no connection b/w CBS daytime and nightime in spotting and nurturing talent. Genie had some cache because GH had broken through due to Luke/Laura and Elizabeth Taylor giving it mainstream coverage. Bare Essence suffered from poor writing. If an actress of the calibre of Jessica Walter couldn't make her character work, there was no hope. I remember Ava's catchphrase was 'puss' as in 'I feel sorry for you, puss' It was quite annoying.
  21. Griffith/Morina are on top of this. They have a carefully thought out plan. Over the next 14 months, very little will happen But then in March 2023 ....something will happen!!!
  22. I'm reading comments on other sites how poor Abby is being manipulated by the men around her. I hate that narrative that always gives grown women a pass for their stupid actions. Abby should have told Devon to back off when he started interfering with her family and relationship. As awful as the whole surrogate plot has been, there were issues that needed to be dealt with. Sure Devon could have feelings for Dom but that could have been addressed differently. He could start talking babies with Amanda and she could not be ready, thus creating conflict. Instead she's on board with having some kid around the house when she just moved in.
  23. Maybe Noah could have clashed with Rey....you know, to create some conflict b/w Sharon and Rey,Sharon and Noah, Rey and Noah. Nick would have a stake in this too. Does Nick have anything to do with Chelsea, former love of his?
  24. I don't know if you are earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a year , writer's block is justified. Many of us have come up with ideas, plot points etc off the top of our heads that could be utilized. I don't envy Griffith this job in the sense that there seems to be forces at play we aren't privy to. People are always saying Sony/CBS interference but what plots are they vetoing ? The stuff they approve that gets to air is pretty awful. The set situation is pretty dire, but doesn't make sense. A bedroom set can be set up for a 3 year old boy, a safe house in Spain that is used for a couple of episodes, an elaborate Tuscan villa ,NY apartment etc but no offices or bedrooms for regular characters. Josh needs to cut back on the business stories that don't make sense and go for more intimate stories that can be told within the budget framework.
  25. Domestic bliss...what drama!! They will discuss this at Society...
