Soaps Blandest Marginally Acceptable Leading Men

Totally agree, in my opinion the worst type of bore is a guy who inexplicably is attractive to the most interesting women in town and psychiatrists who marry their patients. I think both men were stalked because their psycho-ex-clients where just sick of waiting for an interesting response from these guys.

Even two decades ago the most interesting things about him were that he joined a cult and posed nude, but it turns out he didn't even do those things by choice, he was lured into it by the love of a woman.  Mary Williams' other kids had much more personality.

From GH to Y&R (Nina's gardener boyfriend) to Falcon Crest (Chase Gioberti), I think there is an unwritten rule that all characters named Chase are dull.

I'll disagree with this.  I thought Marston had much more presence than Stack.  Also, that scene when Michael has to identify his brother John's body with Bo after John's "death", and Michael just breaks down sobbing in Bo's arms, has stayed with me ever since.

I would contend that the fact that a detective like Paul could never solve the mystery of his disappearing father and brother proves how ineffective he is as a character(lol).

Sadly, more often that not, black male romantic leads on soaps (e.g. Eli on Days or Ben on ATWT) are written very blandly, and only the best actors would be able to inject some personality into them. And even then, they still require good writers and producers who see their potential. When Lawrence Saint-Victor started playing the much-recast Remy on GL, he was pretty bland, but the writers played to his strengths and worked with him to craft a very specific, memorable character (one who had great chemistry with both Michelle Ray Smith's Ava and Karla Mosley's Christina).

Slight correction: Liam is Mr. Goodie Two Shoes. 3-4 years ago Liam - a veggie - wanted to start his own foundation and talked a lot about his charitable ideas. It was suuuuuper boring, but the witing has always cemented these altruisctic traits as his character. Plus, he used to be techie. I agree with you to th extent - that ever sicne the show dropped Liam's apsirations for the throne of Newman Enterprises ahem Spencer Publications - he has been nothing but the magic penis. And this storyline has been going on for three + years now. Time for sth. else!

Still, he's not the blandest lead out there. That honor belongs to Y&R's Nick Newman and/or John Black on DAYS, IMO.

Liam Spencer!!!!  It never made sense for 2 women to be fighting over him.  He's a wimp and Scott can't convince us otherwise.

I would say Ethan Crane but...see above.

GV was wasted.  Liz never loved adult Lucky and Guza used GV to make his Steve Burton boner more exciting!

Add to that list Dr. Scott Grainger, Ryan McNeil, Blade, Dr. Kurt Costner. Y&R had alot of bland leading men in the 1990s.

Y&R's Chase was an executive at Jabot. I can't remember if he got an exit story or just disappeared without an explanation. Bill Bell essentially replaced Chase with Ryan.

Collateral damage from Rebecca Budig's Greenlee. He sparked with Gillian and Kendell, and was workable with Annie.

Ouch! But too true. Pretty much Mac was forgotten about post Felicia.

I disagree with Greg Vaughan. He had tremendous sexual chemistry with Kelly Monaco. Had anyone but Guza been in control of the show Lucky could have worked and been a meaningful character. However Guza had a fetish where he had to make all of the men in GH cuckold's to Jason and Sonny. All the women in Port Charles needed to want them, and the rest of the men in PC were poor slobs who should have held their wives purses and thanked Sonny and Jason for giving their women a night of passion with a "real man". You could swap any script previously written with AJ in mind and replace him with Lucky during that time period, it was just that bad. Jason was just that much better than them that any woman would prefer him.

The character of Lucky got some vengeance once JJ resumed the role, which I am thankful of - GV's Lucky under Guza's tenure was such a sad character.

Mac on GH is a good example.  When he first arrived, he did have a personality and was sexy.  But there was a period when he broke up with Felicia (during the BJ’s heart storyline), and then was so against Stone that I lost interest in him.  He became bland, had one bad pairing after another, and then became a cop in Sonny’s PC, so we knew how that was going to turn out.  They gave him plenty of stories for a long time, most of them pretty meh past 1994 or so.

Now that I have had a chance to watch some older GL, Frank is my pick for longest lasting bland soap lead-male (although Cane on Y&R is a very close second).  I liked him before and during Eleni.  But after the recast through the end of the show he is dullsville.

Now longest lasting bland soap lead- female goes to Rachel Ames as Audrey.  I love Steve Hardy, Jessie, Lesley, Diana (both versions), Gail Baldwin.  All of them her contemporaries and all infinitely more interesting and entertaining to me.  I don’t hate her, I even enjoy rarely seeing her once every few years.  But she has be never been a character I cared to follow.

