If You all want to know  more about COVID, The Vaccines and Omicron, I highly suggest following this twitter account: sailorrooscout

They work with vaccines and their explanation is easy to follow

Exactly. Yes COVID 19 will always be here but if more were responsible maybe we could be at that point where it operates like the flu and we can move from Pandemic to endemic

Please remember that South Africa's population is much younger than the U.S. and Europe's populations, so the criteria and results may not be exactly applicable. In fact, the African continent tends to have a younger population overall. Now, if milder symptoms turn out to be the main in Europe, which has an older population, that may have more correlation to the U.S., which has more in common demographically.

Indeed. I am holding out hope that this will be a much milder 'flu' variant than its predecessors (especially given that my younger brother has it), but we won't really know until maybe the end of the month and going into January. Hopefully

the number of hospital admissions and deaths stays low, even as infections rise.

For reference: median population age in South Africa (2020) = 27.6 years.

Western Europe = 43.9 years.

UK = 40.4 years.

US (2019) = 38.1 years.

Another aspect to consider is that the South African population has had a different level of exposure to previous coronavirus variants (Delta, in particular) than the U.S. and Europe that had much greater access to vaccines than South Africa. Exposure, coupled with a population that skews younger may yield different results, just to keep in mind.

I have read that the U.K. reported its first death from the Omicron variant. Hopefully that will remain a rare report.

True. South Africa's population may have stronger immunity from their Delta wave (if they caught it) because it happened more recently than our vaccination rollouts in the northern hemisphere. So some may have relatively higher immunity compared with our waning levels. This is why the booster is so important.

I hope so, too, because this thing is noticeably more contagious.

Also in the US, patches of the US spared from Delta's reach (Northeast especially) are getting hit pretty hard from Delta and Omricon variants the last few weeks.

The places in the US to see if recent immunity from Delta will provide some protection from a huge Omricon surge will be places like Texas (I was moving from Austin when Delta cases were sky high during the summer), Mississippi, Florida, etc.

Lastly, if we truly were following the science...we would have foreseen mutations coming....and helped lower to mid income countries with vaccines, medical supplies, etc.

The tweet said "My god this doctor’s Reddit post".  The tweet disappeared but its Reddit link still works.

My god. Other posters verified that the OP was legit. What a horrible thing to happen to that doctor.

The fact that there even needs to be a subReddit called "QAnonCasualties" full of such experiences is such a sad signifyer of what's happened in the world.

Horrible. And, I follow that sub and it’s crazy. There’s a worse one though called QultHeadquarters.

Well. Omicron has made it’s way to the city next to mine. So, there’s no way in hell it isn’t here. I’ve become a hermit basically. But, my parents still have doctors appointments to go to and that makes me nervous. We are all triple vaxxed and wear masks...But, seems like Omicron don’t give a rat’s behind.
