As The World Turns Discussion Thread

We were discussing this in the thread about The Gates, that it would be a nice overture to long time supporters of P&G soaps if they could do something like what B&B did with classic episodes of their soap, or even have a dedicated YouTube channel for ATWT clips (and one for GL, EON), maybe even put up episodes sometime.

In Development means that a project is past the initial stage of pitch and planning, agreements have likely been drawn up and inked. From what I’ve read, a story Bible is being written. Michele Val Jean has left her job at B&B to work full-time on developing this soap. One point that needs to be remembered is that The Gates is not solely a P&G production, CBS partnering with the NAACP in conjunction with P&G. I am not even sure how much direct involvement P&G will have, especially if CBS is steering this show. I don’t know whether we can expect P&G to have any of the creative or production control that they have traditionally had with their soaps previously, I get the sense that CBS will have a bigger role this time around. And CBS is serious about this soap, or they wouldn’t have partnered with the NAACP. They know that Black women are a huge part of the viewing audience for their daytime soaps over the decades, even though they haven’t been serviced by the stories or content, so they know this is their opportunity to reciprocate on that. If they back out, they will risk alienating a huge part of their audience.

What I really find to be the saddest part of the lack of an official social media presence for this soap—there’s nowhere to celebrate the alumni we love. If P&G had the grace to get an intern to even put up a dedicated YouTube channel, shift all those ATWTs clips that are buried in CBS’ YouTube channel and migrate them to an As The World Turns YouTube channel, that would be a big improvement. Just imagine if there had been one, it would be so special to see a clip of Bob Hughes giving the Thanksgiving toast and fans could wish Don Hastings a Happy Birthday. It’s really a shame that there’s nothing like this.

An intern at P&G could at the very least, upload those episodes that the people at Soap Classics already digitized.

It's just a wish and a hope...geez. I think we all know there's zero chance that P&G will do anything with their library. They've always been the last to come to any kind of pop culture wave. They've probably just learned about a little channel called "Hallmark".

I think people are just hopeful... And hope dies last... I truly believe that one day a lot more soaps will be online... even if just uploaded by fans.

I never said anyone should just stop posting about the show. We all do that about all the shows. Our memories. Our favorite moments (well...some of us. For many posters, it seems to only be about everything they hated about every soap.)

It's a very select few members who keep asking over and over why the P&G soaps aren't being released. As I said, it's obvious: P&G doesn't care about its backlog - if any of it still exists. They don't have even have a soap opera division and haven't for 14 years, for crying out loud!

Yes, yes, CBS is producing a new soap and has approached P&G but, as others have speculated, they're probably not going to have any say in The Gates. They more than likely were approached by CBS for money to sponsor the soap and P&G will be able to get free or highly discounted ads during the show.

@Althea Davis I'm with you in hoping more soaps end up online and, like you, I think it'll only come from the fans if people discover old VHS tapes.

Yes. Kenickie was not a good fit for B&B
    • I've always wondered who was writing the projections from February to July. And why they weren't credited as head writer.
    • If Barbara overdosed on pills then I definitely think it could possibly be construed as an accident. Otherwise then I don't really see it. It could also be likely that Barbara was just simply forgotten about and faded into obscurity because she was left behind and it was the other Articulettes that became famous.  Also what I meant by earth-shattering was that Ted and Nicole's marriage is on the rocks and Martin, Kat and Nicole still haven't really fully forgiven Ted for what happened. Then again, maybe I'm just being a bit hyperbolic. I mean, Nicole still hasn't even decided whether or not she wants to file for divorce and actually I'm kind of surprised that subject has not been broached upon yet.
    • Once again, Giovanni Mazza killed it. He's got a bright future ahead of him, and hopefully GH doesn't lose him as quickly as they lost Nick Chavez. And once again, Emma spoke for all of us. They really need to establish a stronger friendship between her and Trina. And, I'd find that the custody battle would be a lot more interesting if it involved characters that I actually liked  Clearly, the WSB needed a new honeypot, and who better than Joss

