I agree! Seems the only catty female moments they do well are re: Hillary. With the others, it's like junior high.

Just saw Friday's show and now JT is killing Victor. The writing by Mal is just horrible.

Well.....part of it would be great if Victor actually died because of JT.

It will never happen. I think everyone knows that so why do the ridiculous plot.

That poster has little use for difference of opinions it seems.

Maybe the answer might be for someone to start a Cheerleading Thread.  I'm not trying to be condescending or anything, I'm serious.

There are some sites (I won't name them) where people start threads to praise what they like about the show.  Those threads are effusive in praise and are non-critical.

In the Cheerleading Thread, people can offer effusive, non-critical comments, leaving the Discussion threads for discussion and deconstruction of writing technique and story ideas, execution, etc.

Talk about an about-face in record time for Devon/Hilary.  Last week they were making a baby together and today, Condescending Devon shows up.    Due to what Hilary told day player Simone.  GMAFB.  And how in the fvck is Devon getting the agreement thrown out over this bs?

I see the beginnings of Sharon/Nick/Phyllis.  Ugh.

The Devon and Hillary merry go round really does neither character any favors. The chemistry between the two actors isn't enough to get over this [!@#$%^&*]-tastic tired writing they get every-other episode.

I’m finishing the week up and these scenes between Nikki and Jill are some of the worst. This made up feud is silly and the way they’re written and most of the older women via Mal is very one dimensional and childish. It’s clearly sexist that the older women are all written as jokes but Jack and Victor are still allowed to be powerful and desirable. Also, how do you have a tribute to Katherine and send her granddaughter out of town the day before?

On the subject of the abuse story being an almost exact copy of another, the biggest problem is not a domestic abuse story but the fact that it makes no sense for the characters. It only makes sense now that we know they’re trying to recreate a prime time show. That’s why it didn’t make sense. There were ways to successfully tell the story but that wasn’t t heir goal.

I thought the writing and acting was pretty stilted in that Katherine scene, but it was amusing just the same. It actually reminded me of one of those outdoor GL scenes in the later years. Good point on the Mackenzie oversight! It didn't take me out of the scene, but it would have been much appreciated to have her there.

I like having Thad Luckinbell back. He's a smart guy and is playing the same game Justin Hartley did. This abuse story has been pretty well done and I gotta commend Amelia Heinle, she's doing great work. I buy it being sold as JT having gone through loss and life failures turning him into the man he is now. Its being very tastefully done for daytime so kudos to Mal Young who has made the show infinitely more watchable IMO.

I liked having Brittany, Raul, and a Mac back as well. One of Daytime's biggest mistakes was running that generation of soap characters off their shows because of bad recasts and tired ran through stories (Days with the Last Blast crew, GH with the Liz/Lucky/Emily/Nikolas group). Would have been nice to have Ash Bash but I enjoyed Kelly Krueger. She was more than serviceable and I wouldn't seeing her in the role again consistently. If it had been Rachel Kimsey (who I didn't mind then but she was so blah, to think she almost got to play Victoria) or Cybill Shepard's kid I would have been like  for every scene.

Mishael Morgan is a certified star  and Mal clearly recognizes her worth. I know some of you have issues with how she's used but I'm just appreciative to have a black actress who's good on her own and not just attached to a white man or because of her ambiguity, being utilized so much. Her scenes with Kyle and Simone (I'm :wub:ing her addition as well, maybe ditch the singing but she's more tolerable than Reed or Wednesday Addams) were great.

Speaking of Kyle, I like this version. He's got actual personality and presence unlike the last three (only one I liked before was the Leno Chin one and JFP dumped him right when he got interesting). I buy his vendetta against Jack who's always been a distant father (they don't even pretend he knows who Keemo is  ). I love that he fired Gloria and Ashley didn't care

This Jack in prison story definitely doesn't have the highlight it would for an Eric Braeden BTW, but that old mans sitting in a coma so who's really winning currently?  Melody Thomas Scott at least is getting the Arturo cheating and fighting with Jess Walton though, their scenes today were great.

I'm loving Sharon/Nick/Phyllis being involved again and the maintaining of Phyllis and Jack.

Lily and Cane are useless. Melissa Ordway was missed while on maternity leave and she's fit back seamlessly. Glad we're finally rid of that horrid Scott recast too.

Overall I like the place the show is in currently. I don't really feel like commenting on it much though because its more entertaining for me that way.

I don't blame you. I watch the show, come here and immediately it's a wave of depression lol. Reminds me of Toronto sports fan. Fanbase tends to be the team's own worst enemy at times lol

I definitely agree with much of what you said.

And how great were those scenes with Sharon/Victoria today? Sharon Case has been rocking!

I’m glad you enjoyed it, my opinion is different from yours and it’s valid. I have high standards for what I expect as someone who has been watching this show almost my entire life. If you enjoy the endless plot holes and out of character moments that’s on you.

There is a way to show other sides to a character in a way thats smart, funny and makes sense. I don’t see that from Mal’s Y&R

See, this is just uncalled for. We cannot call out others for the constant complaining about the show, but by all means everyone else is ready with daggers to tell us how wrong we are. At the end of the day, Y&R is a business. Mal takes his orders from upstairs and has to adjust accordingly for ratings. It's not like a decade or 2 ago.

