Any storylines altered or dropped because of real world factors?

They rewrote a story point on OLTL in 2001 on the fly the week of 9/11. IIRC, Blair's plane to Mexico was supposed to crash, and she would deliver her baby (Jack) in the wreckage or something with Todd by her side. A cliffhanger or commercial break showed the plane suffering turbulence. When 9/11 happened, they hastily reshot and the plane landed safely.

I felt it was a mistake then and now that the soaps basically did not acknowledge 9/11 openly on air and in story. I take the Rosemary Prinz view of things (Prinz famously improvised a line about the Kennedy assassination during a live show on ATWT in 1963, the week after the shooting). The world goes through turmoil and these shows, which are companions to people throughout their real lives, should reflect it and be a source of not just comfort but commiseration. If Penny Hughes or Erica Kane or Viki Lord can talk about what we've gone through it can help other people deal with it too. I feel the same way about COVID today - I think it's a travesty GH in particular has not used it.

It’s especially weird that soaps are ignoring COVID, and yet other shows are not that actually air in syndication and stream seasons.  This is a snapshot of a specific time and place, and yes, those shows might hopefully someday feel dated.  But these soaps appear delusional (B&B’s kissing dolls in particular).

Melrose Place's original idea for the season 3 cliffhanger was that Kimberly was supposed to kidnap Sydney and fly a small plane into the building - because someone then crashed a small airplane into the White House lawn in September 1994, the idea was nixed. Of course they then went with having Kimberly blowing up the building and then had to delay the explosion to the fall because of Oklahoma...

There's also the infamous aborted Janet Green bomb storyline from around the same time on AMC, IIRC. I think her supposedly taking Brooke's face via plastic surgery tied into that somehow and was also scrapped to keep Robin Mattson.

Here are some I thought of for primetime shows:

On the Sopranos it seems like they had plans for Livia Soprano to have a full on mob war with her son Tony before Nancy Marchand's death

It seems like there were bigger plans for the "others " on Lost because Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros DUI.

Oh Lost.  Remember the couple that were always there but we had not seen them before, and then they just killed them off at the end of the season because it wasn’t working.

On GH, whatever the Cassadine story was supposed to be was disrupted first by Bob Guza leaving for Sunset Beach, and then again when Genie went on maternity leave and basically refused to return until the writing was better and she wanted to.

It seems like pregnancies have possibly changed many storyline directions over the years.

    • OH, I AM.   And it looks like it's a pretty good episode so I might watch later on this weekend after work cuz I see a lot of scenes with people I actually like. Very happy to see Rocco/Danny appear to be getting story, too.
    • I do agree that a revival of EON would work, if it doesn't fall into doing all of the typical soap opera tropes... which it became guilty of in the final few years of the show with the over abundance of Raven/Sky at the expense of the actual detectives, police, etc. And I know it was mentioned earlier that Raven had lost any true connections on the show with the death of her on screen mother, and the loss of April/Draper/Deborah.. and I do agree with that. I actually thought the show would have done something with the Shelley character that could have connected her to the Raven character.  There were a few scenes where the two would have scenes and size one another up before they would go their separate ways.. so I assumed perhaps they would have been revealed as half-siblings and/or perhaps cousins.  Alas.. not to be.
    • It definitely flowed beautifully. So much that I was annoyed when Vanessa/Doug because I wanted to get back to the party. I know it was intentional to build up tension and suspense. It worked. lol. I'm glad it was there in hingsight because it gave us that great conversation between Doug and Vanessa. Foreshadowing? And yesss!!! This episode was sooo old school soap giving beat after beat after beat leading up to the unveiling of Eva as Ted's daughter. And we still have plenty of fallout/aftereffects to work through.   Speaking of...Bill, Bill, Bill lol. Good to have confirmation HE was the scary lawyer.   I'm sure I will have a busy Monday, but I can't wait for it. I don't know what I'm looking forward to more. Probably Anita vs Silk Press Sheila tbh. And yes, I feel they will be matching each other 'blow for blow.'
    • And if they go there, it could also be tied to Johnny completely cutting him off, possibly going to work for Titan, etc.
    • @AbcNbc247 maybe it is just that they've gone to that well too often, and I don't like when DAYS goes dark, but I'm OK with EJ abusing drugs, and just skipping the whole sobriety part. Side note: experiencing hallucinations of my son killing me would be enough for me to never want to take a pill again.

    • Part of the reason that Courtney worked at OLTL was because the show had an actual character for her to play.  One that was somewhat different than her character on AW, and after the way she was treated over at AW.. it had to have been nice to be courted onto a new soap that actually valued your contributions.
    • I figured the "long" was already implied
    • You'll be very impressed
