GH to air "classic" episodes

This is almost satire. They have to know that a large portion of lapsed viewers associate the show’s downfall with the rise of Sonny so they’re just spitting in our face because they can.

Do we know if the show has saved any of the episodes from the 60s to the mid-70s? Has ABC always owned GH? It would be great to see the early days of Dr. Steve, Nurse Jessie, Audrey and her sister Lucille, Lee Baldwin, etc...

Sonny and Carly aside, it was great to see a pre Frank episode yesterday

From what I’ve heard, most episodes from the first seven years are archived, but the early to mid 70s is really spotty

They had so much from the 50th on Soapnet.  If they are going to do best of Sonny actually do the best of Sonny which was obviously pre-2000.  They dug good episodes out for Brenda's return too.  I am not sure what the issue is.  I get they have these pre-packaged sets already that they released on ABC.com, but at some point they are going to have to seek some older episodes I think.

Yes. Though it led to Alan’s death, which was the biggest mistake GH ever made, the story itself was great. You’d never see a storyline like it on GH nowadays. The whole crisis is posted on YouTube

I'll definitely check it out. I've heard it mentioned so often on here that I wasn't sure if it was being overblown or not. I haven't really watched GH since 2006, but I see the Metro Court stuff happened shortly after I stopped watching.

As stated by others- it was a near perfect sweeps event.  They crisis itself just happened- no backstory needed.  While it was exciting, they actually took the time to explore the relationships of the characters during the event.

The sad part is that they chose to kill off Alan Quartermaine.  Which was heartbreaking.

I just looked at the ratings and GH did really well that sweeps period. It even had 2 weeks above 4 million viewers and big increases from the year before. Actually, most of the soaps were doing really well in those last weeks of Jan. and early Feb. 2007. GL was also doing well in comparison. Too bad I can't remember what was going on

I wonder if that was the last time all the soaps had gains like these for sweeps, until the resurgence in late 2012-2013 when they were all hitting numbers they hadn’t seen since the mid 2000’s?

For the most part, these GH classic episodes are duds.

i find myself playing the “Look at how short his hair is” and “God, she’s gained a lot of weight since then,” and “Gee, he had big bags under his eyes even then.”

The Nurses Ball eps were fun for a couple days, then...just no. How many Wally Kurth songs can one sit through? Those singing kids were pretty awful. Oh, and that Maura West solo S&M performance was just flat out embarrassing.

    • There are no dumb questions here, we've all known each other long enough to fill in information without shaming each other.  We want you to be happy @carolineg.  Your POV as one of the few women here is vital. So, please, I hope you never feel as if any question, idea, or opinion is ever silly or stupid.  Your daily reminders about the realities of manicure and menstrual management has become a part of the personality of this thread. As for Hank, while I'm confident there's a plan in place.  It is frustrating that they announce these casting so far in advance that it is tough as an audience and wait it out until the thing happens.  I'm happy they didn't blow it the second Mike was in town, a week after meeting Liam. So, it is a slow burn.
    • I think his full name is Chadwick.  I remember, back when the previous actor was playing him, someone called him Chadwick a couple of times.  It may have been Stefano.
    • I didn't like those two sleeping together, but I suuure liked seeing BF in them. Wiggle and all. Just sad about the waxing of the chest.   Same.
    • It’s strange. I wonder if the writers at that time had worked with him somewhere else and had a relationship? That time is murky AF to find info on. Rachel Ames in effect left the show at one point in the early 80’s and she is credited like she was there until JFP. Tristan Rogers also took various contract breaks that were not short, and websites also credit him one long stint from 1981-1992. So many people come and go in short succession in 1982-part of 1983. I know they lost a lot of viewers when Genie left, but the show somehow survived yearly at number one through like sheer force of will.
    • In that way, at least we were fortunate.  The Daniel Pilon/Ron Raines decisions...not so much.
    • Letting Brennan put it in yet again while smirking over his shoulder... any day now! She's got him just where she wants him! I do think ol' Jack will be dead by February at the absolute latest. They have set him up as a counter-heavy to Sidwell, forcing poor Joss to work his next scheme or threatening to have her sent down for treason. Once he croaks I still deeply fear we will be subject to Valentin and Carly, partners in crime to lovers, possibly out to find out 'who killed Jack'. Anna was at her best keeping Sonny at arm's length and often somewhat cold, which she only really did (for better or worse) off and on during Carlivati's tenure. But Finola gradually got too emotional over Sonny, Jason, etc. and was allowed to do that onscreen too much long ago. Mulcahey brought some of that steel back, though Finola still managed to choke or quietly sob through some of that material as Anna found her way there lol. She's a brilliant actress and she did a good job with that stuff in '24, but now we're back to the same old and it humiliates the character whether she knows it or not.
    • Listen, I am all for Laura Wright wearing silly wigs and glasses if there was a point.  So far she's just been nice to Brennan and made out with him.  How evil lol!!  Even though I have been told Brennan loves her the writing was never there.  It's so low stakes.  Carly should maybe talk to her daughter and have an adult conversation instead. Laura and Anna look foolish.  I really don't have an issue with either being friendly or at least having some affection for Sonny.  I don't get both of them wanting to have a parade to announce how much they love him and how valuable the friendship is.  C'mon, Laura basically tolerated Sonny because of Luke until Lulu/Dante got together.  Anna likes Sonny because Robin did?  There really isn't much more of a reason for Anna to give him the time of day besides that.  They aren't lifelong buddies.
    • It is so dumb and is dragging on already after a couple weeks. By the time Carly wraps this up Joss will be running the local branch office. And yes, Laura deserves better. It's like they tripled down on this Sonny apologia stuff with her and Anna after the Mulcahey saga.
