Looking back, the show certainly was in the middle of a high period while JFP was around. Yes, it was a HUGE mistake to kill Maureen, but most of the other things she had a hand in were pretty good.

Certainly better than that horrible 1977 story that brought Bill Bauer back from the dead, filleted him, and then ushered him right back out of town when he should have stayed put and taken Papa Bauer's place alongside Bert. What was the point of bringing Ed Bryce back for that travesty? Bill may have had more than his fair share of weaknesses, but in reading all I could about the Bauers, he always read like a well-meaning, good-hearted, decent man and neither he nor Bert realized they were incompatible until after they were married.

Does anyone remember Bill's reaction to Bert's surprising reaction to his affair with Maggie Scott? From everything I've read, it was supposedly a turning point for Bill and Bert and things got a little better between them.

I posted an interview with Ed Bryce a while back, from when he was leaving GL again, and he seemed bewildered by the writing choices. I know there was a lot of fan anger over the story and Bill's behavior, that may have cut the story short.

I think Jill did love GL, her vision of GL, I just think she should have had people working with her who could offer a different view. Bringing in so many Santa Barbara actors in ill-defined roles was the biggest mistake.

After reading through the history of the show, I was pretty angry myself when I realized where Bill Bauer ultimately ended up. That sort of story is simply inherently unsympathetic, but there would have been so many small ways to take the harsh edges off and still not let Bill off the hook for abandoning Bert and Michael and Ed. Hell, I could probably come up with a story that didn't completely demolish Bill Bauer.

I'm glad to see Ed Bryce wasn't all that enthused about the story. I'm sure there were times he was reading the script and wondering, "Who IS this?"

Of course, twenty years later, Ed did almost the same thing to his almost-grown daughter. The only thing he didn't do was let Michelle and Rick think he was dead, but he did check out on them. Amazing how alike Bill and Ed were, especially given the fact that Ed seemed to not really like or respect Bill for different periods.

Wow, thanks! I've always been curious about the old-school Bauer clan and it did answer a few questions for me.

For curiosity's sake, I'd love to see more of that storyline. I've already seen the "Man of the Year" episode (was that Bill's first appearance, or had he already been on for a bit, visiting Hillary?) where Rita picked up the photograph Bill dropped, thanks to the Bauer Family DVDs. Does anyone remember how Bill and Bert left things this time around? I know Bert filed for divorce, in essence letting Bill go back to Simone, but did they get any time together to talk about any number of things?

If the rest of the story was anything like the scene where Bert first reunites with Bill from the Bauer family tribute from the 50th anniversary week (with Ed Bryce introducing the clips), I'd have to commend both Ed Bryce and Charita Bauer for rising above that horrid story and giving us at least one poignant moment.

Interesting article. Thanks for posting it Carl.

I like the list of who the people writing in wanted to see back. Everyone came back except Hope and Mike (and obviously Maureen, though she did make appearances as a ghost/vision), which makes again point out what a mistake GL made by not bringing those two characters back.

    • Brook Lynn has been working my last nerve for at least 2 weeks. I was so relieved when she blurted out her teen queen story to her grandmother who is the most wonderful person in the entire world!
    • Just caught up and these episodes were absolutely amazing! Ambyr Michelle was soooooooooo good, and I felt so bad for Eva, I actually teared up. I love that Andre was nice to her, that was my favorite Andre moment of the series thus far.

I don't need to warn you that if you like this & want to keep it download it. Now, isn't she positively amazing?!!! Well, IMO she is. This is only the first episode that I've got her in. I think there will be more.
    • All true, and all an enormous problem on this show. -- The business stories are maddening because none of it makes any sense, none of it has any connection to the real world. As you said, sitting around and discussing mergers, takeovers, and job switching is not a storyline. -- The deck chairs are constantly rearranged on the Titanic -- that's what this show is. Summer, Chelsea, Sally, and Chloe have been in design for how long? And we've never seen ANYTHING from them. Carrying around an iPad isn't enough. BOLD is terrible, but at least they show us dresses from Kohls and jewelry from Amazon. -- I know it's baked into the DNA of the show, but I will never enjoy seeing Jabot and Newman treat each other as if no other companies exist in the entire world. A new magical line of cosmetics is not going to bring down a company like Jabot. -- This is a writing problem, not a budget problem. An enormous amount of cash is not needed to write compelling business stories and show real products. This is writer LAZINESS.
    • Right? GOD FORBID Vanessa be allowed to cut her own mother-in-law down to size, when REVA REVA REVA needs a rival to sharpen her claws on. RME I mean, they could have, but Long and Curlee (like most HW) seemed to forget about characters once they left town. If they mentioned Trish five times in the ten years she was gone, I'd be surprised.  Yeah, Alex didn't really do friendship, other than Lillian. And most of the time, Henry.  And somehow, by the time she leaves, Sonni is some friend of Mo's? Mo is just everyone's default "friend". SMH.
    • I really have no problem with Kai as a character or with the actor. The problem is putting together two very nice people -- Kai and Trina. Neither of them has a bad side, neither of them has a devil on the shoulder, neither of them is impulsive. I think that's a problem in a soap relationship. Yeah, I agree. All this freaking out might make sense if Lulu wanted to do a tabloid expose on BLQ's LOVE CHILD. We have no indication that's the case.
    • So Sonni would have somebody to talk to who she wasn't conspiring with (Will or Alan)? Alex kept telling Sonni how important her friends were...when she had virtually no friends. Instead they created loyal servants like Jane and Vera to give Alex people to play off of. They did that with Iris on AW, but Vivien was mostly there for comic relief Alex keeping Marah's paternity a secret was absurd. But I still love the scene between Alex and Alan where he convinces her by reminding her how they protected each other from their abusive father. Chris and Bev ATE that scene. Unfortunately, that took place only a few months before he exited the show...always thought they could have built on that, explored more how being Brandon's children screwed them both up. Maybe even used it as an explanation for the way their relationship could constantly swing from hatred to love. Instead of it being merely dictated by the plot.
    • The first one is Cass Winthrop dressed as Krystle Lake on Another World (not from his original creation of the character to hide from the loan shark Tony the Tuna, but at a romance convention trying to find out what had happened to Felicia who was missing). The second one is also Another World, Jake McKinnon as Doris although I don't recall what his purpose was.