      I think we're all glad
    • Schenkel was a disaster despite being a nice guy. The show was doing fine I thought (and watched live) under Culliton/Tomlin but Schenkel dismantled the writing team and proceeded to oversee a merry go round for several months until they brought in Sam Hall to collaborate with Spencer.  Here's the writer changes from the AW homepage (fairly accurate too although Tomlin remained on the head writing team at least through mid February if not a little longer) Richard Culliton and Gary Tomlin, July 1984 - January 1985 (In 1984, with Linda Elstad, Joe LeSueur, Lloyd Gold, Gary Tomlin, David Cherrill, Carolyn DeMoney Culliton, Judith Donato, Samuel D. Ratcliffe, Frances Myers, Roger Newman, Judith Pinsker, Cynthia Saltzman, and Warren Hite) (In 1985, with David Cherill, Carolyn Demoney Culliton, Judith Donato, Samuel D. Ratcliffe, Frances Myers, Roger Newman, Judith Pinsker, and Stephen Wardwell) Gary Tomlin, January 1985 (With Samuel D. Ratcliffe and Gillian Spencer; Richard Culliton, Carolyn DeMoney Culliton, Judith Donato, David Cherill, Judith Pinsker, Frances Myers, Roger Newman, Lloyd Gold, Cynthia Saltzman, and Elizabeth Levin) No headwriter, February 1985 - July 1985 (With Samuel D. Ratcliffe, Gillian Spencer, Caroline Franz, David Cherrill, Judith Donato, Richard Culliton, Fran Myers, Roger Newman, Carolyn DeMoney Culliton, James W. Kearns, Elizabeth Tooker, Peter Brash, and Ted Kubiak) Sam Hall and Gillian Spencer, August 1985 - March 1986 (In 1985 with Jan Hartman, Elizabeth Tooker, Peter Brash, David Cherill, Richard Culliton, Frances Myers, Roger Newman, Carolyn DeMoney Culliton, Todd Kessler, and Eric Rubinton) (In 1986 with Peter Brash, David Cherrill, Barbara A. Morgenroth, Fran Myers, Roger Newman, Carolyn DeMoney Culliton, Todd Kessler, Elizabeth Wallace, Donna Pode, John Boni, Penelope Koechl, Elizabeth Tooker, and Richard Culliton)
    • Finally got to the Thorne switchover in 1989. OG Thorne's drunk acting in his last episode was pretty awful. For a second I wondered if the performance was so bad Bill Bell felt he had no choice but to recast ASAP....until I remembered he was fine with letting Terri Ann Lynn vacantly shriek her lines for 2 1/2 years with no problem. Crazy that if SON was around in 1989 there might be a debate if Ron Moss was the 2nd best Forrester actor, rather than being the worst actor in daytime. Lauren Koslow finally had some decent material in August/September. Seeing Margo briefly interact with Stephanie & Caroline made the actress come alive. It seemed when the show started, she was there to mix it up with the power players, instead of being stuck on the B team with Kristin, Clarke & Mick (was the casting notice for this part a Kale Brown-type doing a Christopher Walken impression?). Anyway, the way Bill Bell wrote for her makes one appreciate James E. Reilly. Bobbie Eakes was a very pleasant surprise. I haven't had too much exposure to the character before. She was confident and watchable from day 1. I guess Rocco and Nick fell in love and left LA together offscreen.

I was praying this pool set would retire... but nope. We're stuck with it for another agonising summer. LordT help us.
    • I wonder if Anita stole the spotlight at Barbara’s funeral in the same way Ms. Ross did when she arrived to Florence Ballard’s funeral in this over the top ensemble with cameras focused on her.

    • Justice for Tracy, Sharon and Barbara! Anita is the real villian and she shouldnt be painted as the victim. The Articulettes was the dream of Barbara who founded them only for Anita to steal the group and throw them away when she was done using them for her come up.One of the worse things you can do to a person is ruin their reputation and Anita was complicit in having Tracy and Sharon basically trashed and blackballed, thus ruining any chance they had of bouncing back   I wondr if the public think Barbara's death was an accident but the sad reality is, she is likely forgotten as an unknown footnote in the Articulettes origin story.   Anita didnt do anything that would warrant jail time but she should suffer. I hope this story is really a redemption one for Sharon and Tracy whom have their names cleared and they are able to be celebrated and have their accomplishments to music history recognized on a grand stage. Right now, this has all been about elevating Anita's own self and reliving her on glory. She needs to take a back seat and do right by those women and honor Barbara's legacy. She's a part of black history and Anita erased her

    • -- Good to see the (wading) pool set return, but they really need to do something with the static landscape outside those large windows. It looks so fake. -- Joss showing up at the pool because she's "working with" Dalton is all kinds of hilarious. Te WSB is special LOL -- Was Joss late for her court appearance because she was strutting around the pool in high heels and a bikini? Make it make sense. -- Alexis moves from one "She can do 30 years for this" storyline to another. What a lawyer. -- Maurice Benard had another really bad day. He's clearly reading cue cards in every scene and spends a ton of time looking at the ground. When everyone in the Gio story is making a pilgrimage to visit him like he's the Godfather, that's a problem. -- I am glad that Gio is going to the pool tomorrow.
