Like James and Taylor in the earthquake on B&B... when you're stuck somewhere, often in a life or death situation, and give in just once. Jack and Jill in the 80s is a Y&R example but Y&R doesn't do it tons. I can't really envision an exciting enough situation on current Y&R haha. Maybe Nate and Victoria will do it in an elevator at Newman LOL.

I tuned into Y&R this week in anticipation of the 50th, and God I am bored. How can a show with such a marvellous cast be boring?

This all comes down the writing. The scenes are so short, so the dialogue has no chance to be emotional. It’s just plot. I want to laugh, I want to cry. But the whole thing is just dry.

I love this cast. I love all the familiar faces. I know what these players are capable of, because I have watched them shine for decades. This writing is letting them down, and letting the audience down.

The only weak link the last three days has been Michelle Stafford. He delivery in her scenes with James Hyde and Susan Walters was so stilted. It was like she did not know her lines and reading off cue cards. Give the girl a break to recharge. She can do better.

Josh Griffith is a boring writer with zero imagination.

Today's show was the best so far of the week.

Mamie scenes were retro great! The best part of today's show.

Jill was in rare form. Love her!

I fast forwarded all the Phyliss scenes.

The show was ruined with the Chelsea propping and her fuckin appearance.

I hate the character with a passion!

In honor of Mamie's return, here's a clip of a Mamie/Jill confrontation I'd never seen before (timestamped below):

Veronica Redd is so good. She's clearly relishing having material to sink her teeth into.

What will it take for Y&R to look like how it did in the 2000-2005 era? They were already HD back then. The most frequently used sets are the same sets today. But why does the show look so cheap now, when it looked so cinematic then? It can not just be different directors? Can they bring Ed Scott in to reset the production values?

That easy reset can do a world of good for this show. God, I miss the dark, moody, and candle lit episodes. These bright lights are not doing the sets, or the cast, any favours.

I am loving Trevor St. John's Tucker and Eileen Davidson's Ashley. St. John is a strong performer, and actually has chemistry with Davidson. What a 180 from Stephen Nichol's forgettable run.

One of St. John's strengths is as a background actor. As the main scene partners, in today's case Bergman and Davidson, spar, he is still engaged in the scene and doing his own thing in the background. It is early, but I think he can create a meaningful Chancellor heir character.

The Chancellors need a fun dinner scene. It's such a rag-tag group of folks these days: Devon, Tucker, Chance, Billy. I think it would be so funny to see these four figure out how to be a family unit. Maybe Jill can bring them together, and let the sardonic jabs begin.

MAMIE!!!! You could just feel the warmth and history pour right off of her and Jack. And even with Billy. It warmed my heart. And Yes...that flashback. Someone pointed out that the same mirror from the flashback as well. See what happens when you allow sets to age. It gave everything such gravitas.

Speaking of gravitas, how I loved Jill vs Victor. And the spirit of Neil over that whole conversation. And it speaks to Victor's history with Devon that I mentioned the other day as well as Victor's relationship to Neil as his right hand man that those scenes held so much to them for me as well.

I lived for every moment Amanda was ON...READY...and taking no prisoners. And she runs into Abby at the end. If looks could kill...

I enjoyed Summer dressing down Phyllis as well. But Phyllis seeing the ring...yeeeah burn.

THANK YOU!!!

Fingers crossed for a rematch.

Chelsea and Daniel in an empty CL discussing Omega Sphere- is anyone the slightest bit interested on any level?

Nice to see some extras at the GCAC. If only the budget would allow for it on a regular basis.

And so far the women look decently dressed for once.Much better than in real life at the 50th party.

Disgrace that Mariah and Tessa are not there.

Devon in that mask....

    • Haha, love to hear it, and thank you! Yeah, I just write down thoughts/notes as I'm watching in this viewing journal I'm keeping.  So, you get my raw, honest thoughts in the moment without me having to go back and remember or curate anything.

Watros is great, and I've liked her from the beginning, so I'm excited to see her evolve and shine even more as Annie continues to descend. I'll keep an eye out for that scene.  I have to say, Rick cracks me up, there are times when he makes jokes and you can tell the actor is having fun with it and cracking himself up. He's endearing. Let me suffer!    So funny how big Josh's hair is in the 80s. Sign of the times, I guess.   I can't wait to finally see the Sonni storyline and watch a younger Michelle Forbes shine. It's on my list, I will go back in time eventually and do this
    • This was late 1993, right before Roger is shot.
    • Haha I guess so, and in this recent case, Alan absolutely deserved it (many times over, honestly).
    • It's hard to remember, as Holly and Blake always seemed to be on the outs over something.
    • Ohhh yes, these were exciting!  What year was this?  Another added bonus, watching Tangie lurk around like a thief with that black beanie.

I'm happy to hear I'm not alone in my thoughts over Gilly's exit and Vivian's first and likely only contract storyline. It was just a shame. On one hand, I'm glad they decided to finally write for this family (as Gilly was sorely underused in 1995), but then on the other... that was what they decided? Sure, it was a bit soapy, but oh so gross. They could have come up with something better.
    • Women slapping guys is a little more common.  I grew up with CBS, so it doesn't seem strange to me. If you got a slap, you usually really deserved it.
    • That could be it too. I just remember a slap at some point. That would have been around when she was made at Holly for "ruining" her one-sided relationship with Alan Michael. I don't know if you will be getting to 2000 (if you do - buckle up!) but there's a character who was intended to be Stacy.
    • Agree with all of this. They use stuff like the redecoration and the party as major events and nothing comes of it. Kyle/Claire is of no interest to me because Kyle has already been deeply in love with Lola and summer so his devotion to Claire is more of the same. And Claire is a character that came from a nonsense rewrite and now is presented as Little Miss Innocent, her dark past swept away. That charm bracelet of Nikki's must weigh a ton. The list of grandchildren seemed endless. The thing is, most of them are offscreen and ignored. Victoria seems like a neglectful parent. Was Dylan mentioned? Another dumb rewrite character. Not only is the show hampered by so many vet charcters, TPTB don't seem interested in venturing into new areas with them. Cole was brought by but there hasn't been any dramatic story that could impact on Victoria? What had he been doing all those years? So many characters w/o stories talking about businesses we never see.
    • I thought it was Sherry Stringfield, but maybe it was before Blake slept with Ross.
    • Thank you for the great background and summary - very helpful!  Yes, very odd they never brought her back, but at least J mentioned her, so not truly forgotten. Ah interesting, I guess I never realized that CBS was a bit more conservative/old-fashioned in a way, at least pre-2000 or so. It's funny, I wrote that about slapping, and then a few episodes later, Vivian storms into the Spaulding mansion and slaps Alan. It's like I spoke it into existence.
