DAYS Spinoff: Beyond Salem Discussion Thread

I think it's a number of factors with Greta not taking off.  Her bizarre introduction, her cloying nature with John and to a lesser extent Bo, her obsession with her father, having no real love interest, etc.  JM/Greta were fine, but I don't think she inspired a real fanbase.  I haven't met many people that loathed her, but I haven't met too many stans.  The consensus is everyone liked her enough, but no one is clamoring for her return.

I hated the Jack is gay, but not really story.  Like Jack be an adult just tell her you are not into her lol.

You can tell GR is also having a blast. He is such a great actor but Kevin has been so underwritten for so long now that he probably enjoys having something fun to do.

It really makes a lot of difference when the people involved are actually enjoying what they are doing. So much of what's wrong on the main show are the stories where you can tell where RC is merely checking a box ("Oh right we need to use Nicole and Rafe... Fine let's put them together") and the actors are cashing the check.

Ahhh the 90s/2000s where straight men pretending to be gay was considered the height of comedy.

I thought her and Eric was a pairing that made sense and they were cute enough. But two "sweet" characters do not a story make so there was little there.

Yeah, Eric and Greta were sweet and Nicole was fun as their spoiler but then we got Nicole/Lucas, Jensen/Eric left and they paired her with yet another 'sweet guy' in Austin. And stuck them in Eden hell.

Greta really never stood a chance, looking back.

I'd rather be watching them than the bootleg Bope wannabes the show keeps trying to force

Greta and Eric were cute.  It just never went anywhere.  Jensen left and that was it.  I liked her and Austin as well, but again that went nowhere too.  I even thought her and MA had chemistry.  She just had pairings that didn't go very far.

And Greta was definitely outshined by the other heroines her age range like Nicole/Sami-even though JM is older than I thought.

This was fun. I love how Billy starts talking about how he's not opposed to Chad/Sonny and how Sonny has nice arms, then Jackie is like, "I'm actually talking about Chad/Leo." I love how cool he is with all of it. Let's make Chad bi already, lol. I also love that he brought up how he's just in the background of the scenes laughing at Leo. I kind of figured it was more Billy himself laughing and not Chad.

Zach brought up all the comments online about Billy's ass! Hahaha.

That was a great watch. The show should do watch parties like that more often. Was nice seeing the cast joke around and talk about the scenes.

DAYS needs to get off the pot and make Chad bisexual already. Billy wants it, we want it.

Even though it probably means nothing, at the end when Zach says he has hope that WilSon will be coming to DAYS, that gave me some hope. . Almost everywhere, people are loving the Phoenix story, saying it's the first time in years they've been interested in WilSon, how great Zach is. They a popular couple that just got a huge much needed shot in the arm. They would be so stupid not to bring them back.

    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.
    • I hope it's okay to post this here(as in from DC)
    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
    • Beverlee was on a whole other level from Kim. It's not like they were in competition with each other. I get the feeling that Kim had a slight problem with the super-professional, serious cast members who just wanted everyone to be prepared and do the work, as she seems to like having fun on set. (She's made a few cracks about Chris Bernau being like that). Bev was definitely one of those. But they didn't work together that much. Yeah, they made her manic and also much weaker. She always had a vulnerability, but wanting to kill herself over that guy? No way. Not only that, he didn't leave her! She insisted he marry Maeve. When they did the tribute to Bert/Charita, the compilation of scenes with her showed how much the cast had been almost totally turned over in a relatively short period of time. Nearly every shot was of her by herself because most people she had worked with had been fired, left or been replaced. I assume they couldn't show her with people who hadn't been replaced, like Don Stewart, Elvera Roussel, or Robert Newman because they would have had to pay them for using their clips. It's dreadful to watch. Like she had no connection to the current show.