I think we all have high standards and want to see the show do well. However, Y&R has changed a lot over it's tenure (some good times, some bad times). I'm thankful we have long-time vets LEADING stories, and doing a great job. Things feel fresh. I'm not excited by all the changes, but for the most part the show has been good. The constant wave of negativity and looking for minute things to complain about gets tiresome (just as I'm sure some find my defending it tiresome lol).

Can you imagine having friends who were critical all the time? I'd quickly move on. It becomes just as stale, boring and repetitive as the cheerleading. It all becomes too toxic when you take an extreme on either side (just like the state of affairs in the USA). There are too many things to complain about, I look at Y&R for a bit of escape. I'm not looking for doppelgängers. I'm looking for good acting and at least decent writing.

The sad thing is the character is a virtual blank slate and would be easy to write for, especially if they'd free him of his exclusivity with Jabot and have him freelance.  Maybe Kyle decides that Jabot's systems are working well and that they don't need him full-time (over Phyllis and Lauren's objections) and lets him out of his contract, that would allow the character to work with different companies and interact with different characters.  Ashley hears about this and wants him to do some work for NE (I mean, JT's not there anymore, is he ) provided he sign a confidentiality contract.

Phyllis and Hilary are having lunch at the GCAC and they spot Ravi sitting alone and Phyllis recounts what happened to Ravi.  Phyllis, sends a waiter to Ravi's table to pick up the tab.  Ravi stops by to offer his gratitude and says that he has decided to freelance and will be doing some contract work for Jabot but he's still nervous about the paycut that he will be taking.  Phyllis mentions that the development that Nick, Jack, Devon et al., are working on may have need for his services and promises to ask Nick about it.  Ravi is grateful.

Meanwhile HWG's streaming service has a crisis--some sort of backdoor data breach or illegal downloads and when she overhears Devon complain about dissatisfaction with the outsourcing company handling the streaming's interweb, etc. They've gotten a hold of some of Simone's practice demos and are putting them out there.  Simone is mortified, Devon is worried.  When Hilary discovers this, she considers the fact that Simone could leave town with her tail tucked between her legs, ridding Hilary her of Simone but considers the damage that could be done to the company and suggests Ravi to come in and fix the problem.  That could also put Ravi and Simone in each other's orbit, if any cares.  That's what I came up with off the top of my head.  If I had time to think it out, I'd like have something better in mind.

As you shouldn't.  When I started watching as a child in the mid-late 80s, Dina wasn't much on the scene.  I remember Joanna, I even vaguely recall Neil Fenmore (albeit not much), but I haven't the slightest recollection of Dina and Joanna interacting while I was a viewer.

We know that these soap writers love their retcons and don't give the slightest hoot whether it actually happened.  Regardless of whether it happened or not, they'll write it into being with no consideration of past history.  As much as Lauren used to interact with the Abbott's (she and Jack briefly dated), one would think that if their mothers couldn't stand one another, that would've been an issue.

Still, it would've been interesting if Joanna did show up and had no earthly idea why Dina was showing her such contempt and perhaps admits that their interactions were very limited.

Still, like you, I don't trust Mal's pen to have any sort of nuance or delicate touch.  He, similar to Pratt, tends to wield a sledgehammer more than a pen.

 Thanks fir the details

Hilary is Junior High School as well. Very petty stuff all over canvas with every woman. Its almost a given that if you see two women in the scene together, the purpose is for them to be mean and snarky with each other.

Except Sharon! Sally did a great job fixing her and it seems Mal hasn't decided to screw it up.

Did anyone else notice that it looked like Hilary had a prescription bag in her hand in today's episode. I wonder if it had prenatal vitamins it. Also, I wonder what she was drinking at the bar.  Maybe a soda? It had a lime in it.

I still wonder if Hilary is already pregnant. She did look very upset today after Devon told her their plan to have a baby is off. I wonder if she looked that way because he doesn't want to try anymore OR she's already pregnant by him and she's not sure what to do now.  Granted he did mention the deal could still be on if "she's already pregnant", but maybe she might still be nervous to tell him about that after the way he talked to her.

+1

And even she spends much of her time going back and forth with Phyllis  over Nicholas.

Hilary's entire purpose for writers is manipulating and scheming. If she's already pregnant, then she has nothing to do. The show can't have that. So, my prediction is Hilary is not pregnant so that she can lie, cheat, scheme, manipulate to become so. That's the point of the story.

Oh yeah, and that was water with lime  at that bar. She asked Devon to order it before she went to the bathroom. I'm sure she took a pregnancy test.

I never said your opinion wasn’t valid. You have high standards? Uh...doesn’t mean that I don’t. My disagreement with you doesn’t mean I “enjoy endless plot holes and out of character moments.”

I realize you don’t agree with me,  If my tone upset you, I apologize, but I don’t think your tone is exactly fan-friendly.

“That poster” is me. Apparently I’ve bothered you — again.

I don’t care if others disagree with me. I don’t expect anyone to agree with me. All I did was offer my opinion, which differed from Chris’. That’s it. I thought that was permissible and expected on a forum discussion.

I’d be glad to hear your opinion about Y&R and why you disagree with me. I’m not so interested in your shade and snark.

StepBack, I agree with a great deal of what you’ve said.

I’m critical about a many elements of Y&R, but it’s still the best soap on the air, and there’s a lot to be happy about these, although at times it’s difficult to tell that from this board. Criticism about everything — all the time — is tiring to read, at least for me. Sometimes I just need to weigh in with a “You know, things are not all that bad.”