    • It's shocking to see Steffy look down on anyone. She was the new generation HO for years. I mean... she was nasty and using sex to seduce married-engaged-in-relationship-men all the time. She was embracing it fully. Bradley was accenting on the fact that Taylor's daughter had become Brooke 2. I remember how disgusting it was when she was using Hope's virginity to her advantage and offering to f-ck the guys that wanted Hope. It was ABSURDLY nasty.  Then couple of years ago Bradley decided we should forget about it and made Steffy BECOME her grandmother. IN AN INSTANT. There was no build up to it. Which aged the f-ck out the character and made her unbearable. Because it's one thing to see an actual matriarch, older woman doing these things, being a moral judge... but it's complete joke to see the ex-ho acting like this. Ex-ho that is still incredibly young and has no right acting like she is better that anyone or... a moral JUDGE. Steffy and Hope's personalities got swapped!!! That's the irony of it. So any time these gang-style of fans come attacking Hope... for acting like a "slut"... I pinch myself - their HEROINE Steffy was doing this HARCORE. Are these people oblivious or just pretending not to remember. How can you stan a moral judge... that attacks "sluts" and also stan the same type of behavior you are attacking... years ago. How does this happen. But I repeat myself at this point.  I agree with everything you said 100000 percent. It's the truth. At least in my eyes.
    • The Amanda pregnancy was a blunder. Amanda and Sam were AW's best bet for a starcrossed supercouple. Young love destined to be turn apart by outside forces and misunderstandings . Battling for years to finally get together. Instead AW had them married and pregnant within a year.
    • It is his fatal flaw.  He's smart, cute, and loyal.  But, a total chauvinist pig.  We're looking through a 2025 lens, but April's from a wealthy family, (that she recently met), she should be allowed to contribute to her own home. Especially if Draper is going to work for the Crime Commission, rather than joining Mike's private law firm (did I get that part correct?) How about smoking while the baby is in the room?  It all looks nuts by current standards. Raven was married to Geraldine's son Kevin, but had an affair with Logan (whom Geraldine also considered like a son). Raven got pregnant by Logan, then Kevin died (long story short).  The part you need to know is that Raven was bored being a mother to Jamey (check out my member name).  So, she starts going out to Elliott's club and leaving Jamey with April.  Logan is not happy that Raven keeps leaving their baby all around town.  And thus, Geraldine is not pleased with Raven either. Draper and Logan are frequently rivals in the courtroom.  FYI --- Draper is also Raven's step-brother (her mother married his father). Raven's real name is Charlotte. But, one day [she] was sitting on the lawn and saw this beautiful black bird with shiny wings fly by. [She] wanted to be that bird. So beautiful. So free. With beautiful black wings…"    @chrisml you'll hear that story soon, and I envy you getting to see it the first time.
    • There is a time... till the old storyline is cleaning up... where it's still kinda annoying. For me it was. That's a personal opinion. But in 10-20 episodes more... you'll find yourself enthralled. It's not even begun. I'm so glad to hear your reviews! And excited of what's to come for you!
    • Carly also has Nikki (Nicholas) with Lawrence. The easiest way to remember Chelsea is to think about how she was buried, stillborn, premature in a swamp and came back to life.  Or you can just remember her running over Bo/Hope's kid Zack.  Kind of ballsy to name her kid Issac if you ask me lol.
    • That's right Anita! Let her have it!

    • This is my other blind spot -- the children of Bo Brady's past loves.  Melanie:Carly as Chelsea:Billie -- but it is tough to keep them straight I dipped out during the Daniel of our Lives period of the show.
    • Yeah.  Let's just move on and talk about Jagger....lol 100% agree on the Sonny situation.  Mostly because I want Sonny to get a murder charge so he can just go live on an island with Brenda. I think Tracy did do a lot to explain Jason's perspective on AJ's murder.  I truly think that's how Jason justifies it in his own head. I don't think he was lying about his feelings.  They are just wrong.
    • I will never get over Sonny killing a fed in cold blood and everyone just shrugging when it wasn’t Alexis.    And then last week you had Jason white washing Sonny murdering AJ in cold blood to Gio.
    • I thought it was impolite to stare directly at the car crash.  Consider it like polite cocktail chatter while our hosts bicker in the kitchen
