Ah Christmas Eve is upon us again.

Been a tough year in Soapland with losing so many icons and legends. Yet we were also blessed with show renewals, Knots Landing streaming, and Beyond the Gates.

Going to spend some time taking nostalgic trips to Genoa City, Oakdale, and Springfield tomorrow. Hoping to make new Christmas memories in Fairmont Estates this time next year.

Thanks @soapfan770

Happy Holidays to you too, and to everybody here on SON!

And you’re right. With all the losses, the messy transitions between writers, and the hastily written and poorly written rewrites, this was not a good year for the soaps at all.

But with Beyond the Gates coming, Ron finally being fired and Days celebrating its 60th anniversary, I couldn’t be happier that we, as soap fans, have so much to look forward to in 2025.

Yeah 2024 has been a double edged sword for daytime. Y&R got a 4 year renewal and Ed Scott back, but Griffith and Kent are still in charge. GH fans had their hopes raised and then crushed with the Patrick Mulcahey debacle. Ron was fired months ago yet his material is still airing and now Fake Rafe is back from the dead…? B&B keeps going further down into a bottomless pit. But it is nice to know daytime is not dead and we do have some much to look forward to in 2025.

Thank you as always!

@soapfan770 Thank you for tagging me and for your beautiful statements. As someone who thought GH and DAYS would be gone by the mid/late '10s, I am glad they are still around (and even though I can't say I'm a fan of what they now are I still ended up being more involved in conversation about them than I have been in a while), and I'm glad four soaps somehow managed to survive to welcome a fifth. I genuinely never thought that was possible. I am not going to try to have hope about what the future holds but ideally Beyond the Gates will do well enough to bring more shows or at least get the perpetually terrified and out of date genre to take a few more risks.

The staggering amount of soap losses this year likely were the main thing we will remember, and I'm glad I had this place to help remember and honor them.

My soap highlight this year was the amount of new vintage soap content. A few more '50s soap episodes appeared, a soap channel that lived for a month or two provided some exceedingly rare content for AMC, Loving and ATWT, some Y&R glimmers, a few late '80s/early '90s ATWT episodes appeared, a few 1985 Search episodes that had been sought after and the most shocking find, Ariana Munker's clips of her AW run. I devoured every moment of those scenes as I never thought we'd get any more Lemay AW

Thanks to @slick jones and others, I also gained much more awareness and curiosity in cast lists this year, and tracing the often fascinating careers of actors who may have just played a nail tech in one episode 40 years ago.

There's no real lost media community for soaps - you won't get the type of discussion or investigation that you will get over a Spongebob screensaver from 1999. That makes it all the more remarkable when some fragment stumbles online. Soap fans are often treated as ungrateful, but we all treasure those small moments. May 2025 have many more of them.

Thank you all again for giving me a place to look forward to every day. Merry Christmas.

And danfling, rest in peace.

    • Just thinking how the Ruth/Leticia guest spot really cemented how Days had changed. Stunt casting with a campy/comedy character in a 'wacky' storyline was something that a few years previously would have been completely out of place on Days (and most other soaps for that matter).
    • I am interested to see how they handle Leslie/Dana down the road. If she continues in this path, it would be unrealistic to have her around. Like other shows have done this with a 'villian' character and ended up with people looking stupid putting up with someone they detest. Another thought-could they be building up to a murder story? Maybe Les/Dan will be left in a coma and we will have a whodunit with several characters as suspect. It would also be a chance to redeem her I wonder how long the show will go w/o resorting to soap cliche stories-twins,switched at birth, murder mystery, long lost child etc
    • Yeah, Martin really did make me laugh when him and Smitty jumped up to drag Leslie out. I am interested in seeing how this fallout will impact his storyline as well. Especially since he is so protective regarding his family/family's image. I am interested in seeing how he will interact with Eva for the time being, they did have a warmer interaction earlier on once they met. But he seems to have doubts about her possibly being Ted's right now. I wonder how long it might take for him to come around with her. I could see the younger generation warming up to her quicker than the older ones. Though of course I think there will be anger/tension for a while regarding the reveal and her role in it. Perhaps Naomi/Chelsea will ease up on Eva first then eventually Martin/Kat might down the line. I really do love Nicole. I'm glad that DD is playing her. She really is the heart of the family and also agree the show. She is so easy to root for and I'm looking forward to seeing how things work out for her. I am enjoying the development of most of the characters on this show. I enjoy most of them including Bill with his trifling self lol. I do feel that Bill's love for his daughters is genuine and that gives him some depth. A few of the characters I don't care for that much (like Bill, Ashley, Vanessa). I wasn't too big on Andre at first, but I am warming up more to him as the actor is settling into the role. I like most of the characters on this show. Also, I am interested in seeing what happens if Eva indeed goes and lives with the new doctor that was introduced. I could see this adding another layer to her story, maybe she will become more vixen-ish, on what type of relationship they end up having. And/or maybe she will end up becoming more hardened as she deals with being an outcast, especially if she falls out with Leslie as well. I think that AM will do a good job of showcasing the different layers of this character as she deals with the fallout of the affair/paternity reveal.

Got another sad news from the Bahamian community (not a celebrity)  https://www.instagram.com/p/DJMSrYCgyes/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Former Bahamian Senate President J Henry Bostwick, Husband of former 1st Bahamian Female Cabinet Minister Dame Janet Bostwick is dead yesterday on his 86th birthday.    Thanks and for those who've aren't familiar with the talk shows in The Bahamas on this thread here, his talk show named The Freedom March with Dr Rodney Moncur that airs on ILTV and The Beat 103.5 FM Nassau every weekday afternoons. IIRC, he suffered a illness before he died.  Here's the link for his final taping of the show before his death: https://ewnews.com/this-is-powerful-rodney-moncurs-final-sign-off/

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
